These are ‘Seaton’s je’dore’ heirloom mums from @whisperingflowerfarm that are fully 5” across and are incredible beauties that seem to glow with their golden petal tips and light yellow centers. A truly special variety. The ‘cafe au lait’ of heirloom mums. Btw, there are many spellings of this variety out there so I went to the source—the National Chrysanthemum Society. If they don’t know, who does? But however it’s spelled they are delectable. We are all planning to do more mums next year and @coolhollowflowers hopes to have a dedicated mum tunnel for next fall. Earlier this week I took a little time to attend a workshop at @pleasanthillsfarmmd owned by my friend Amy. The talented Rachel Johnson of @floralandbloom demonstrated bouquet arranging and here is my creation. I’m a tentative designer at best, and loved putting this together with her guidance. Thanks Rachel and Amy for the inspiring and fun evening. I went with my farming partner Yeon of @whisperingflowerfarm and we had a rare time away from our own work to enjoy another space and the creativity that a group brings. (Some of the flowers even came from my farm 🥰🌻) The community of flower farmers I’m a part of has brought a lot of joy to my life. Woohoo! This week’s delivery from Rock & River Flower Collective 💕🌸 Some farmers have already had frostmas (that’s what we call our killing frost day—it’s a bit of a celebration for some, especially if it’s a nice late date, like this year). It ends our daily hustle, but most of us are very busy clearing fields to get seeds in the ground for next spring’s flowers and getting our precious ranunculus and anemones planted. It’s also perennial planting time! The peonies have arrived. 💐 Over the winter we will plan the crop rotation for next year, get a few more seeds, make lookbooks for our customers and work on making ordering and logistics in ge real smoother in an effort to improve during our second season. We are thrilled with how the first year as a collective has gone and look forward to next year. Yesterday I cut some stems of ‘Attar of Roses’ in the hoophouse and for the rest of the day the scent of rose filled the hoop. It was heady and made working in the heat just a little more pleasant. I miss roses which were so easy in the Mediterranean climate where I first learned to grow, but this is a sweet replacement. This year we’ve dedicated a substantial area in one hoophouse to rose scented geraniums in many amazing forms. Filigreed, variegated, interesting tomato-leaved, and of course, the wonderful ‘Attar of Roses’. We’ll have these available now through the fall in all these amazing forms. My favorites are the large leaf with the strong variegation called ‘Dappled Oak’ and the incredible lacy filigreed green leaf. Both are very dramatic. I was fortunate to find a supplier of these unusual hard-to-find very special plants through my ASCFG mentor. This spring has been a roller coaster ride weather-wise. Hot, cold, dry. But inside our hoop house the delphinium has been slowing achieving heights we could never have imagined. When harvesting I enlist my son Will to help carry them to the cooler—some cuts are as tall as me. A couple of stems touched the crossbeams at about 10’. When I began to grow flowers for the cut flower market one of my hopes was to be able to grow delphinium. They’ve always been a favorite flower and I’d been able to grow them quite easily in my previous Mediterranean-climate garden and I missed them. We found success last year with plugs planted out in late winter and were very happy with the production of those plants. This year our outside plantings were dug up by pesky animals, so we’ll have to try again next year. But these are truly perennialized plants which are now four years old. They’ve really put on a show. These beauties have made their way into a number of weddings and events this spring. White Tweedia has bloomed—I’m finally growing it. We were able to get the seed from Japan (quite a process) and will have it for designers later this summer. The first little sprig bloomed so we have proof-of-concept. Now we just need to wait for some nice long stems to develop.🤞There’s also a double form—cannot wait to see it. ‘Nimbus’ sweet peas with storm clouds behind (clouds that brought no rain ☹️). These flowers have the closest to black in them that I’ve seen. And the fragrance…. We aren’t selling them as single cuts, but most of our sweet pea foliage stems are ‘Nimbus’. I find sweet peas last a lot longer when cut with foliage and you can enjoy the pretty form of the plant with tendrils. Buds will develop and open if they are in clean water with “floral food”. The seeds were planted last September, the plants went in the ground in October and they spent the whole winter growing in our hoophouse. They’ve been gorgeous this year and their deep roots helped them survive the April heatwave.
