I’ve noticed in the past couple years, how much anxiety in women has gone up. I think generally in society too, but I’ve definitely noticed it checked off on every single intake form I get these days. 😔 We don’t really use the word “anxiety” in Chinese Medicine. We have over-thinking, pensiveness and nervousness. But when you carry that into Chinese Medicine and the movement of Qi, it’s all concentrated upwards, into the mind, heart and chest….with anxiety that’s where all your energy goes. Therefore anxiety is a condition of too much Qi focused upwards (and can feel binding) instead of evenly distributed and more importantly grounded downwards. That’s why acupuncture is so helpful, it circulates your Qi and the right points can help ground you again. . Anxiety can show up with a number of physiological symptoms. A tight chest, shortness of breath, change in appetite, sleeping too little, sleeping too much and sometimes it’s not that far away from its sibling of depression. Everyone’s anxiety presents differently and that’s why everyone has a different treatment plan with acupuncture. Here are some the more common diagnosis: . 1. Shen/Sprit Disturbance - this means something is bothering your emotionally. Your shen lives in your heart, it goes there to sleep at night and in the day it shows in your complexion and eyes. 💛 2. Blood Deficiency - Blood and Qi hang out together. Qi is ethereal, we can’t touch it, but blood is tangible. Therefore if the quality and quantity of blood is low, the energy has nothing to ground in. 💕 3. Heat in the Heart - Heat, like fire, can be reckless and heat like in the atmosphere rises. So when you have excess heat it goes into your head and possibly your heart making everything move quickly like your thoughts and your heart rate (heart palpitations) 🔥 Some tips - making a routine, or a small ritual for yourself daily can help with your anxiety, as can journaling, talk therapy (with friends or professionals), eating well, reducing coffee & caffeine and including gentle movement. Anything that you feel moves your energy and especially ground it downwards into the earth is best. 🌾🌳🌏

Life lately has been really hard to navigate. For the past few months, I’ve struggled with on-and-off exhaustion and fatigue. I’ve immensely struggled with my mental health, and my motivation to do anything has been an uphill battle. I don’t want to sound all doom and gloom (a constant battle I face when sharing some realities on here 🥹). Some days have been better than others, but in the grand scheme of things, it’s felt like I’ve had a grey cloud covering me. Now and then, a rainbow would appear, but the grey cloud would soon return 🌧️ It’s been a weird feeling to navigate, especially when I have the best support system around me and a partner who goes to the ends of the earth to protect me in every way; I swear, if he could wrap me in bubble wrap, he would 😅😂 But there’s an upside! I’ve finally been to see professional help, and it’s all being rectified—it will be a journey and it has been one hell of a journey, but I took the leap to seek help. So what I thought was me losing my mind and myself in the process is something that needs sorting and does require some medical attention and support. This weekend, I felt like I had some extra energy for the first time all year! 🥹☀️ Maybe it was the sun? Maybe it was the prospect of new medication? Maybe it was my hormones finally adjusting? Well, whatever it was, It felt incredible, and it was a tiny glimmer into the future of when I’ll be back to my usual self-fighting fit. I’m grateful for my body and for everything that it can do, but it’s been frustrating battling with it every single month. I hope that over the next few months, little by little, I will become healthier, happier and physically stronger. If you know something isn’t right with your physical or mental health, please don’t be afraid to seek help and please don’t put it off for as long as I did 💗 you deserve the help and you are worthy of it.

Has Vitamin D supplementation helped your premenstrual moods? Despite its vitamin title, Vitamin D is actually a prohormone or precursor of a hormone – a substance that your body converts to a hormone. Vitamin D has been shown to directly or indirectly regulate hundreds of genes, and it's important in the production of neurotransmitters like serotonin, and hormones including estrogen and progesterone. Vitamin D functions through a single vitamin D receptor (VDR), which has been found in female reproductive tissues. Several studies report that vitamin D deficiency affects both insulin secretion and insulin resistance, which is a hallmark of the polycystic ovarian syndrome, one of the most common endocrine disorders that affects reproductive age women. Vitamin D deficiency is also associated with the depressive condition known as Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) Deficiency is surprisingly common. You may be at greater risk of vitamin D deficiency if you: > have naturally dark skin > avoid the sun (eg due to previous skin cancers, or sensitive skin) > have limited sun exposure (eg night shift workers, office workers, those who spend a lot of time indoors or wear covering or concealing clothing) > have a magnesium deficiency: Magnesium is required for vitamin D absorption > are overweight or obese > are older - your skin's ability to make vitamin D reduces with age > have a medical condition, disability or disease that affects vitamin D metabolism: Including kidney and liver disease; coeliac disease and inflammatory bowel diseases such as Chrohn’s > take medication that affects vitamin D metabolism The best source of vitamin D is from safe and healthy sun exposure. Understanding your cycle is so important to cycle-syncing your entire life. There are four phases of your menstrual cycle, and it’s so much more complex than being on your period or not being on your period. Your body goes through different phases each month, just like the weather goes through different seasons. Here’s a quick breakdown of what each week of the month looks like. P.S. Make sure to SAVE THIS POST for future reference. Menstrual cycle: Also known as your period. This is when you shed your uterine lining. A typical period lasts 3-7 days. This is when all hormones are lowest and you may find yourself feeling fatigue and/or sluggish. Follicular phase: This phase begins after your period stops and lasts until ovulation. This is when energy levels are beginning to rise again. Ovulation: Typically happens 14 days after your period. This is when energy and libid0 are high. Luteal Phase: This is when appetite is highest and your metabolism increases to prepare for your time of the month again. This is when most women notice a spike in their hunger levels. Calcium is crucial for strong bones; we’ve all learned this from grade school, but it’s especially important during perimenopause and menopause! 💪🌟 I know everything is protein, protein, protein right now, but please don’t forget this important mineral. As our estrogen levels decline during our lifetime, bone density can decrease, making us more susceptible to osteoporosis. This is why calcium-rich foods like the list above are so important for women and to help maintain bone health. 🦴💕 Other tips to help with calcium are: 1) To make sure you have enough Vitamin D as it helps the body absorb calcium from the intestines. Spend time in sunlight, consume vitamin D-rich foods like fatty fish, egg yolks, or consider a vitamin D supplement if needed. 🌞🥚 2) Whole foods that are rich in calcium will be a natural, whole source and easy ways to absorb and digest calcium. Try to rely on food sources vs only supplements. Dark leafy greens are one of the best sources! 🥦🌿 3) Balanced Diet - try to have a diet with adequate amounts of protein, magnesium, phosphorus, and vitamins C and K, as they also contribute to bone health and calcium absorption. 🥗 4) Limit Caffeine and Soda!!! - Besties, this is SO important! They interfere with calcium absorption!!! 🙅🏽‍♀️☕🥤 5) Regular Exercise - Weight-bearing exercises like walking, jogging, dancing, or resistance training stimulate bone formation and improve calcium absorption. 🏃‍♀️💃 6) Spread Intake - If you are going to increase calcium-rich foods, try and do it throughout the day rather than in one large meal, as this allows for better absorption. 🍽️ 7) Avoid Excessive Sodium - Reduce intake of high-sodium foods, as excessive sodium can increase urinary calcium excretion and decrease calcium absorption. 🙅🏽‍♀️🧂 I hope this information helps! I LOVE this post! I knew that coming off a busy period in Jan/Feb that if I didn’t schedule in self care it wasn’t going to happen and I was going to probably burn out. So I made a wellness calendar and it helped me SOOO much. It’s actually like a kids chore calendar, 😂 I write out my steps, when I went to the gym (has to be 3x/week for me to get my gold check marks lol) everything is highlighted with goals and it’s on my fridge to remind me. As women it’s easy to lose ourselves in life, in literally just being and doing. 3 focus areas 👇 1️⃣Nourishment The first thing that we did was focus really heavily on nutrition, not just with quality and good quality foods, but also making sure that she was eating enough. We actually got her calories up from 1800 to 2500+ depending on the day! 2️⃣Temporarily cut back on exercise The second thing that we did is we actually cut back first on exercise. And then when we realized that we needed maybe a little bit more stability, we actually temporarily took out exercise and just focused on walking in a moderate amount. 3️⃣Functional testing We did Dutch testing, blood work and HTMA assessment, and also a GI map. It wasn’t all at once, but it really helped put together her specific protocol, specific supplements that can help support that because she already had some really solid nutrition and lifestyle habits. Let’s talk about PMDD for #pmddawarenessmonth - something that personally impacted my life for years. Pre menstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) is a serious hormonal health condition caused by the menstrual cycle. It occurs during the luteal phase (between ovulation and when your period starts). It lasts around two weeks. Most people have heard of PMS/T, typically affecting women for a day or two prior to their period, causing fleeting uncomfortable physical & emotional symptoms which pass as soon as their period arrives. Many girls/women are fortunate enough to have their period come and go without minimal problems. However, others are blighted by this extreme and often life changing condition. You might ask…”isn’t it just like PMT?” or “is it just a hormonal imbalance?” - the answer is simply, NO! Here are some PMDD facts… 1. Autistic women, and women with ADHD, are disproportionately effected by PMDD. 2. Hormone sensitivity. As people with ADHD have reduced dopamine levels across the brain, hormone fluctuations may be more likely to reduce dopamine to critically low levels. 3. Major hormonal events like puberty, pregnancy and menopause can both trigger and exacerbate PMDD. Symptoms Include: Emotional * mood swings * feeling upset or tearful * lack of energy * less interest in activities you normally enjoy * Intrusive thoughts or s0icidal feelings * feeling angry, anxious or irritable * feeling overwhelmed or out of control.
