As reported by the Wall Street Journal, popular streaming service Spotify is exploring new capabilities akin to TikTok, enabling users to remix songs by their favorite musicians. The report states that preliminary conversations on the tool are under progress and that licencing arrangements require finalization. Additionally, Spotify could limit the tool's use to subscribers of its recently launched "Music Pro" premium plan. Meanwhile, it has also been revealed by a TechCrunch article that app researcher Chris Messina is involved in the development of new capabilities for Spotify that would let users to remix their favorite songs straight from the streaming service. The TechCrunch article, which uses pictures of the Spotify app's code, speculates that the streaming service may be developing a number of features, such as a "playlist tuner" and an option that would allow users to "flex their DJ skills with different transition styles to create the ultimate mix". Using a different tool, users may filter songs based on genre, activity, mood, and other factors to determine the "tempo range" and "vibe" for their mix. Moreover, the coding implies that users would be able to make mixes for certain situations, such as making an accelerated version of a song for house parties or workouts. In the following track, the mixing tool might also be used to quickly bend in order to "keep the energy going." With features like "choose how to order your mix, or select auto order to have Spotify sequence it for you," and "automatically reorders your mix by sequencing tracks with a similar key, tempo, and style together," Spotify may also be aiming the tool at users who haven't tried mixing songs before. Since 2006 I have been spending time in image-archives, gathering materials for my own collage works & arts ed workshops. I used to spend hours riffling through the 1.4 million images at the Toronto Reference Library, photocopying pictures of comic books, war monuments, famous artworks, etc. for my materials. Slowly this process shifted towards searching online to source stock images, but I noticed things were missing. Where I once found Monets and portraits of dead presidents among community punk rock concert posters and Take Back the Night rally flyers, I was now finding 7 digitized version of Sir John A. McDonald and no indie zines but for the ones in the care of the Toronto zine library group of volunteers. This started affecting the meaning of messages being produced by learners in my workshops and frustrated my own process. So grateful to have received support from the @ontarioartscouncil Chalmers Arts Fellowship and finally have the time to dedicate to following these curiosities and concerns. I’ll be traveling to SanFrancisco, Oakland, Mountainview, Vienna, Paris, Lyon, Cambridge, Philadelphia, NYC, Sault Saint Marie, Toronto, Los Angeles and San Diego to visit galleries, libraries, archives and museums. I’ll be looking at the digitization priorities and preservation practices of big institutions & platforms stewarding our cultural commons and visiting collections held by communities and individuals whose stories these archives represent. Which images and artifacts are being digitized first, and which are being further marginalized from the visual record of the human experience? How does this all affect the future of the cultural commons and data-sets informing AI that is increasingly mediating our access to digital assets as media makers and remixers? With a focus on visiting exhibits using media tech to engage the public by bringing physical + digital archives together to create immersive experiences.
