#salkantay #salkantaytrek #salkantaytrekking #perutrekking #perutravel #peruadventure #perudestinations #senderismo #senderismoperu #machupicchuperu #machupicchutravel #viajosola #nomadadigital #salkantaypass

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ (7/10) Lucmabamba to Aguas Calientes *Lucmabamba* Full of dense vegetation and sun, the town is located in the Santa Teresa Cusco district in the province of La Convencion in the department of Cusco. It is a 6 hr drive from Cuzco through high mountain ports. At ~2000m above sea level, it is an ideal location to harvest and produce exquisitely aromatic and flavorful coffee. We ate breakfast and said goodbye to our chef and assistant chef. We then took a van ride out to Hidroelectrica and bypassed the llactapata ruins. The ruins were discovered and explored very little in 1912. A 2003 expedition suggested that the area was an important rest stop and roadside shrine on the journey to Machu Picchu. Llaqtapata may have been part of a network of interrelated administrative and ceremonial sites which supported the regional center at Machu Picchu. It probably played an important astronomical function during the ‘Solstices’ and ‘Equinoxes’. Trekked 11 km from Hidroelectrica to Aguas Calientes alongside railway tracks. The trek was mostly flat with one set of staircases near the beginning. There was some upward trekking from the town entrance to our hotel for the night. However, the shoe condition and altitude sickness had been completely optimized and made it that much easier to speed demon it from start to finish. 🤡 Finished the day with massages, warm showers, and a group dinner at Inka Wasi. Been back in the states for a little over a week now! Elise and I were bummed to have both come down with bronchitis at the tail end of our trip, but we’re so grateful to have completed the most important part. We finished our 5 day trek on the Salkantay Trail at Machu Picchu, and we lucked out with the most perfect weather. It was hard to believe we were actually there after all these years of having this on our bucket list. We knew dad was right there with us, and we spread a few of his ashes from the Machu Picchu Mountain trail. I’ll try and share some more photos soon, but for now, we’ll daydream about the day that we can return. ❤️ #machupicchu #machupicchuperu #peru #cusco #cuscoperu #bucketlist #sistertrip #ketsol #ketsolco #salkantay #salkantaytrekking #andesmountains #andes #visitperu #pachamama

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ (6/10) Collpapampa town is located in Apurímac Peru ~ 273 mi (or 439 km) East of Lima. The best time to travel to this area is between April to November. The weather is a pleasant mild climate with little precipitation. The average maximum temperature in the town is 17 ° C in September and 15 ° C in January. We were blessed with nice sunny weather. We continued our southward trek into the cloud forest region. We made some brief stops to purchase fresh juices/fruits and took bathroom breaks. We crossed small streams and had a relatively easy hike downwards towards a small coffee plantation in Playa Sahuayaco. After roasting our own coffee, we took a 10min van ride to our next campsite: Lucmabamba/the Jungle Domes. These glamping tents were different from the previous tents since they were fully covered and completely dark inside. We had lunch and then took a 45 min van ride out to Cocalmayo’s thermal baths where the other trekkers were already enjoying themselves. We took a quick pit stop on the way to baths to get a new pair of shoes for myself. I needed new shoes since I lost both my soles/soul between the 2 hiking days from Salkantay pass to Collpapampa and from Collpapampa downwards to Lucmabamba (~16 mi). Enjoyed ourselves for a couple hours at the baths then headed back to the Jungle domes for dinner and bed. As altitude sickness improved/began to resolve, I finally made it from dead last of the pack to the front of the pack. The past 3 months’ workouts dedicated to the trip were not wasted! It’s all about the journey they say! It’s another early pick-up from our hotel. At this point it feels natural and I’m still excited from visiting Machu Picchu. We said good-bye to Wilo and thanked him for keeping us safe on the Salkantay Trail, and showing us how beautiful Peru is. Our new guide, Henry, picked us up at 4am for a 3 hr drive to Rainbow Mountain. I already miss our group - but it’s time for a new adventure. Per usual we stopped for breakfast before climbing Rainbow Mtn and indulged in some yummy Coca Tea (I can’t get enough of it). Our ride up was beautiful and scenic. Once again we opted for a horse ride to the base of Rainbow Mountain, we would have to climb by foot the steepest section to the summit. And yes, I fell off the horse AGAIN but this time getting on 🤣. Horses are just not my thing but I was grateful it was even an option. Altitude hiking is very taxing on the body but so rewarding. It’s one step in front of the other, pressure breathing, and believing you can. We did it!! We’re standing at 16,530 feet above sea level! Words cannot express the feeling of being able to see this natural phenomenon. A mountain covered in different colors caused by different minerals. I’m here, we’re here! A trip of a lifetime - an adventure I’ll alway cherish, and embrace the bonds we’ve made with Peru and each other. Peru, I’ve left a piece of my heart with you.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ (5A/10) Soraypampa through Salkantay Pass After the trek from Soraypampa’s Sky Camp to Humantay Lagoon the previous day, 6/8 decided to ride horses through the toughest part of the 5 day hike. 2/8 hiked to the top of the Salkantay Pass (4,630 m/15,190 ft) with the trekking guide. It was nice to be able to sit back and take in the scenery while riding up. At the top, our group learned a little bit about Inca religion as we snacked on chicken sandwiches and rested. We then took some pictures and descended towards our lunch spot inching our way out of the Highlands into the Cloud forest region. *Salkantay Pass* This trail/pass’s history dates back to the Incan Empire’s reliance on a network of roads built to connect its vast territories to each other. The Salkantay Route was used as a crucial communication route between the imperial city of Cusco and the Machu Picchu citadel. Religious leaders took advantage of this pass’s high elevation to reach Machu Picchu since it brought them “closer to god.” #Salkantaytrekking #Peru #Travel #AbraSalkantay #SalkantayPass #Horseback #Hiking

#salkantay #machupicchu #salkantaytrekking

Day 4 of 5: The original planned hike was too dangerous due to heavy rains so we took a bus about an hour from camped then hiked to Aguas Calientes. (Roughly 8 miles) It was fun and rather easy going as we hiked along mostly rail road tracks. We stopped at a local friend of Juanito’s and enjoyed fresh coffee and freshly picked banana. (The best banana I’ve ever had!) we stayed at a hotel for the night (the shower felt sooo amazing) and bright up and early the next day for Machu Picchu!!! • • • • #lizzydhere #girlstrip #salkantaytrekking #machupicchu #hikingperu #hikingsalkantay #teamcocapicchu

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ (4C/10) Soraypampa and Humantay Lake *Soraypampa* 3850 m/12631 ft above sea level It is the start of the trek to Machu Picchu. 6 families live in this area of the Mollepata district with a total of 36 inhabitants. There is no school or health center nearby. The area has no electricity but does have basic infrastructure: recycled water flow and sanitary services - toilet and shower - due to flow service. It also has access to a septic pit constructed in 2012 by the municipality of the district of Mollepata. It used to be an area of agriculture. However, this activity was moved to the outskirts/ “free zones” of Soraypampa to make room for tourism. Despite having ideal geographical and climatic to breed llamas/alpacas, these Andean camelidaes are not bred here. Sheep and cattle are bred for consumption and horses are bred for transportation. The best part of this “Sky camp” was the ability to lie in bed after the day’s hike and look up into the clear starry night sky and to appreciate the milky way and some shooting stars. *Humantay Lake* Located in the Andes at 4,200 meters (13,779 feet) above sea level, the lake gets its stunning blue-green hue from the surrounding mountains’ glacial runoff water. This water is rich in minerals and sediments. It is considered sacred by the local Quechua people. Local communities visit it often to practice rituals and provide offerings. It is believed to be home to the highly revered Andean mountain deity Apu Humantay. It is believed that this mythological deity controls the region’s weather and is responsible for providing water for the crops and livestock there. #Soraypampa #Humantay #Peru #SalkantayTrekking #MachuPicchu #Travel #Hiking

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ (4B/10) I made my way back to a stream that I had crossed earlier when I ran into our guide who threw his hands in the air and exclaimed “Where have you been?!” At this point, I was exhausted from the day’s walk at an altitude of ~ 12,795 ft. I followed the guide in the correct direction to where my angry/frustrated family was waiting for me for the past 45 min. While they scolded me, all I could think of was how grateful I was to have found familiarity and not be forgotten. Hindsight, my mind was definitely not working correctly, and I was mentally and physically exhausted. Trudged my way to lunch with some difficulty. Had little appetite and didn’t eat much. Immediate post lunch activity was to hike up to Humantay Lake. This was to see how timing might be for the next day’s difficult hike through Salkantay Pass. I found going upwards to be very challenging. Felt tired and quickly became short of breath with little effort and needed multiple stops to reach our group’s previous stopping points. I was the last one to reach the lake and dropped down exhausted from the exertion. The group took photos and admired the lake before heading back down. Some even climbed the mtn across the lagoon. Going down was a little easier but still required plenty of effort. Was still one of the last ones down and made it back to camp in the dark just in time for yet another unsuccessful emergency walk and dinner. #HumantayLake #Peru #Hiking #SalkantayTrekking #AltitudeSickness

5/13/2024, 4:38:51 AM

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ (4A/10) Cuzco to Challacancha (12,467’) via van starting at 330AM. Provided with warm blankets upon van pick up and told that we should get some rest before getting dropped off to our Challacancha starting point. Upon arrival, we took pictures and briefly enjoyed the scenery before starting our trek towards Soraypampa. The trek was moderately challenging brief rest stops during which we were taught about Incan culture/empire and about the surrounding nature. The walk was doable until I dearly needed to do a successful emergency walk and make use of an Inca toilet. At this point the path continued downwards. I beelined an upward path behind some bushes in front of a medium sized aqueduct with actively flowing water and squatted. By the time I finished and returned towards the downward path that split into R and L, I wasn’t sure which way the group went. I took the R path. I walked for a good bit looking to see if I could ID anything. Unsuccessfully attempted conversation with a lady down the pathway about my whereabouts in Spanish, so I kept going. I stopped and turned around and saw 2 young men coming in my direction. They spoke only Spanish. With some broken Spanish, I discovered that I had reached the 1st/last establishment on the path in the direction that I was headed. This didn’t seem right, so I thanked the men and began backtracking. Started to get a little panicky and thought that I had been forgotten and that no one had waited for me. Kept backtracking and found a young man with a Salkantay tshirt on and asked him how far away the Salkantay trekking group was. He said “arriba” and 20 min away. Hindsight, this young man was our group’s main chef for the next few days during the trek. #Peru #SalkantayTrekking #Hiking #Outdoors #Nature #Family #Cousins #Siblings #Salkantaytrek

The weather was pretty sporadic during our time hiking Ausangate, but the trek was one to remember. The ability for the pieces from Jack Wolfskin to perform during these conditions kept us from freezing our asses off. The journey was so worth it. ------------------------------------------------- #perou #pérou #peru #perutravel #peru🇵🇪 #peruadventure #igersperu #perutrip #visitperu #travelperu #roadtripenfamille #voyageenfamille #travelwithkids #familleautourdumonde #overlandfamily #nomadfamily #overlandlife #overlanderfamily #southamerica #ameriquedusud #salkantay #salkantaytrek #salkantaytrekking #salkantaytrail #machupicchu #perumountains #machupicchuperu #machupicchupueblo #incarail #machupicchutrain

Day 3 of 5: we hiked from camp Collpapampa (9,678 ft elevation) 6.60 miles to the Jungle Domes (6,562 ft elevation) Along the way we passed through a land slide, or should I say mud slide.. 😆 several waterfalls and stopped by a passion fruit farm, cocoa farm and a coffee farm. The trail was rather flat/down hill as we hiked along the winding road through the mountains. (The views were absolutely breath taking) we ended the day at the natural hot spring about an hour car ride from camp. (Which was absolutely perfect considering the long hike from the day before) *highly recommend doing this!* especially if you have an amazing group like we did! 😜 we might of had too much fun. A big part of the Salkantay trek is the accommodation along the trek. This was our first time glamping and it sure raised the bar high for any future ones we’ll do 🏕️ Fyi.. TO SALKANTAY PASS It was just us and our guía Felix, some in our group had taken horses, some had stayed behind entirely. We're just sweating and chatting, about the coolest critters Felix had ever seen on his many days on the trail, the native plants. Salkantay came out of that fog to say hello. And I'll never forget the excitement, knowing I'm finally on my way to say Hola back! This is one of my favorite shots. This is just for me. #salkantay #salkantaytrekking #perú #perunature

On the other hand, the Salkantay route is usually less traveled, allowing you to enjoy a quieter experience and connect more with nature. 🦙 POTENTIALLY LOWER COSTS: The Salkantay route tends to be less expensive than the Inca Trail. This can make it a more affordable option for those on a tighter budget or who prefer to invest less in their trekking experience. 🦙 POSSIBILITY TO COMBINE OR ADD MORE ACTIVITIES: Since the Salkantay route offers more flexibility in terms of dates and logistics, you can make the most of your time in the region and create an itinerary that suits your interests and preferences. 🦙 GREATER AVAILABILITY OF DATES: Due to the permit limitations of the Inca Trail, it can be challenging to secure a specific date for your trip, especially if you're planning last minute or during the high season. The Salkantay route offers more date availability, allowing you to schedule your trip with greater flexibility and convenience. 🦙[email protected] 🦙Web: alpacaexpeditions.com 🦙 Link tour: https://tiny.one/SalkantayMachupicchu 🦙 Book now: https://tiny.one/bookwithae #incatrail #humantay #hobbithouse #humantaylake #incatrailtrek #salkantay #salkantaytrekking #salkantaytrek #machupicchu #incatrailtomachupicchu #machupicchuperu #crystalclearwater #discoverperu #bestvacations #beautifuldestinations #landscape #morethanatrek #cusco #peru #trekking #fyp

I’m actually standing on a Natural Wonder of the World - Machu Picchu! Located in the Andes Mountains, more than 7000 feet above sea level and secured land to the Inca. Hiking to the ancient stronghold of Machu Picchu sits at the top of many travelers’ wish lists. The sacred citadel was “discovered” (as much as an outsider can discover a local historic site) in 1911 by an Indiana Jones-type Yale professor named Hiram Bingham. He was led to the ancient city, which was built around the 1450s, by a local boy and was understandably stunned by the beauty and grandeur of the abandoned site. Bingham shared the existence of Machu Picchu to the modern world in the April 1913 issue of National Geographic and since then the spectacular archaeological site has attracted visitors, researchers, and explorers from around the world determined to unravel the mystery of the site — or simply to bask in its ancient splendor. There are many theories of what Machu Picchu may have been or used for. My mind was blown just imagining all the history and mystery I was standing on. Work hard, and make your dreams happen. Find your Machu Picchu and hold on to it until it’s a reality. What are your dreams? ------------------------------------------------- #perou #pérou #peru #perutravel #peru🇵🇪 #peruadventure #igersperu #perutrip #visitperu #travelperu #roadtripenfamille #voyageenfamille #travelwithkids #familleautourdumonde #overlandfamily #nomadfamily #overlandlife #overlanderfamily #southamerica #ameriquedusud #salkantay #salkantaytrek #salkantaytrekking #salkantaytrail #machupicchu #perumountains #machupicchuperu #machupicchupueblo #incarail #machupicchutrain

------------------------------------------------- #perou #pérou #peru #perutravel #peru🇵🇪 #peruadventure #igersperu #perutrip #visitperu #travelperu #discoverperu #roadtripenfamille #voyageenfamille #travelwithkids #familleautourdumonde #overlandfamily #nomadfamily #overlandlife #overlanderfamily #southamerica #ameriquedusud #salkantay #salkantaytrek #salkantaytrekking #salkantaytrail #coffeeplantation #Sahuayaco
