Guided By Voices - Static Airplane Jive CD EP // Released 11th May 1999 (Recordhead) // Reissued 7” 1997 (Recordhead) // Today’s date marks the release of the CD reissue of this EP on Luna Music’s Recordhead label. The original 7” was released on City Slang in 1993. The 7” was remastered and reissued in 1997, followed by the CD reissue in 1999 - both on Recordhead. Both the original City Slang 7” and the reissued Recordhead 7” don’t seem to have release dates other than the years they came out. This EP is often cited as a fan-favourite of GbV’s ‘90s releases - and for good reason. In a little over 10 minutes, you’ll hear six brilliant songs with melodies that will follow you around for decades (not an exaggeration). The band at this point was Bob along with Jim Pollard, Mitch Mitchell (on bass), Kevin Fennell and Tobin Sprout who also was recording engineer, as it was all recorded on his 4-track. All six songs from Static Airplane Jive are included on 2022’s compilation album Scalping The Guru (which uses the back cover design from Static Airplane Jive on its front cover). Go Back Snowball - Calling Zero // Released 26th February 2002 (Fading Captain Series) // Go Back Snowball was a one-off side project. Working in a similar way as the Airport 5 albums with Tobin Sprout, Bob wrote lyrics and recorded his vocals in Dayton, Ohio over some beautiful musical arrangements which Mac McCaughan (Superchunk) recorded in North Carolina. Mac’s backing tracks sound similar to his side project, Portastatic, which I’m a big fan of. Bob’s vocal parts fit the music so naturally that it really doesn’t sound like a postal project. Tobin Sprout - Lost Planets And Phantom Voices // Released 25th February 2003 (Luna / Recordhead) This album was Toby’s return to solo recording after his brilliant Eyesinweasel album which came out three years earlier. Toby has always been a master of perfect melancholic pop and there’s heaps of it here. The cover is a beautiful letter-press style print on heavy stock card. These limited edition sleeves are hand numbered. My copy is numbered 59 of 75. A different cover was used for the CD copies of the album, designed by Jason Pierce whose name you’ll see often getting credit on Pollard and Sprout releases for his fantastic design/layout work. The songs Catch The Sun and Martini are featured in the 2005 movie Fortunes (starring Tony Hale and Peter Dinklage among others). Let’s Welcome The Circus People // Released 23rd February 1999 (Recordhead/Wigwam) // Happy quarter century to Let’s Welcome The Circus People! This is Toby’s third solo album. Like many of his recordings, Tobin plays all the instruments (apart from three tracks here where drums are played by Jim Eno from Spoon). Some of Toby’s amazing artwork features on the sleeve, including collaborative artwork with his wife, Laura, who also co-writes one song on the album. This album is maybe a little less poppy than the first two but there’s plenty of Toby’s melodic charm on display throughout to make this album sound as great today as it did 25 years ago.
