Sergeant Andrew Snow, received a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) in Ramadi which led to headaches, flashbacks, nightmares and medications from the VA resulting in rear detachment and medical discharge. This sudden ending of his career increased his anger and depression, eventually resulting in two suicide by cop attempts. After six years of anguish for his family, The 22 Project became a spring board of recovery for Andy. The HBOT sessions gave Andrew a relief from his debilitating headaches. More importantly, Andrew remained an integral part of the 22 Project support meetings until 2020 when he passed away from heart failure caused by medication he took for the constant stomach issues that plagued him since his two tours in Iraq. While The 22 Project continued to aide his mental and spiritual recovery; his purpose became helping other veterans, and he became an integral part of the fellowship meetings held for the veterans attending treatment. He was always inviting others, desiring to bring healing to everyone he knew. The 22 Project holds a biweekly Fellowship meeting, now called Camp Snow in Andy’s honor, to assure that veterans meet each other and know of all the community based activities available to them during their stay. We have a front-row seat to miracles every day at The 22 Project! Take a look at this SPECT scan, revealing remarkable progress for one of our veterans. The top line illustrates severe damage to his frontal and temporal lobes, depicted by the black and blue areas. Damage of this kind can lead to mood instability, anxiety, headaches, poor impulse control, difficulty with judgement and forethought, and difficulty empathizing with others. However, after 40 HBOT treatments, his frontal and temporal lobes have dramatically improved. This improvement can be seen in the middle line by the absence of black and decrease of blue areas. The third line further solidifies his healing, highlighting those areas of increased oxygen flow in the brain. It's moments like these that drive our dedication to serving those who've served us. Meet Norman - a 22 Project alumni who served 40 years in the U.S. Navy, with 8 years as a Navy SEAL and 30 years in Naval Special Operations. Throughout his service, Norman faced extreme challenges, including enduring three BUD/S training Hell Weeks, a high speed parachute malfunction, and high speed special warfare combat crafts. The toll on his body and mind was immense, with countless head injuries equivalent to over 600 years in the NFL. Despite these challenges, Norman continued to serve with honor. However, his loved ones noticed a concerning decline in his mental and physical health over time. Norman shared that traditional treatments offered little relief until he found hope through The 22 Project. Through brain SPECT scans and HBOT, Norman started down a path of healing. The results have been significant, with improvements in his daily functions and clear evidence of brain enhancement. Norman shares, “HBOT saved my life and also positively changed it from the real healing of my injured brain. We're excited to share an inspiring story from the heart of The 22 Project community. Meet Josh, an Active Duty Marine who, despite facing mobility challenges after a traumatic brain injury (TBI), refused to let anything hold him back. A few years ago, Josh found himself in a wheelchair following his TBI. Seeking treatment, he turned to The 22 Project after a recommendation from his neurologist at Camp Lejeune. The 22 Project team organized 60 hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) sessions for Josh. However, transportation posed a significant hurdle. Undeterred, our team of veteran alumni and volunteers stepped up, coordinating over 150 trips to ensure Josh could attend his treatments. During his time with us, Josh was presented with an incredible opportunity. Thanks to 22 Project alumni, Jason Oakley, Josh had the opportunity to pursue his scuba diving certification via scholarship through Aquanauts Adaptive Aquatics. With determination and support, Josh completed all requirements, including a pool session, beach dive and boat dive. Josh's story is a testament to resilience and community. Through The 22 Project, he not only received medical treatment but also discovered a new passion for scuba diving. Our veterans undergo these scans before and after 40 Hyperbaric Treatments, allowing us to witness the incredible impact on brain function. The initial scan often brings validation as it confirms that the challenges our veterans face have a cause. But it's the post-treatment scan that becomes a beacon of hope! Over our 10 years, 90% of veterans have experienced significant increases in oxygen flow indicating improvement in their cognitive functioning, sleep, pain, anxiety, depression, and more. For the past year, I’ve had the honor of serving as the Program Director for @the_22_project - a non-profit dedicated to helping veterans by providing Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy as a treatment for Traumatic Brain Injuries. Although I haven’t served, I was amazed by how deeply I connected with the hardships our veterans face. I’ve heard both men and women open up about their challenges with invisible wounds and the persistent symptoms that follow. Having faced my own health battles, I understand that feeling of hopelessness all too well. Due to multiple rounds of chemo, radiation, and anesthesia - I’ve suffered for several years with physical symptoms that have crippled me. Over the last year, however, I’ve dealt with persistant and debilitating panic attacks, brain fog, neuropathy and dangerously low blood pressure - all that seemed to be getting worse and worse. Last Christmas, my veteran friends, @iconichealthhyperbaric and The 22 Project surprised me with the most incredible gift. They joined together and raised funds to provide me with 40 sessions of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy. And let me tell you, the impact has been... WOW. Since completing the treatments in January, I haven’t experienced a single panic attack. My mental clarity has improved (I even wrote a grant in one sitting!), my neuropathy has eased, and my mobility and endurance are improving every day (I ran for 10 minutes without passing out!) While these may seem like small wins, they are HUGE to me. To everyone who contributed to making this possible, I can’t express my gratitude enough. Your generosity has given me something I was afraid of losing: hope. Hope for a future where thriving isn’t just a dream, but a reality. "As the world is looking to be entering WW3 let me share some good news. Being a combat veteran isn’t something easy to live with, there’s survivors guilt, ptsd, physical injuries. As many of you know I served in both the Marines and Army with combat tours. I was subjected to explosions, gun fire, dead bodies (war is ugly) these events left me scared mentally and physically although the wounds couldnt be seen. At least not without a SPECT scan. I was introduced to a nonprofit called The 22 Project. These people changed my life I mean CHANGED MY LIFE. They did what our government promised to do. I spent the entire month of October in beautiful south Florida. They paid for the scans, they paid for my travel, they paid for my lodging, they paid for my treatment - 40 hyperbaric oxygen chamber dives to be exact. They treated me for my ptsd and traumatic brain injuries. They treated me like family. They all but cured my headaches that I used to get almost daily. Bad headaches for almost 20 years. The kind of headaches you don’t leave your house, the kind the sun hurts you, the kind you throw up and shake it off bc you have to work to provide. I’m very pleased to report I haven’t had a headache since October 18th 2023. My mood is so much more stable. I no longer have the anger outburst I’m not ill for no reason. I used to tell people I’d give anything to be the person I was before the military. I’m pretty close to the fairly likable kid that joined the Corps at 18. Just a lot wiser and a lot more grateful." Almost 10 years ago, The 22 Project began after our founders heard the staggering statistic that 22 veterans per day die by suicide. Ever since, we have been dedicated to helping veterans by providing access to physical, social, and spiritual healing. Last month, 22 Project volunteer, Alan Mednick, led our Program Director, Ashley, and volunteer, Lulu, in the Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST). ASIST is a valuable program that equips individuals with the skills and knowledge to provide effective intervention and support for those at risk of suicide. Leslie shares how HBOT works, and the importance of these treatments for our veterans. “Sunday, I said goodbye to my family, to travel to Delray Beach, Florida for a month and receive Hyperbaric Chamber Oxygen Therapy (HBOT). Today, I completed my 1st, twice a day, treatment. For those that may not be familiar with Hyperbaric Chamber Oxygen Therapy (HBOT),it is a medical treatment which enhances the body's natural healing process by inhalation of 100% oxygen in a total body chamber, where atmospheric pressure is increased and controlled. Under normal circumstances, oxygen is transported throughout the body only by red blood cells. With HBOT, oxygen is dissolved into all of the body's fluids, the plasma, the central nervous system fluids, the lymph, and the bone and can be carried to areas where circulation is diminished or blocked. @the_22_project is a nonprofit using HBOT to help Veterans with TBI and/or PTSD and its side effects ie. insomnia, memory, depression and much more. I can't thank 22 Project enough for affording me this opportunity. But, I also know, I definitely couldn't be doing this without the support of my family. A month away from my kids, is definitely not easy, but thankful technology still let's me see their beautiful faces! Meet 22 Project Alumni, Charlie Hayes, a USMC Infantry Veteran (2005-2012). Charlie shares, "During my 26 months of combat deployment, I sustained multiple blast exposures. This resulted in a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). At the time, I was told there was very little available to assist me with the memory issues, headaches, and speech issues. I was placed on different medications including some designed for early onset Alzheimer’s. None of this treatment was successful. I accepted the inevitable and continued my life struggling for memory and being heavily medicated for migraines. This continued for many years and began, coupled with PTSD, to lead me into despair and mental instability. At the depth of my despair, with dangerous plans for ending my own life, I reached out to some fellow veterans for help. Two of these friends told me that the 22 Project that had assisted them when they were dealing with similar issues. I reached out and after a short application process was accepted. After a week of HBOT treatments, I noticed differences in my sleep, mood, and memory. The people around me also noticed changes in my mood and overall demeaner. This is the testament of many veterans who were able to participate in this program. The 22 Project not only heals the brain, but also provides rest for the spirit. Upon completing their HBOT program, each veteran receives a 22 Project Challenge Coin. The tradition of a challenge coin began in the military, where they were originally used to prove membership or identity within a unit. Over time, challenge coins have evolved to represent camaraderie, achievement, and a sense of belonging among members of a group. Here at The 22 Project, our challenge coin means your are forever a part of our family ❤️ 🤍 💙 22 Project alumni, Steven, shares, "Since my deployment, I dealt with a multitude of chronic health issues that were attributed to having an unknown etiology including but not limited to chronic migraines, chronic pain, chronic fatigue, and sleep disturbance. I had a brain SPECT through the 22 Project, the review showed that I had mTBIs and without knowing my medical history the reviewer basically had a statistical likelihood for much of my problem list. It was hugely validating to learn that it was in my head, but just not my imagination. I never was a coin chaser while in the Army, but receiving the 22 Project coin at the end hit me in the feels and brought back nostalgia in a way that I wasn't expecting. The 22 Project with the scans, treatments, community, and fellowship changed my life. I sleep better than I have in 20 years, I'm able to be more present with my family and do more with them and be more involved with my community. Thank you for all that you did for me and the other veterans." 'Healing the Invisible wounds of war' is their slogan. Being someone who has been all over the Middle East, I have seen war absolutely ruin men that I have referred to as my brothers. I lost a friend this past year to suicide, so I am extremely passionate about this cause. I was very fortunate to have been born wen I was because by the time I was 18, most of our involvement in Iraq/Afghanistan was over. But a lot of those guys were my Corporal's and Sergeant's and some of them were really messed up in the head, and quite a few of them have committed suicide.
