NEMZETI ÜNNEP: Today, Hungarians celebrate perhaps the most important of their three national holidays (or nemzeti ünnep), The Day of the Revolution and War for Freedom in 1848, or az 1848-as forradalom és szabadságharc ünnepe. The day serves as a memorial to the revolution of 1848, which paved the way for Hungarian autonomy within the Austro-Hungarian Empire. On March 15 1848, poet and revolutionary Sándor Petőfi took to the steps of the Hungarian National Museum in Budapest and read aloud to a crowd his patriotic poem Nemzeti dal, which translates as ‘National Song.’ By the end of the recitation, Hungarians were rallying behind the call for revolution and moving to liberate political prisoners. Though the independence granted by the revolution was short lived, only from 1848-49, it guaranteed Hungarian autonomy within the new Austro-Hungarian Empire. Today and every March 15, workers, students, and other citizens enjoy a day out of work to celebrate and remember the value of freedom. At the National Museum, crowds gather in Hungarian national colors – green, red, and white – to hear Nemzeti dal recited, as it was by Petőfi in 1848. At Remix ⟷ Culture, we’re reminded of our friends and partner artists Kálmán Balogh and Alexandra Berta, with whom we had the pleasure of recording in Budapest back in 2017. With their virtuosic playing on the cimbalom and zither respectively, Kálmán and Alexandra exhibited for us the beauty of their traditional music, the breadth of Hungarian culture (Kálmán is of Hungarian Gypsy roots), and the richness of Hungary’s folk culture. #TBT 🤘🏼Shortly after VHS or Beta finished touring with Ladytron for the Diamonds and Death record we decided to try remixing our friends via this project called Pixelated. Vhs did some awesome remixes over the years (Juan Maclean and Tegan and Sarah etc). This was the era where “bands remixing bands” was like a cool new thing. Yes, what the kids now call “indie sleaze” 😎 But this time we wanted to keep it anonymous as we’d been touring the world as VHS or Beta for well over a decade and felt the need for something fresh. It feels like time traveling because we started THIS over a decade ago, and had multiple things do pretty well on blogs, and got into some pretty amazing playlists and DJ sets around the world (SoundCloud link in bio still has them sitting there all these years later). Our remix of @poolside “Slow Down” got about 1/2M views on YouTube before we even had a social media presence! Then, as these things tend to happen, life gets in the way and we lived in different cities for a couple years. Other projects and opportunities presented themselves. And then the pandemic hit. REMIX ⟷ DANCE: One of the many ways to engage with our releases of artists from around the world, alongside listening, remixing, and supporting, is through dance! Last year, we had the great pleasure of collaborating with Nawal Assougdam (@nawal.assou), who utilized tracks from our releases with Amazigh artists Symphonie Lahcen Idhamou, Ferqa Ahwach Agdz, and Khadija El Warzazia, in her performance “Atay?” Check out some clips from the performance above and read on below what it meant for Nawal to use these tracks and engage with her roots. “There is a strong sense of community in all of these pieces of music that I wanted to transport into my choreography. Growing up in the states, I engaged with my Moroccan culture through food, clothing, music, dance, and, of course tea. This piece was a love letter to Atay, Moroccan tea, as a symbol of hospitality, community, and culture. “Being of Amazigh Souss origins, when I first stumbled upon this music, I felt an immediate connection. The melodic calls in Ferqa deeply resonated. I was inspired by the rich array of rhythms in the Symphonie Lahcen. Khadija El Warzazia’s music brought me back to childhood memories in Morocco, being in a room of only women, making music with their hands, feet, or on the tables, dancing till early hours of the morning. “I am so grateful that I stumbled across Remix ⟷ Culture. AMAZIGH NEW YEAR: Two weeks ago today, Amazighs, or Imazighen, an indigenous people of Northern Africa, celebrated Idh Yennayer, the start of the new year on the Amazigh calendar. We are wishing our Amazigh brothers and sisters an aseggas ammeggaz (written above in Tifinagh, the Amazigh script) and a blessed and peaceful 2974! Yennayer, from yen meaning ‘one’ and ayur meaning ‘month,’ marks the beginning of the winter solstice and, as days begin to lengthen and agricultural growth recommences, is a symbol of prosperity and longevity. Celebrations revolve around themes of rejuvenation, family, and harmony with nature. One beautiful ritual includes the custom of leaving crumbs outside for birds and insects so that all beings may be prosperous. Yennayer is especially dear to us as many of our friends, collaborators, and community members are themselves Imazighen. In fact, when Remix ⟷ Culture was founded back in 2012, some of our earliest collaborators were Imazighen from Morocco. TANFIS RESIDENCY (PT. 2) RECAP: As fundamental to our process and our event TOMORROW(!) 12.1.23 at, and in close collaboration with, @funoon.us, as is arranging and recording traditional music together, is the art of video and audio remix. Throughout the Tanfis residencies, while musically connecting with their roots, our cohort of incredible musicians worked in constant creative dialogue with the remix artists and DJs of the team, @elinaarbo and @omaraena. Together, through this deep, continuous collaboration, they created something that is simultaneously wholly new and inseparably tied to their ancestral ties to Palestine, Syria, Lebanon, and Iraq. Since earning his Bachelor of Arts degree in Percussion Performance from the University for the Arts in Rotterdam, Netherlands (CODARTS) in 2004, Nezih Antakli (@namunez) has established himself as an accomplished percussionist and instructor. After relocating to the United States in 2007, he became an active member of the World Music scene in the wider New York City area, with a specialization in Middle Eastern and Latin percussion. Throughout his career, Nezih has performed and taught at renowned venues such as Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, as well as in the Tony Award-winning Broadway Musical, “The Band’s Visit.” Additionally, he has been fortunate to participate in numerous festivals worldwide, reflecting his passion for percussion and his dedication to sharing it with audiences from all walks of life. TANFIS RESIDENCY (PT. 1) RECAP: As we prepare for our upcoming event on 12.1.23 in close collaboration with @funoon.us, one way in which we have been creating community, sharing the beauty and richness of our cultures, and collectively healing has been through food. At the first part of our Tanfis 2023 residency, between playing music, sharing stories, and arranging the event, we created the the time and space to cook, swap recipes, and share all of our meals together. How lucky we are that our Tanfis team turned out to made up of not just gifted musicians, but of gifted chefs as well! We enjoyed delicious plates from the Levant and Iraq, like مجدًرة (mujaddara), a rice and lentil dish with local varieties from Palestine, Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, and beyond. Sharing food is much more than just nourishing to our palettes and stomachs, but, much like music, to our souls as well. The way in which we create community through shared meals is itself an act of radical resistance, and we are especially keyed in to this in the wake of the continued displacement, culture erasure, and now the unfolding genocide of the Palestinian people. Sharing meals is a practice that unifies all of us, regardless of our culture or background. It’s an experience we all share. It is something deeply human. Omar Aena (@omaraena) is an Iraqi world music DJ, community organizer, and event producer based in NYC. TANFIS RESIDENT ARTIST: In our group of artists for Tanfis, there is an absurd amount of string-playing talent. But amongst them, one of our artists stands out for his sensational playing with a bow. Representing Palestine, Sami Abu Shumays is as sure to blow you away with his violin playing as he is with his voice. One of the leading Arab violinists in the U.S., Sami Abu Shumays ( @abushumays) is internationally known as a master of the maqam system. He is co-author of the acclaimed book Inside Arabic Music (Oxford University Press 2019), and his passion for teaching and oral tradition is also expressed through his YouTube series "Maqam Lessons," the website www.maqamlessons.com, and his contributions to www.maqamworld.com. Co-founder and director of the NYC-based Arabic music and dance ensemble Zikrayat (www.zikrayatmusic.com), Sami has also recently released his first solo album Circles, available on all streaming platforms (https://samiabushumays.hearnow.com/) A second-generation Palestinian-American, Sami originally studied Western music before traveling to the Arab World to reconnect with his roots. TANFIS RESIDENT ARTIST: We are pleased to introduce yet another outstanding Palestinian member of our Tanfis artist collective: the incomparable multi-instrumentalist Zafer Tawil. An accomplished Palestinian musician based in New York City, Zafer Tawil (@zafertawil) is a virtuoso on oud, violin, and qanoun, and is a master of Arabic percussion. He has performed with numerous musicians, ranging from the pop star Sting to avant-garde composer/performer Elliot Sharpe to masters of Arabic music such as Simon Shaheen, Chab Mami, Bassam Saba, and George Ziadeh, among many others. Zafer has composed music for a number of film soundtracks, most recently Jonathan Demme’s My Favorite American (not yet released), Rachel Getting Married, and the documentary Until When. He has held workshops on Arabic music at numerous universities throughout the United States. TANFIS RESIDENCY (PT. 1) RECAP: Two weeks ago, our collective of artists embarked on the first step of the journey that will lead to the highly anticipated premiere presentation, our 12.1.23 Tanfis live event. What manifested was little shy of magic. 11 artists met on a sunny afternoon in the verdant, wooded Kerhonkson, NY, many of whom had never met before. In short time, they created community, utilizing their personal stories, shared history, and that special tool musicians have when it comes to getting to know each other: their instruments. For 4 days and nights, these artists—from diaspora communities of Palestine, Iraq, Syria, and Lebanon—breathed through their music, extending their bodies and spirits through their instruments. They designed a shared vision for the Tanfis live event and collectively selected and created original arrangements of community-rooted songs. They shared meals, joy, laughs, and stories, and they challenged themselves with one of the guiding questions, “how do we want to represent our roots?” By the end of their stay, they walked away with stunning recordings and videos of their song arrangements, eyes towards the next chapter of Tanfis, and a new artistic family. The first of our talented artists in this category is an embroiderer committed to maintaining Palestinian culture and traditions, Lina Barkawi! Lina Barkawi (@linasthobe) is a tatreez (Palestinian embroidery) practitioner, preservationist, and educator based in Brooklyn. She fell into the art form by way of her Panamanian mother and delved head-first into creating her first homemade thobe (dress) in preparation for her Katib Kitaab (marriage ceremony) in the fall of 2022. After learning about the ancestral tradition of embedding individual stories through tatreez, she launched Lina’s Thobe, a design and thobe creation service that helps Palestinian women in the diaspora create something truly unique and beautiful that tells their story on a handmade thobe. I've been a little more than distracted this week and submitting a piece to a show on Saturday and not feeling where I would like to be at this time.
