The 20-24 April and 25-29 April 2024 Great White Shark Expedition with Shark Biology Course have just ended. Sadly we didn't see any great white shark. For unknown reasons they've been absent from the area for the past couple of months. Both groups of guests were fabulous and the crew of Rodney Fox Shark Expeditions was fantastic as usual, therefore even without great whites this back-to-back couple of cruises at the Neptune Islands was still an awesome experience. I'm glad guests enjoyed my 90 minute daily lectures on shark biology on board the MV Rodney Fox. Next year's Great White Shark Expedition with Shark Biology Course in Australia will take place from 16 to 22 September 2025. It's going to be a 6 day / 6 night trips. September is a very reliable month for the presence of great white sharks, and I'm confident that we'll be able to see them. Details will be announced very soon. In some cases these animals are killed specifically to sell their teeth and jaws to collectors, as these anatomical parts fetch very high prices on the market. By purchasing these items you contribute to the decline of the populations of these animals, exactly as happens with elephant tusks or rhino horns. The only ones who need shark teeth are sharks. A great alternative are resin replicas and fossil teeth. 🦈 Bruto, lo squalo “buono (Disegno ad acquerello) Come ho già accennato, mi ricorda lo squalo del cartone animato “alla ricerca di nemo”. Non tanto perché è uno squalo bianco, ma perché non l’ho fatto abbastanza “cattivo” 😂 e nel cartone Bruto è altri suoi amici volevano diventare buoni e smettere di mangiare pesce (alquanto impossibile in natura ovviamente ma è un passaggio simpatico del film). Tornando alla realtà, è un animale fondamentale per il nostro ecosistema, però diciamo che spero di non incontrarne mai uno durante una nuotata 😬 gli squali non sono così pericolosi come si vuol far credere, gli attacchi all’uomo sono pochissimi, però queste sono “bestioline” di notevoli dimensioni 😬 Mi piacerebbe invece incontrare uno squalo balena 😍 e magari anche uno squalo zebra! Magari più avanti disegno anche loro, sono molto particolari e artistici! Interessante notare come in culture più antiche e sciamaniche gli squali fossero visti come guide spirituali in grado di trasmetterci forza, coraggio e determinazione, era visto come un animale da rispettare e non come una minaccia. Nuove scoperte sul Megalodonte, lo squalo preistorico che si è estinto 3,6 milioni di anni fa. Una nuova ricerca ha sfatato la sua mitica stazza, finora ritenuta simile a quella dello squalo bianco: la sua corporatura sarebbe stata gigantesca ma non tozza. The October 2023 European tour of great white sharks lectures was a great opportunity to meet some good friends. Per la prima volta al mondo è stato filmato un cucciolo di squalo bianco appena nato 🦈 Carlos Gauna e Phillip Sternes potrebbero aver risolto uno degli enigmi più grandi della biologia marina: la localizzazione di una delle nursery degli squali bianchi. La loro scoperta rivoluzionaria, pubblicata su Environmental Biology of Fishes, consiste nel primo avvistamento al mondo di un cucciolo di squalo bianco, a soli 300 metri dalla spiaggia californiana. Le immagini, registrate con un drone lo scorso luglio, mostrano un cucciolo di circa un metro e mezzo, appena nato. Sternes sottolinea l’importanza di questo evento, poiché potrebbe confermare il luogo di nascita degli squali bianchi, un aspetto della biologia di questa specie che ha eluso gli studiosi per molto tempo. La vicinanza del cucciolo alla riva sfida le attuali teorie, che suggeriscono che gli squali bianchi nascano più al largo. Sternes ritiene che la scoperta potrebbe indicare che questi predatori marini nascano in acque poco profonde, aprendo nuove prospettive nella ricerca sulla loro riproduzione. In two weeks the 8-15 February 2024 Great White Shark Expedition with Shark Biology Course starts, and you can still join us. Cage diving in South Africa is very easy. Everyone can cage dive, no scuba qualification is needed. The dives are in a aluminum cage which accommodates several guests at a time. The cage is fixed to the boat and remains at the surface. Our guests enter the cage and wait for the shark to approach while keeping their heads above the water. When the shark is close enough to be seen underwater, the crew warns the people in the cage to immerse themselves completely and observe the shark passing by. We don't use cylinders, we just hold our breath. It's a very easy activity, which anyone without diving experience can do. You don't even need to know how to swim! This photo was taken at one of my lectures at the Museo di Scienze Naturali dell'Alto Adige, in Bolzano / Bozen, Italy in December 2018. Over the past 25 years I have given over 200 lectures on sharks at universities, museums, diving associations, yacht clubs and other organizations in 18 Countries, including Italy, France, Monaco, Austria, Czech Republic, Germany, Hungary, Spain, Switzerland, Netherlands, Denmark, Norway, South Africa, Maldives, United Arab Emirates, Argentina, Mexico and South Australia. The venues included many prestigious scientific institutions such as the universities of Milan, Naples, Leiden and Budapest, the Oceanographic Museum of Monaco, the Oceanographic Institute of Paris, the Natural History Museums of Vienna, Prague, Madrid, Cape Town, Milan, Bolzano and Trento.
