Peru has a long history of wave riding. Ancient cultures, such as the Moche and the Chimu, used reed watercraft called "caballitos de totora" for fishing and for wave riding over 3,000 years ago. The origins of SUP surfing can be traced back to various cultures throughout history. One notable instance occurred in 1778 when famous and unfortunate Captain James Cook witnessed Hawaiians' who were surfing with a paddle, using boards known as "He'e nalu" made from specially carved Koa trees. The village headman would receive the largest board, while others would receive smaller ones. However, there is a debate regarding the first surfers in the world. Some argue that ancient Peruvian fishermen were the true pioneers like over 2.000 years ago. Those fishermen rided the waves of the Pacific Ocean on the boats called Caballito de Totora, constructed from tightly tied reed. Standing up on their boats those skilled fishermen used the waves to propel themselves back to land. As the Polynesians lack written records from that era, the Peruvians present a compelling case as the world's first paddleboarders. Fourth, the International Surfing Museum in Huntington Beach has a great exhibition about the upcoming Olympics this summer - specifically about how surfing will make it’s second appearance as an Olympic sport after debuting in Japan in 2020. Surfing in the Olympics was the dream of Olympian Duke Kahanamoku in the 1930s, and now its come to pass. A keel fin foiled by Alan Smith @tangent_dreams Created and made from Derakane glass back in 79' it apparently fitted into fin boxes made by Paul Joske @valla_surfboards and were screwed in from the deck (I've never seen the box). What I find quite interesting is how similar it is to the FCS 1 system that came onto the market many years later. Normally at this time of the year I’d have been on the beach at Bells shooting the Rip Curl Pro but extending our trip to Nazaré had me watching the webcast instead. During the webcast the commentary team threw out one of those random facts after Cole Houshmand took out the win. “It had been 32 years since a Californian surfer had won Bells”. I was there shooting that day in 1992 when the final was decided in a dramatic and unforgettable way when Richie Collins, despite suffering a broken back, clinched victory against former World Champion Martin Potter. Richie had led from the first exchange of the 40 minute final which was being surfed along the Rincon rock shelf in the shadows of the Bells cliffs. The tide was rising and the small inconsistent swell was dropping. Richie took a wave and pulled in as it barreled down the line close to the rocks. The wave shut down and he was smashed into one of the big rock outcrops so hard that he broke his back. He staggered out of the water and was immediately attended by the first aid crew. The heat didn’t stop but the waves did. As Richie was stretchered into an ambulance the last 10 minutes of the final ticked away. Pottz, needing a wave to secure victory, just sat there in an empty lineup. Fate had intervened as the ocean stayed quiet, denying Pottz the opportunity to capitalise on Richie’s misfortune. While Richie was rushed to the Geelong hospital Pottz was the solitary finalist on the stage where he received the runner up Bells Bell from Doug ‘Claw’ Warbrick. The victory was bittersweet, overshadowed by the severity of Richies’ injury, but it highlighted the unpredictable nature of competitive surfing. This board belonged to one of my surfing idols, Conrad Canha, and it’s going to be an honor to bring it back to its former glory. In the late 90’s there was still a mix of generations fighting out the CT events. Occy was in his ‘comeback’ stage when in 1998 he took out the Rip Curl Pro for the first time with a win over Shane Dorian and got to ring his first Bells Bell. Occy had a massive crowd following, as he still does, including a few fans that took it to extremes. Each year when the Bells event came round a group of diehard fans from Warrnambool, a seaside country town miles down the Great Ocean Road on the west coast of Victoria made the trek to Bells Beach to watch Occy surf. In a time when it was still legal to drink on the beach, they’d set up with their well stocked Esky’s (coolers) with the local favourite VB beer and celebrate Occy’s every move. The more beer they drank the more raucous they became with antics like ‘nudie’ runs along the beach and running into the freezing water with beach chairs or Esky’s. They certainly kept the crowd entertained who in true ‘aussie style’ egged them on as did the beach commentators from the cliff above. Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach 2009 In 2008 the ASP Board approved an Alternate running format for WCT’s which gave contest organisers the opportunity of applying a shorter contest format if swell predictions were not favourable. The format eliminated the Round 2 repechage heats by replacing the 3 man Round 1 heats with 16 man on man heats made up of the back 32 rated surfers with the winners advancing to Round 2 and coming up against the Top 16 surfers. The 2009 Rip Curl Pro was the first event after the ASP Board’s decision to take up this option. Parko hit Bells Beach brimming with self-confidence, on a high after winning the first event of the year, the Quiksilver Pro on the Gold Coast and with the Alternate Format didn’t have to surf in Round 1. He fired up in Round 2 and didn’t take the foot off the peddle for the rest of the contest powering his way to victory and racking up back to back wins and putting the rest of the Top 48 on notice. The win in 2009 was his second Bells Bell after his victory in 2004. I was there on the beach in Hossegor when Kelly won his very first CT event in 1992. He’d already had podium (top 3) finishes in three of his first five events of that year before winning his first professional tour event, the Rip Curl Pro, in France. His win in that year’s Pipeline Masters in Hawaii secured his very first World Title, and at the time, age 20 he became the youngest surfing world champion ever. It wasn’t easy backing up the following year where he finished sixth in the 1993 rankings but came back to win 5 World Titles in a row from 1994–1998. In 1994 the Rip Curl Pro at Bells Beach was the first of six CT victories that year and really signified the charging of an era in pro surfing. With Kelly defeating Pottz in the final the new guard had arrived. For Women’s History Month, from our display: Dukes dream came true, surfings road to the Olympics. Isabel Letham Isabel was born in Sydney in May 1899, the year before Australia became a country and two years before women gained the right to vote, Isabels mother was an active member of the earliest feminist movement and cited as a major influence on Isabels path. Isabel grew up near Freshwater beach where public swimming was surging in popularity due to a ban on public swimming being lifted a few years earlier and became a skilled swimmer and diver by her early teens. At Fifteen her life was changed by Duke Kahanamoku, who had been invited to Australia by the NSW Swimming Association was asked to give a surfing demonstration Duke built himself a board and gave a Hawaiian-style surf shooting” demonstration at Freshwater Beach. Stand up Surfing was almost unheard of, at the time Australians were riding wood bodyboards or bodysurfing. Near the end of the demonstration Duke invited Letham from the crowd for a tandem surfing demonstration. As Isabel told the story, told the story, when they paddled into the wave, she screamed at Duke to stop because it felt like going off a cliff., Duke dropped in anyway, and pulled her to her feet. At this point Isabel said she was “hooked for life”. The tandem ride was witnessed by hundreds at the beach and all over the newspapers the next day, making her a local hero. At 16 she left school and moved to California where she impressed the locals with her surfing skills and became a well known swimming coach for University of California, Berkeley, gained her US citizenship in 1925 having determined that “opportunities in the States were high for women,” In 1961, Isabel retired as a swim coach, and dedicated herself to advocating for women’s inclusion in surfing “There’s no reason why girls should not be as good on surfboards as the boys. I’m all for them,”. And inspired generations of female surfers including Pam Burridge. She was present 1980 to watch Pam win the first Australian women’s surfing championship in 1980. Isabel passes away in 1995 at the age of 95 her ashes were scattered at Freshwater and Manly beach.
