Congratulations to artist April Angeles @aprilangelesart, whose work titled ‘Icarus’ (Mixed Media, 16x20), was voted as People’s Choice Winner in our FORM REDUX show. 🎉 The final full day to see works in the exhibit is Friday, May 10. We hope you visit us at the Spruce Grove Art Gallery to experience 46 transformed art pieces as part of this exhibit which called on artists to transform, reimagine, remix, or upcycle. This is what April shared at the FORM REDUX Reception earlier this month: “I started painting during the COVID19 pandemic. Right before that my sister had left for Vancouver, she’s the artist. She left a bunch of paints at home, I didn’t want it to go to waste and asked if I could use it instead which she very generously agreed to. While I was painting I was working with different mediums at the time I didn’t really have a feel for who I was as an artist just yet but overtime I came to realize I really liked working with textures, I like seeing those extra layers on a canvas, it draws me in personally. In my house we love to cook, so I just found there was a lot of trash generated from produce nets, a lot of plastics. I remember as a child reading about how birds would get caught in these nets and perish because they couldn’t get out. On my part I wanted to reduce plastic that would end up in landfills. Every painting that I do has a piece of myself in it. This is something very personal to me. Each of my paintings consist of those nets. I really like to use less waste when I do my creations. And when I do make them they are always inspired by many things. Icarus flew too close to the sun, so to me I can see a wing that’s slowly being disintegrated and burned by the sun. My works don’t stop within the canvas. We're re-sharing this cool infographic for Mental Health week! How does trauma affect the body's stress response? When the body is in a state of resiliency, it easily adapts to stress and normalizes to a state of homeostasis following stressful events. The nervous system can cycle between arousal, activating the sympathetic system to deal with minor stressors, and restoration, allowing the parasympathetic system to handle its rest & digest functions and heal the body. In un-discharged traumatic stress, the body can get stuck in sympathetic activation, or parasympathetic freeze. This idea is based on the polyvagal theory, introduced in 1994 by Stephen Porges. The polyvagal theory posits that our nervous system has 3 neural circuits. The newest part of our nervous system is the ventral vagus complex, which describes a state in which we can connect to other people and engage socially, and feel empathy and joy. It is in charge of social engagement and relaxation, and when we are operating from our ventral vagal system we feel safe and secure. In response to real or perceived danger, the body activates the second oldest circuit, the sympathetic nervous system, to mobilize resources. Blood shifts to the brain and muscles to prepare for fighting or fleeing, and other bodily functions like digestion and reproduction are put on pause. The dorsal vagal freeze response is thought to be the oldest, most primitive response of our nervous system. Our bodies access this response when we cannot escape from danger. People operating in the dorsal vagal freeze response become immobilized, and may feel an intense need to sleep or lie down when faced with high-stress moments.
