Labyrinth is a dream come true for someone who's been immersing himself in relaxing indie folk for the last year and a half while still passionately (desperately?) seeking God in their proverbial cave of Adullam. David Baloche's voice calmly singing scripture against the backdrop of serenely lush instrumentation is what total spiritual trust and surrender to the Almighty sounds like to me. The gospel according to Harry Styles says "Do whatever makes you happiest." This goes against everything in the scripture. When our pursuit is our happiness alone, it is not founded in love. It is not lasting. It will cause issues in the long run (Jer 17:9) and it is ultimately idolatry of self. Proverbs 14:12 "There is a way which seems right to a man and appears straight before him, but its end is the way of death."
The gospel according to Harry Styles is one of Ignorance. He says "Be a lover. Give love. Choose love. Love everyone always." This statement isn't a bad idea in itself, but it lacks the understanding of what it actually take to be a great lover of people because it lacks the context of the One who IS love. We cannot love others in the way God has loved us without knowing and experiencing His love first hand by making Him Lord, reading and meditating on His Word, and asking Him to search us and work in us (sanctification). 1 JOHN 7:4-14" Beloved, let us [unselfishly] love and seek the best for one another, for love is from God; and everyone who loves [others] is born of God and knows God [through personal experience]. 8 The one who does not love has not become acquainted with God [does not and never did know Him], for God is love. This verse comes up a lot around this time of year: “He was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed.” Isaiah 53:5 . Let’s think about this for a moment. Jesus, the only human ever to exist who could keep 100% of God’s law 100% of the time, allowed himself to be pierced, crushed, chastised, and wounded, to the point of death. He was beaten, mocked, disrespected, robbed of every last scrap of human dignity, and subjected to an execution He didn’t deserve. . And why did Jesus choose to do this? Romans 5:6-8 hasthe answer. “For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. For one will scarcely die for a righteous person—though perhaps for a good person one would dare even to die— but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” . “Smithereens” talks about defending someone who can’t defend themselves, or that the singer wants to spare the trouble of defending themselves. The Spirit works in unique ways... . Without Jesus, life can seem hopeless. Even as a believer, I've experienced it: the moments when it all feels like too much. Like I have too many thoughts and feelings and hopes and doubts all rolling around inside my head, and no idea what to do with them. Like my heart is a mass of tangled threads without a prayer of becoming neatly untangled. . And then. In comes the Holy Spirit, whispering in my ear through a song or a verse or just out of the blue, encouraging me with a truth about the Lord.
