Happy #internationalwomensday 2024! 60 years ago in 1964, many people across the world were first introduced to ska music when Millie Small’s hit rendition of “My Boy Lollipop” (originally by Barbie Gaye) stormed pop music charts, making Millie a pioneering figure in bringing Jamaican music to a global audience. So popular was this young woman’s hit song that it inspired a slew of other “ska” or “blue beat” records from non-Jamaican artists that same year, more or less following that simplified radio-ready pop-ska template. It even inspired this cover version by Connie Dee on Hit Records, and although this Nashville label mainly put out cover versions of current popular songs as a cash grab, the quality of Dee’s rendition here is pretty solid. Although ska didn’t quite manage to become the next enduring dance craze in the US (imagine competing for air time with Motown and The British Invasion in 1964), it’s fascinating to look back and see just how close ska came to becoming a permanent staple in popular music. Happy birthday to Charley Organaire! While he is primarily known as Jamaica’s top session harmonica player from the 1960s, Charley is also a fabulous vocalist and dynamic showman. Since emigrating to Chicago in the mid-70s, he has led his own Sunshine Festival Band, bringing the authentic sound of the Caribbean to the Midwest US. Charley and his band were even featured in the film, “Love Jones”, performing his song, “Never Stop Loving You”. In 2014, my band was fortunate enough to record a session with Charley, resulting in three 45s released on his own Organaire’s label, via @jumpuprecords This is the first release from the series, and features new recordings of two of his original ska vocal tunes, “Troubles” and “Elusive Baby”.
