Been recovering & reflecting on the 5 Boro Bike Tour & what it means to Remember Why You Started. 🚴🚴♀️🚴♂️ Bike riding is something I’ve always enjoyed, ever since I was little kid. One of my earliest preschool age memories involves a red tricycle I was obsessed with, until it unfortunately got stolen. Eventually I graduated to a huffy radio bike during my adolescence, that I ran into the ground till the wheels damn near fell off. But then most of my teenage years & my 20s were spent with my feet planted firmly on the ground lol no bike in sight. I honestly let the pressures of adulthood get in the way & thinking I was too cool for school as they say haha. 😎😜🥰 Fast forward to my mid thirties, I fell back in love with bike riding, when I moved walking distance to Central Park. Initially it was because I was afraid to get on on the train during the Quarantine, then it quickly became one of my favorite leisurely activities. There’s a quote that says “the creative adult is a child who has survived” & to me bike riding truly encapsulates this sentiment. I legit feel like a kid again. Like there’s nothing that could possibly stop me. For a moment I’m free & nothing else matters. We did a thing last Sunday. The Five Boro Bike Tour in NYC was incredible - and my fellow riders made it even better. A few notes: 1. The weather - 50’s and rainy - not what we expected but we persevered. 2. For us it was a Four Boro Tour - we peeled off in Brooklyn before crossing over to Staten Island. 3. Riding on closed off roads, streets, parks and bridges with epic views was unbelievable. 4. For 46 years, the TD Bank Five Boro Bike Tour has taken over NYC the first Sunday of May for its annual bike tour. 40 miles, all five boros, 5 bridges… this year was perhaps one of the most challenging due to the weather. Whatever Mother Nature had she threw at us… cold, wind, rain… and yet we still had loads of fun. This was my fifth time completing the ride. It’s still something I would look forward to doing again even though we were drenched to the point that water squeezed through my toes with each pedal and that getting off Staten Island after the finish line is always the true test of endurance. 🤪 If you’re interested, @bikenewyork is responsible for organizing everything. Registration opens in the winter, but the ride takes place the first Sunday in May. This year saw 34,000 riders. We again chose the Courtyard Marriott in Chelsea to stay overnight. It’s in the heart of midtown close to everything from MSG to the High Line and Hudson Yards. I’m always recruiting more people to join our team. For most, yesterday's weather was the perfect excuse to stay home. Not so for a Bakers Dozen of Trilatinos and the Trilatino Juniors who volunteered as part of @bikenewyork annual Five Boro Bike Tour. Say Congrats to 6 who not only served as course marshals along the route through Harlem and over the Madison Avenue Bridge. After the last of 32,000 riders passed, the half dozen Trilatino Adults, Juniors, and Fathers pedaled all the way to the Finish Line in Staten Island. Tip your hat to the remaining 7 TriLatinos who along side the riding TLer's, were out in these streets supporting participants by alerting them to specific road conditions, assisting with crowd control and road emergencies, encouraging slow riders, and providing information to participants, spectators, and nearby residents. The #tdfbbt is only as great as the experience the riders have. As those approached and rode through the Bronx, the enthusiasm and friendly treatment TriLatino gave them made it a 5 star moment. All of our volunteers deserved medals for how they stepped up yesterday. What a day what a day. I still can't believe I made it to the finish line! The roughest part for me was from the BQE to the Verranzzano. The rain coming down at this point didn't help. I walked up three of the five bridges but loved those declines! I was able to ride up parts of the Verrazzano, which was a lovely suprise. Everyone riding was so supportive and friendly. I'd do it again. TD 5 Boro Bike Tour yesterday 5/5/2024! 40 miles through all 5 boroughs of NYC with no cars and full exhaustion on my body. Everything aches. 🤣 It all took much longer than I anticipated. I did this probably 15+ years ago with my Dad, who pushed me through (he was a serious biker back then)... I needed that yesterday. Am I even a biker? Nope. 😆 I was supposed to do it with my heart, my babygirl and other half of me, so I was missing her and it was not as much fun. Though, met great people and got soaked and cold, but I did it.
