A FooChow Pau Went to a CNY sketch event yesterday, encountered food from different Chinese culinary tradition. This is a Pau made with vinnase of the red yeast wine. Remnants of the wine are often used in Foo Chow cooking. The Pau, I like it! ( But why does it still taste mildly alcoholic? It has been cooked at least twice...). My neighbour, a FooChow was talking about fermenting his own red rice wine, and..offered me the vinnase! Since I cook and all, but I was dithering,....uhmm.. making your own wine? Is it dangerous? Will there be methanol in it? I don't want to be blinded... Next time, I shall say, " Oh yes! Please give me the remnants!" 2. Yam abacus, made from yam and tapioca flour. Hakka. Named that way probably from its resemblance to abacus. In this world of handphone calculators, I am from the generation that remembers abacus in use. My maternal grandpa, my paternal grandma, my uncles.. flicking it on their desks, counting. I never did learn. In fact, I don't even like calculators. Less mistakes?
