To any new followers firstly thanks for following! In April this year I was diagnosed with a sacral chordoma which is a very rare form of cancer which only affects 1 in 800’000 people each year. I am currently off work and awaiting a operation which will remove the tumour whole along with part of my spine (S3 and below) this will potentially leave me with other complications in my life that may need further operations to treat. I will be in hospital for 6 weeks after the operation to basically get my life back together and learn how to walk again, see if I will be fully bladder and bowel incontinent amongst other things including a pelvic spinal fixation using carbon to recreate the missing parts of my spine. I set up this gofundme to help with the costs associated with any house adaptations that may be required once I’m home from the hospital. I will be hospitalised 3 hours away from my family for almost 2 months and the costs that will come with this due to distance and me being out of work are great. We buzzed, bleached, and dyed pink hearts on my head. Since it’s going to be falling out for the 5th time again in the past 5 1/2 years, I might as well! 🤪 I just finished my first round of chemo for this now 4th reoccurrence of my cancer. I got scans and we found out that I have 5 new, fast-growing tumors. I’ve been having a lot of pain in the left side of my chest, abdomen, and back. It’s crazy that all of these tumors are on the left side of my body (4 in my left lung and 1 extra large one in my left abdomen). I’ve also been dealing with a painful cough and shortness of breath. Not fun. I’m going to start radiation soon for 2 of my 5 tumors (for now). I will continue chemo indefinitely. It’s really hard to look too far into the future. But, I’m continuing to make plans in the hopes that I can keep doing fun things around my treatment. I’m praying that this treatment works, and gets me back to having manageable pain, so I can get back to doing life! I don’t have time for cancer! #EwingsSarcoma is a type of #cancer that begins as a growth of cells in the bones and the soft tissue around the bones. Ewing's #sarcoma mostly happens in children and young adults, although it can happen at any age. Ewing's sarcoma most often begins in the leg bones and the pelvis, but it can happen in any bone. Less often, it starts in the soft tissues of the chest, abdomen, arms, or other locations. ~ Ewing's sarcoma vs. osteosarcoma #Osteosarcoma is another type of #BoneCancer that mainly affects young people. It is more common than Ewing's sarcoma. Osteosarcoma usually grows in bones around the knee, and Ewing's sarcoma usually grows in the bones of the thighs, pelvis, ribs, and upper arms. These two types of bone cancer are treated similarly. ~ What are the symptoms of Ewing's sarcoma? Ewing's sarcoma symptoms can resemble common bumps, lumps, and bruises on people’s arms, legs, and chest. Parents and caregivers may mistake Ewing's sarcoma symptoms for kids’ sports injuries. The difference is Ewing's sarcoma symptoms go away but then come back, or they get worse. Common symptoms include: • Bone pain that comes and goes and seems to get worse at night. • Swelling in the tissue around bones. Ivy gets hard on herself because she isn’t as fast or runs out of steam quickly. I have to remind her that not only is she only able to swim with one arm, but that her body has been working so hard on fighting, that I don’t care if she only lasts 15 minutes during practice, or if she gets last place, I’m just grateful she is able to do what she loves. Her first race on Saturday was free style and she said that her legs were so weak that she almost fell when she got out of the pool. She went on to swim 3 more events after that. If you know Kara, you know Piglet is her best friend. Well, Dr. Kara said Piglet broke her leg tonight doing a daring spin jump (which is what her brother did when he broke his foot last month). She did a scan and gave her a cast. Piglet is expected to heal. I love watching Kara use pretend play to cope with what's going on. She has had Piglet get CT Scans, xrays, radiation, tattoo marks for radiation, shots, oral meds, and even a port. This stuffie is loved beyond measure. As #NationalMentalHealthWeek draws to a close, we thought it timely to share this again. In a world full of filters & photoshopped images & with so many children and adults suffering from anxiety & mental health issues relating to appearance and low self esteem, Liberty showed such confidence & a fierce determination not to let cancer define or break her. She perfectly illustrated that real beauty truly comes from within…& she had it in spades! Such a beautiful, funny, loving & unique soul inside & out. Both Liberty’s legs were heavily scarred during surgery to remove her left tibia, replaced by the fibula from her right leg & involving skin grafts & skin flaps. She lost her stunning long hair after the very first round of chemo, her brows & beloved lashes followed soon after. A once sporty child who loved to dance & never sat still now had to walk with crutches, unable to weight bare on her left leg, & later use a wheelchair. She also had to navigate having a Hickman Line, which with teenage clothes was all too often visible. But Liberty never hid them or herself away. She wore her scars and differences with great pride, & rightly so! I have no doubts that Libs would’ve been an amazing advocate for children with cancer, who understandably are especially susceptible to mental health issues both during and post treatment. But also an inspiration & help to anyone lacking in confidence, having an off day or week. She had that uncanny ability to say just the right thing to make you smile or laugh, even on the darkest of days. She was a force of nature who could teach us all so much, always finding the positives, no matter how small….and the tragic reality is that she had so much more to give, if only the treatments she so desperately needed existed. Words can’t adequately express how missed Liberty is. So today, please take a moment to remember her too, and in doing so, channel your inner Liberty. Embrace your differences and insecurities & be comfortable with your perfect imperfection, that is the true essence of beauty. "Bone cancer can affect any bone in the body, it is most commonly seen in the pelvis, the long bones of the arms and legs, and other long bones in the body. Bone Cancer Symptoms and Signs • Aches and pains in the joints and muscles • An increase in swelling and discomfort in the region surrounding the infection • A bone deterioration process that leads to fracture • Fatigue • Unexpected weight loss Possible Bone Cancer Treatment A variety of factors, including the kind of bone cancer, the size of the tumour, and whether or not cancer has spread to other parts of the body, determine the type and duration of these therapies. The following are the Bone Cancer Treatment most frequently used: • Surgery: your surgeon will remove the tumour and some healthy tissue from the surrounding area.It is also possible to repair or replace damaged bones using natural or synthetic bone grafts. A second procedure may be required if the first procedure does not entirely eradicate all cancer cells. • Radiation therapy: is a cancer treatment that shrinks tumours by exposing them to extremely high doses of X-rays. Nothing has robbed loving grandmother Maureen of her optimistic outlook and faith. Even after years of dealing with bowel tumours and melanomas on the skin, she has continued to volunteer in her community and support people in need. What is Sarcoma? Sarcomas are a group of rare cancers that arise from the connective tissues of the body, such as bone, muscle, fat, cartilage and nerves. They are often very aggressive and require prompt care. They are difficult to treat and to diagnose & it requires a Multidisciplinary, Complex Cancer Care Team at a recognised centre to manage these tumours. Sarcoma is sometimes called the 'Forgotten Cancer' because of its rarity and as such research into even the basics of this cancer type are difficult to perform. The result is that research 'breakthroughs' are uncommon & developments in care can be slow. Researchers and Doctors who are interested in improving our understanding of Sarcoma & Bone Cancer are often underfunded in their project goals. A couple of weeks ago, the wound on my back became infected, making a wider part of my lower back go red. (I think it might have been sore, too, only most of it is still numb from the surgery!) The first 3 photos are from the height of the problem. The plastic surgeons at the Royal Orthopaedics Hospital (NHS) in Birmingham, where I had my surgery, had recommended co-amoxiclav in this situation. When I asked at the local GP’s the Nurse Practitioner was a little hesitant to give them to me, calling them the ‘Domestos’ of antibiotics, telling me that they clear out lots of good bacteria, as well as the bad. Oh, and it’s likely to give me stomach ache and runs! After the 7-day course of the co-amoxiclav, the area was looking much better, but not quite fixed. Whilst getting another 7-day prescription sorted, I reached out to the hospital by phone, (as I wanted to make sure I was doing the right thing with more tablets), and they asked me to send over some photos to send onto the plastics team. Instead, my surgeon, Mr Evans, actually called me back within an hour, which I was most surprised at; he checked over my photos, asked lots more questions, and reassured me that all is looking really good, especially in terms of the wound on my back. Right now, the infection has completely gone, and the wound is looking a whole lot better, as in the last photo.
