The Grenadier pub, Belgravia- London It was originally built in 1720, as an officer’s mess. Opened to the public in 1818- as the Guardsman. Later renamed the Grenadier in honour of the grenadier guards who fought at Waterloo in 1815 during the Napoleonic wars. In the past it was visited frequently by the Duke of Wellington and king George IV. Clientele of the modern age include Madonna/ and Prince William. The pub is reputedly haunted by a young British soldier called Cedric, who apparently cheated his mates at a game of cards and was beaten to death as a result. The occurrence of this grizzly murder is unknown but it was believed to have happened sometime in the month of September (actual date and year unknown). The Grenadier c.1720 The Grenadier is a public house in Wilton Row Belgravia. Originally built in 1720 as the officers’ mess for the senior infantry regiment of the British army, the 1st Regiment of Foot Guards, and located in a courtyard of their barracks. Legend has it that Grenadier is named after young Cedric, a soldier who was caught cheating at cards and punished by being beaten to death. No one knows exactly when this ghastly deed occurred, but it is thought to have been in September as that is when ghostly happenings are rife. Visitors hang money from the ceiling in an attempt to pay his debt, but poor Cedric seems to remain trapped on earth. It opened to the public as “The Guardsmen“ in 1818 but soon after the Battle of Waterloo changed to “The Grenadier”. Since then it was frequently visited by the Duke of Wellington ~ who lived at Apsley House ~ King George IV, and more recently Madonna and Prince William. THE GRENADIER PUB GHOST HUNT 22nd April 11pm-3am www.twilightghosthunts.com As well as this pub being famous for the ghost of Cedric the soldier, it’s know also, for being the former Grenadier guards officers mess, before opening in 1818 as The Guardsman to the general public. It was frequented by the Duke of wellington constantly. So much so, legend has it that he had a secret tunnel which led from his home Apsley house at Hyde park, which led to the basement of the Grenadier pub, now sealed and covered by wine bottles in the cellar. Continuing the Wellington connection, directly outside in the old Barrack Yard, at the side of the pub is what is reputed to be the remaining stone of the Duke’s mounting block, whilst an archway down the nearby alley forms part of his stables. We have encountered some incredible things at The Grenadier pub in the 9 years we have been investigating it & sometimes it has been truly terrifying. The basement has previously had a blessing & cleansing done by the local priest as staff where at one point too scared to go downstairs alone. A crucifix was placed in the wall & mysteriously would show up in different places in the basement or on the floor. This was a surprising find in the back streets of Belgravia close to Hyde Park. Down a dead end in an almost village like road I’m not sure we’d have chanced upon this pub if I hadn’t read about it but The Grenadier was a really nice find. This three hundred year old pub is painted red, white and blue with the inn sign depicting a soldier in a bearskin hat. There is a bright red sentry box just to one side of the entrance, the day we were there this was very popular with the children in the pub providing lots of fun photos. The Grenadier Guards were founded in 1656 as a bodyguard for King Charles ll and were stationed at a barracks on this site until 1818. That same year the officers’ mess was converted into the pub you see now. It is rumoured that the Duke of Wellington drank here with his officers, his London residence being nearby. There is also supposedly a ghost on site, that of a subaltern who was caught cheating at cards and whose comrades beat him so savagely that he died on the cobblestones in front of the pub. Not much else is know about the incident but it is thought it happened in September as this is the month when an icy chill is reported to haunt the building. Footsteps and groans can be heard and a mysterious figure moves silently through the rooms. The Grenadier pub, built in 1720 as an officer’s mess for the former barracks in which it stands, and a favourite haunt of the Duke of Wellington. Although it’s reputed to be one of the most haunted pubs in London, by Cedric, a young soldier beaten to death by his fellows for cheating at cards. Han hadde jukset i et kortspill.
