Brilliant psychedelic record with primitive electronics that was one of the primary blueprints for Stereolab, Broadcast and many other leftfield pop bands. . Test press blank white label with SD-1/SD-2 runout matrixes that are unique to the test pressings. . Like all test pressings, not many of these were made and almost always only used in-house at the label and pressing plant. . Test pressings were not built to last and degrade after each play. This one has some bips and bops throughout but no skips. . Surface marks and blemishes but retains shine. A Visual VG. Not the audiophile copy to have (no test press is) but definitely the most collectible pressing and “closest to being there” as one particularly funny eBay record seller likes to say. . One of the most complicated gimmick covers ever released from Swirl Vertigo. This copy is immaculate without tears, rips, or creases. Exceptionally well taken care of. There are some inevitable rub marks around the edge, but I mean very minimal. No signs of re-painting. The record looks like little played. But there are two minor fingernail marks on the beginning of side B that affect light ticks for a few revolutions. Other than that, it looks and plays NM. Sounds Of Salvation - S/T [US, Xian Folk] (late 60s/early 70s?) This record is pretty special to me. Among the first to really get me sold on Xian folk and the whole private press sphere in general. Once I heard "So For Now" I was hooked. There's a great story behind it too. It's a collaborative effort between 7 people from all over - from Illinois to Wyoming to even India! I only know of one other record from this group, which I'm currently hunting down. The song playing is called "The Wind Was Low" and is among a handful of songs written by Reuben "Ben" Sample which really make this album for me. The first side is leaning more towards gospel-like folk rock, while the second side softens down drastically - a blithe breather. I assume it's Sample on lead vocals, who has a lovely tenor. *** The Tangerine Zoo - The Tangerine Zoo *** original 1968 🇨🇦 press on Mainstream Records Earlier this year I said I was going to slow down on buying records in 2024 and so far I’ve completely failed in my attempts. I’m probably just lying to myself anyway. Isn’t it always the case that you when you make a decision like that, a record like this comes along in decent shape for a decent price. How could I say no? I won’t go into too much detail about this psychedelic rarity as most people that follow me are probably very familiar with it. For me, the strong songs on here are really strong. There are definitely a few mediocre tracks that could have been replaced with stronger cuts, but - Trip To The Zoo, Nature’s Children, The Flight and Symphonic Psyche are all winners. I’m really stoked to finally score another banger from the golden age of psych. As far as Mainstream titles in my collection go, I now own original Canadian copies of - The Amboy Dukes’ “Migration”, The Tiffany Shade and finally The Tangerine Zoo. I also have a reissue of The Stone Circus record (which doesn’t seem to get enough love imo). Paul Thomas - New In Town [US, Lounge/Soul] (1978) Equally cheesy and equally sincere, Paul Thomas delivers a very heartfelt LP of love song covers. He doesn't hit all the notes, but when he does, he does so with so much conviction you can't help but smile. All the instrumentation behind the buoyant vocals is played perfectly and supports the musical message. The song selection is also fantastic - Paul really knows how to pick the right tunes. His rendition of Carole King's "Beautiful" can't be beat! This record was released on his own imprint called P.T.M. Paul was a local lounge act and entertainer-to-be in the Las Vegas area during the 70s. Not sure how much more he performed, but I know he unfortunately has since passed. When I saw this album on an eBay listing, I couldn't find a discogs entry, which is always a great sign for me. Blind buys online are constantly a gamble, but when they pay off, they truly pay off! Various - Love Music Volume II [US, Psych Lounge Pop] (1973) Inaugural post ‼️ One of the most mysterious albums I've come across to date. Off the practically untraceable "Sound Values" label, there's a variety of tunes to match all tastes - sultry vocal jazz renditions, lounge pop, psych lounge originals - all backed by the ceaseless rainfall ambiance behind every track. Most people get this record for the eclectic "St. John's Wood" and for good reason, as "Sunflower" may be one of the most furtive, haunting and yet alluring songs ever recorded (practically tailor made for a David Lynch work), HOWEVER, you'd miss out by not enjoying all the other incredible tunes on here. A big shoutout to @robertjacobsanders for putting me onto this record a while back! Most of my expanding wantlist/collection is thanks to his lounge goldmine of a channel.
