The ‘Rhino's Ride’ from #INSBrahmaputra at Mumbai to #Brahmaputra River, commemorating the ship's 25th year in service of the nation, culminated on 09 May 2024. The motorcycle expedition was flagged off on 18 April 2024 and traversed over 3,000 kms. As part of the expedition, the team of 25 motorcycle riders interacted with over 8,000 students in 30 schools and Five #NCC units to motivate the youth to join the #IndianNavy as well as create awareness about #Agnipath scheme. The riders also interacted with personnel from #IndianArmy and #IndianAirForce spread across #Maharashtra, #MadhyaPradesh, #UttarPradesh, #Bihar, #WestBengal and #Assam to promote tri-service camaraderie. The team visited #Kaziranga National Park and #Pobitora Wildlife sanctuary, home to the One horned Rhinoceros that adorns the Ship's Crest. De vogel van de dag : de Junglemaina (Jungle Myna) What's in a name ? Van vogels die we in Nederland kennen zoals de (Stelt)kluut, de Grutto en de Kievit moeten we in de safarijeep altijd even de vertaalslag maken naar de engelse namen (Black Winged Stilt, Pied Avocet, Black Tailed Godwit en Northern Lapwing) en omgekeerd hebben al die Barbets, Wagtails, Egrets en Herons ook weer een naampje in het Nederlands. En dan zwijgen we nog maar over de lokale namen in het Konkan, Assamees, Hindi, Bengali of Singalees die onze lokale gidsen gebruiken. Een Maina is gewoon een Myna , en heeft ie een borstel op z'n snavel dan is het een Junglemaina/myna. THE SANCTUARY A phone call, a couple of years since the last one, to long-time friend Sougata, who runs Wander Trails, ended up in a meeting at Maibong Eco Resort bordering Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary. And what an outing it turned out to be! It was wonderful catching up with my friend and getting to know Nripen and his brother Homen, who own the resort, but much more than that was the lasting impression of the area’s quiet, quaint, and serene environment. The mandatory jeep safari through the sanctuary’s forest and grassland presented an amazing sight: the pachyderms loitering, grazing, or simply standing and munching lazily. You can’t miss these heavies; they were everywhere. For the record, Pobitora boasts of having the highest concentration of one-horned rhinos on the planet. We took short trips to popular spots to watch the beautiful drama in the sky as the sun went down, and drove down to the banks of the Brahmaputra and surveyed the expanse for a lucky sight of river dolphins. And yes, a lovely drive along a route flanked by green and golden paddy fields that spread to the horizon through localities with diverse communities and stretches where goats and kids exercised equal rights to the roadway. Finally, ending with a darshan at the Ganeshji Temple by the Kolong River in Boha. Life at the resort is about birds, fresh air, great food, and meditative calmness. Nurturing Nutshell We are in the land of 'lahe lahe' and so, even the mist over the water channel dissipates langiudly. It reveals a few huts across. A mahout walks his elephant to one where he waits patiently for the woman to pay obeisance to him and more importantly feed him a banana or two. Flapping his frond like ears meditatively, the pachyderm traces his way back in a bit to where he has come from. We are allowed to cross the bouncy steel bridge over the moat-like stream where sunken boats lie with the hycinth. The elephants, post their breakfast are ready to take us to meet the other beasts of this tiny sanctuary. The first few moments of being straddled so high across the giant's back are a bit unnerving. By and by one falls into it's rhythmic gait. We cross a grove of trees and damp streambeds under dappled light to come to open grasslands. A road nearby lets out the secret of how small this nursery is. An ashy leathery back reveals itself in the tall grass soon. The 'cursed' horn is no more than a stub on the female as she faces us. She has no issues having the elephant so close to her calf. We are either of no consequence or she can't, thankfully, make us out. (Imagine being stuck on an elephant having a face-off with a mama rhino in a snit!) Egrets perched on another's back give it away. Soon we are in the midst of almost half a dozen. The calves, though not thrilled with the company take their cue from the mothers. The lavender Queen's Crepe Myrtle has started to bloom and provides a pop of colour to the drab countryside. It will soon be a riot and a perfect backdrop to the beings of Pobitora. #pobitora #assam #elephant #rhino #nature

Black Necked Stork. Birds in flight look so elegant and that is also when you get to see their wings. An interesting fact about these storks is that they sometimes carry water in their bill to chicks at the nest or even during nest building or egg stages. Like other storks, they are quite mute except at their nest where they make bill-clattering sounds. Happy that we went for the safari in spite of the early morning rain and the ongoing light drizzle. In fact, the mystic ambience because of the haze was somewhat more exciting! Meghalaya Diaries - Part 9 Following the mesmerizing visit to Sacred Forest we moved towards final location of our tour- Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary in Assam. We had to say final goodbyes to Wonderful Meghalaya. We had planned for the Jeep Safari and Elephant safari one after the another. But later we came to know elephant safari wasn't available on the day we planned it. Since it was 'Bihu' festival on that day, it was a holiday for elephants too 😄. Luckily Jeep Safari was available, so we booked it and experienced the wildlife. We all were excited to see wildlife in Pobitora Sanctuary, especially for One horned RHINO. We have been told that probability of getting to see Rhinos in Pobitora is more than that is in Kaziranga. Hence, we chose Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary over Kaziranga National Park. The separation from our families during Bihu was difficult, but the “ATTACHMENT WEEK” had really managed to compensate the pain to some degree, didn’t it?😃 The “Bihu celebrations” at our hostel was delightfully and enthusiastically organised & celebrated and truly provided us the taste of the magical festival, that we were missing terribly, even now. 😇😇 Having OTs from east to west & north to south of the State readily made the event more enjoyable & memorable. 🤩🥳 The “week of attachment” profoundly attached us with the corners of the Metropolitan & Pobitora WLS and truly provided the opportunity to spend time amidst nature, sunshine, wind and of course, rain. ☀️ 🍃 🌧️ Learnings in this week extravagant as we were shown how Villages are being administered and booming the economy of the Country & State. 🇮🇳 Such highlights were Organic Tomato farming, different approaches taken by Government to pump money into rural economy to make Villages more ATMANIRBHAR, how potable & safe drinking water is getting delivered to our villages(SDG-6). 🍅💧💵 However, it must unanimously agreed upon that the major highlight of this week was “VISITING THE RAJ BHAWAN, ASSAM” and interacting with the “GOVERNOR OF ASSAM”. 🥹🥹The dream that probably many of us(like me) didn’t have the courage to weave just one year ago has came true and truly touched the hearts of all 83 of us. Words will fall short to describe that cloudy & overcast evening. Doesn’t it!!😌😇 And the cherry on the top was added when we got to see not one or two, but many “ONE HORN RHINO”, the State Animal of Assam at Pobitora WLS. The scenic roads covered by trees on both sides had made us melancholic & jubilant at the same time. Lifer 349 and 350: Common Kestrel and Himalayan Buzzard: I have seen the Kestrel many times in life but never made a decent shareable image. This time, when I saw one out of our car window, I decided to go for it. Not the best perch but this Kestrel was on a transmission line and gave me a few shots before flying off. On the contrary, this was the first time I saw the Himalayan Buzzard on a very beautiful perch in Mandala, however, with the sky as the background. I could just make a record shot before it flew off possibly towards a flock of minlas and rufous capped babblers it was eyeing.
