. . Robert Pollard - Faulty Superheroes // Released 26th May 2015 (Guided By Voices Inc.) // Back in 2015, after a three month long drought of new Pollard tunes, Faulty Superheroes landed. From the release notes (via GBVDB.COM): ‘ Faulty Superheroes has a tossed-off, effortless magnificence that the rash of indie-whatevers trailing in his wake from Bee Thousand to the present constantly strive for, and fail to achieve. The constant sense of surprise, of wonder, of discovery that you routinely find in superbly-structured instant bomp classics like “Faster The Great” is not something that can be taught, or learned, or imparted, or copied. Pollard pretty much abandoned the four-track for twenty years now and still gets tagged as “lo-fi,” which is a word that makes even less sense now in the days of digital recording than it did then in the days of occasionally tape-hiss smothered coulda-shoulda- been hits. “Take Me To Yolita” in lesser hands could have been not much more than a bad one-liner stretched to fit a pop song, but Pollard reverse-engineers the titular pun to build a Kinks-like mini-epic that elevates the raw material of the song to transcendent heights. “She walks to him but that’s not him.” Damn. And so it goes. Are there bum notes here and there? Recording accidents-on-purpose left in like crushed empty beer cans strewn around the miniature, glimmering pop/ rock/psych/prog construction sites left standing in the wake of each of Faulty Superheroes’ finished/unfinished songs? You betcha. The Guided By Voices aesthetic was formed and developed and continues to be improved by Pollard, which makes all the more puzzling the handwringing that accompanies every announcement of a so-called GBV “break-up” (or for that matter, “reunion.”). “You only need one,” he sings on the song of that title. Circus Devils - Five // Released 16th May 2005 (Fading Captain Series) // Todd Tobias and Robert Pollard return with the fourth album from Circus Devils, naturally titled Five (apparently there is possibly a legendary lost album before this one, maybe named Bird Maggot). Leaning into their experimental side more than ever, this is probably the least accessible album from Circus Devils. But that’s not necessarily a bad thing. The Detroit Free Press wrote, “Multi-instrumentalist (Todd) Tobias keeps things primal-n-futuristic while (Robert) Pollard’s lyrics allude to the horrors of the human race in a way both cryptic and imaginative. The original 7” was released on City Slang in 1993. The 7” was remastered and reissued in 1997, followed by the CD reissue in 1999 - both on Recordhead. Both the original City Slang 7” and the reissued Recordhead 7” don’t seem to have release dates other than the years they came out. This EP is often cited as a fan-favourite of GbV’s ‘90s releases - and for good reason. In a little over 10 minutes, you’ll hear six brilliant songs with melodies that will follow you around for decades (not an exaggeration). Robert Pollard - Fiction Man // Released 10th May 2004 (Fading Captain Series) // This album is made up of demos that Bob had recorded (guitar and vocals into his boombox) for GbV’s Earthquake Glue album but decided not to use. Most of the lyrics and song titles are based on poems from Bob’s art magazine EAT. Todd Tobias used Bob’s acoustic guitar demos as a blueprint and built his instrumental tracks around them. By 2004 Bob and Todd already had a few Circus Devils albums under their belts, where Bob added his lyrics and melodies to tracks that Todd and his (then GbV bass-player) brother Tim had already written and recorded. But Fiction Man was the first time the process was reversed. Obviously, it was regarded as a success because Bob and Todd continued to make a lot of albums this way in the following years. Guided By Voices - Warp And Woof // Released 26th April 2019 (Guided By Voices Inc.) // This 2019 album was released between two other GbV albums in the same year, one of them (Zeppelin Over China) being a double album. This album is made up of the 24 tracks featured over four six-song 7” EPs released during the previous months. I’ve included photographs of the four EPs that the songs came from before being re-sequenced into Warp And Woof. From the release notes (via GBVDB.COM): ‘ After completing Zeppelin, Pollard felt the itch to record a few EPs. Just as GBV had done back in 1994, he would use them to channel his everflowing ideas to an outlet. But when a magical boombox writing session produced six fully formed songs in under half an hour, Pollard realized he had an album on his hands. What to do? With a band so formidable they’ve been dubbed the New Golden Age of GBV, they quickly completed much of the recording on the road. The 2018 Space Gun Tour provided impromptu recording venues. To me, it kind of looks like the solo figure below is leaving the past Guided By Voices (GbV rune) in the vault and looking towards the upper part of the artwork where they’re shaking hands with new acquaintances. Which would kind of line up with this album as it comes after the ‘classic’ line-up reunion’s brilliant run came to an end and just before the next amazing run of albums featuring the new, current classic GbV line-up, with Bob handling the writing and all instruments himself (unlike and GbV album before or since). On the other hand, I might be completely wrong and just need to get out a little more. I was a bit unsure about this album when it was initially released. TheFireNote.com said: “ Noble Insect is an addicting little hum along number that will have you chiming in “Japan, Japan, Japan friction in Japan” almost instantly. The song has a very somber and serious tone to it and it is easy to imagine Pollard just sitting on a stool and delivering this one as his foot taps slightly to the slower beat. Compared to the other singles, Noble Insect is the most subdued but full of indie swagger. The first B-side here is the classic sounding Tobin Sprout track, Waves Of Gray, which is a short and sweet number clocking in at 1:28. The track begins with a piano driven short verse and then musically expands with plenty of singing the chorus in his soft falsetto voice. It is a simple but elegant song. The second B-side is the amusing See You Soon. Bob worked on this in a similar way to other collaborations such as Airport 5 (with Tobin Sprout), Lifeguards (with Doug Gillard) and Circus Devils (with the Tobias brothers). Mars Classroom features Gary Waleik (of Boston indie rock band Big Dipper - check them out if you haven’t already) writing and playing guitar, bass and keyboards with Robert Beerman (formerly of Portland band Pell Mell) playing drums. Bob then wrote lyrics and melodies to turn the instrumental tracks into fully fleshed-out songs. Guided By Voices - Forever Since Breakfast 12” EP // Released 1986 (I Wanna) // Reissued 29th March 2005 (Fading Captain Series) // The very first Guided By Voices release was this 7-song EP which the band put out in 1986. Only 500 copies were pressed originally. Those copies trade hands for around $400 each now. Bryan Pollard (Bob’s son) wrote the folowing about where the Forever Since Breakfast title came from: “For those who don’t know, it is a Charles Manson quote. When Tom Snyder asked him when he was born he said, “I don’t know. Forever since breakfast.” My dad had just completed that album and was struggling with an album title and when he said that decided that had to be the name of the album.” You can hear an R.E.M. influence in the songs and Bob’s vocals on this relatively polished recording, but seeds of what GbV would become are scattered throughout the EP. Like I Do, for instance, sounds like it could be an outtake from Vampire On Titus. Forever Since Breakfast was reissued on CD in 2003 as part of the 5-CD (plus 1 DVD) box-set, Hardcore UFOs: Revelations, Epiphanies and Fast Food in the Western Hemisphere. The album was reissued again in 2005. This time it was a vinyl release (with a colour cover, instead of the original black and white) as part of Bob’s Fading Captain Series. It was followed by an extensive tour which took in 44 dates between April and December with each show containing a set of 88 songs. Among many glowing reviews, The FireNote.com said: ‘ The three singles dropped prior to Space Gun’s release were very promising but the sheer depth of great tracks on this 15 song juggernaut is staggering. Those first impressions mirror the LP as a whole. You got the rocking title track (which kicks things off very nicely), “See My Field” which plays out like a psychedelic outtake from Earthquake Glue complete with faux electric sitar and mellotron, and the brilliant ballad “That’s Good” where Doug Gillard’s orchestration skills are used to mesmerizing effect. Totally distinct songs but fitting perfectly into the song sequencing here. If the awesomeness were to stop there we’d be looking at a good GbV record but the fact that all of these new songs are terrific and unique gives this release a slight edge over the last two Guided By Voices albums – both of which were outstanding. ……. There have been some truly majestic Pollard records since his mid-90’s Golden Era but if you’ve struggled with GbV fatigue and stopped paying attention then this is your excuse to come back to the lake. Release notes (via gbvdb.com) : ‘ “Keep It In Motion” is a propulsive, drum-machine driven pop song which features, unusually, acoustic guitars, strings, and Robert Pollard / Tobin Sprout singing together in a way not heard since “14 Cheerleader Coldfront” on 1992’s Propeller. Possibly. Bob recorded and sent to Toby at his home studio in Michigan for over-dubbing. Laughs Best is a 30-track ‘best of’ double album that gives the band the send-off they deserve. It’s fairly rare for any band to put out fourteen studio albums. It was the fifth from the reassembled ’classic line-up’ in two years and the first of two GbV albums in 2014. The album kicks off with a song that served as the lead single, Littlest League Possible. In an interview with Rolling Stone, Bob says that the song is a metaphor for his lack of desire to compete with other bands, explaining, “No competition, no pressure, no rules. The way I do things now is an absolute blast. I think one earns it when entering one’s golden years. Robert Pollard - Kid Marine // Released 2nd February 1999 (Fading Captain Series) // Kid Marine is the third Robert Pollard solo album and the first recording to be released under the Fading Captain Series imprint. I remember having to give this one a few spins before it sunk in. But when it did sink in - I loved it. It gave me hope that the Fading Captain Series would offer up lots of strange, wild, unconventional, beautiful music… and over the course of eight years it did all that and more. The album features Bob on vocals, guitar and keyboards along with Jim Macpherson on drums and Greg Demos playing bass. Tobin Sprout, Jim Pollard and some others also make contributions. There were 1000 copies pressed of the original ‘99 issue. The first 500 were hand-numbered by Bob. I have one of the unnumbered 500. And there were still another two albums to come before the year was out. The album title apparently comes from a song written by Bob in the late 70’s, titled Zeppelin Over China (And Everybody Thinks It’s A Raincloud). It was originally written for a local Dayton band called Dash Rip Rock and The Hairspray Boys. He eventually retitled the song as Theolonius Has Eaten All The Paper and recorded it with Circus Devils on their album Five (2005). Of course, the second part of the title became Everybody Thinks I’m A Raincloud (When I’m Not Looking) from the ‘final’ GbV album Half Smiles Of The Decomposed (2004).
