Unforgettable Morning with Gentle Giants at Chiang Mai's Elephant Rescue Park! ☀️ Just spent the most incredible morning at the Elephant Rescue Park in Chiang Mai!😁 This sanctuary provides a loving forever home for rescued elephants, and it was heartwarming to see them up close and in person.🥰 Our half-day tour included: • Learning about the elephants' stories and the importance of ethical elephant sanctuaries. • Feeding them. (they loved the bananas!). • Having a nice walk with elephants, in which we follow the elephants as they are doing their own thing. • Enjoying their playful baths. The highlight? Observing their gentle behavior and feeling their incredible connection with their mahouts (caretakers). 🦧 While travelling to live with the Mentawai tribe, I learned about Indonesia being inhabited by the critically endangered orangutan. These unique primates are found only on 2 islands in the world: Sumatra and Borneo, both in Indonesia. A few Google searches later, I had a phone number and a dream. I sent a WhatsApp message and got an answer from a random person offering to take me alone on a private 4 day tour, and for less than half the cost of the tour companies I’d found online. So, l booked a flight to the remote Borneo island rainforest and sent an e-transfer with hopes it was legit and someone would actually pick me up from the airport and take me to see these elusive creatures before they disappear forever. I am so glad I trusted my gut and flew to the jungle in complete faith that I was speaking to an honest person. They arranged a full private boat for me with 4 staff (Captain, skipper, chef, and guide) to take me deep into the rainforest up the Sekonyer River. We spent our days cruising the river and trekking the jungle and encountered over 20 wild orangutang in their last refuge on earth. In addition, we encountered numerous proboscis monkeys (also endemic to Borneo), macaque, gibbon, salt water crocodiles, pit vipers, tarantulas, and so much more! It was the trip of a lifetime!!! If solo travel has taught me anything, it’s that I don’t need to wait around for people to do these adventures with. I made great friends with the boat staff and got all the extra perks of befriending the locals and was truly spoiled rotten by the whole team.
