WASILLA, ALASKA: WHERE THAT LONESOME WHISTLE BLOWS  Frame 1: Last night’s northbound ARR freight sandwiched between Wasilla Lake and the old Wasilla Depot at its new spot in the new train station. The moon waxes toward full. Gepetto had been flying and hovering at various spots in the air for over half an hour before I heard the whistle and had to settle on one. I did. This one.  Frame 2: After the lead locomotives passed, I decided I had better fly Gepetto back to the car without further delay before I ran my battery down. As I began to close the gap, I saw the two mid-train locomotives roll into the frame so I stopped and took a shot. Just as I pushed the accelerator stick forward to get Gepetto moving again, the Frequent School Bus rolled into the frame. I could not let such an opportunity pass, so I shot again. The FSB delivered a photo bomb, and 500 bonus points for me. 'Baltic and a Ten Wheeler.' The 4-6-4s of the Milwaukee Road are quite smart with or without their streamline, these 4-6-4s were called Baltics instead of the word Hudson, and these engines were used in many of the famed Milwaukee Road passenger services. The 4-6-0 next to the 4-6-4 at Janesville, Wisconsin is also seen here operating a local passenger service, Milwaukee Road has some nice steamers, while the 4-8-4s are nice and all, it makes me wish that a Baltic was preserved. I have muttered in previous posts about the state of the model which I use for Charlotte, the haughty large Prairie who considers herself the unappointed boss of the Western shed in my stories. You have all been kind enough either not to notice or else to say, but this is the first time she has appeared in her model representation with not only all her buffers but both smokebox stays, to say nothing of a period-accurate rake of blood-and-custard coaches at last. The buffers I found lurking in the bottom of drawers and so on – which unfortunately means they must have been knocked off during the thirty years the model's been in my care, doesn't it? Sorry, Charlotte – but it's never had the smokebox stay with me, so I made one out of the end of a paperclip and stained it black with a Sharpie. Not exactly scratch-building! WASILLA, ALASKA: WHERE THAT LONESOME WHISTLE BLOWS  Photo One: Once again, I was headed to shoot further southbound when I spotted a big group of mostly young people, waiting for the northbound Denali Star. I pulled over at the next turnout and launched Geppetto, the DJI Air 3 drone just as the whistle blew, the Star rolled passed the Engine 557 Restoration Company and I had to race it a ways out over Wasilla to catch it while the group of mostly young people still waited. I would've wanted to get the California Zephyr but was unable to like the last three times I went here for these. Spot the difference St Blazey edition… St Blazey is the centre of Cornish railway operations because of the depot which services wagons and locomotives. In the 1930s the station closed and when the first photo was taken in 1961 the old station building was still standing. Taken a year ago today, Amtrak’s California Zephyr detours through the Nebraska Sandhills due to a washout on the Akron Sub (its normal route). This marked the first time since 2001 that Amtrak ran over BNSF’s Sandhills Sub, it was also the first time a scheduled passenger train ran through the Sandhills since 1968 and the first Zephyr since 1934. The California Zephyr specifically has never traversed this section of railroad - a one day only affair. Four years ago today, the Des Plaines River was reeling from the effects of eight inches of rain over a four day period. This ended up being a top five crest for the city of Des Plaines, resulting in flood waters seeping into the lower lying neighborhoods of town near the river, so much so that it nearly made it up to the UP Harvard Sub viaduct. In this image, METX 79 leads an outbound UP-NW train over Campground Road, which you can only make out by way of street signs in this image. WASILLA, ALASKA: WHERE THAT LONESOME WHISTLE BLOWS  In my “Lonesome Whistle” post of May 1 where this dock is seen emerging from winter ice, I stated, “Before this month is over someone will sprint the length of this little dock, take a mighty leap and then splash down into the still chill waters of Wasilla Malibu.” It has happened. I don’t know for certain when the first leap off the dock into the chill waters of Wasilla Lake took place, but I do know it had happened by the time I took this photo yesterday evening. I also know that the person paddling in place in the chilly - frigid, I’m certain - water off the end of the dock and the youth standing on the edge looking at him are so tiny in the frame that those who view this on a phone or worse yet a smartwatch will likely not see them at all without zooming in. The same holds true for the half-moon hanging in the upper third section of this image. Worse yet, the degradation of resolution and picture quality resulting from the Instagram and Facebook posting process will further diminish the experience. Ahhhh, but to see it at full res on my iMac! I believe it is one of the very best photos I have taken over the four years I have been working on this strang, pandemic-launched project of mine. With the Kingston subdivision closed between Cherry Street and Pickering Junction for weekend trackwork, Sunday afternoon's no. 54 - the milk run to Ottawa - has come up the Bala subdivision to Doncaster and across the York subdivision before resuming its normal routing. About 10 minutes behind its amended timetable at Oshawa, it will only skip Gananoque Junction on its run eastward. . VIA Rail is midway through delivery of 32 trainsets to replace the equipment currently used in the Québec City - Windsor corridor, and Siemens Charger SCV-42 no. 2205 - paired with Siemens Venture coach set no. 2304 - was delivered in June of 2023. For today's #flashbackfriday, we are revisiting the Southern's name train, the Tennessean, which began operation on today's date in 1941. This early streamliner, one of Southern's first two, replaced the Memphis Special, utilizing the same route between Washington and Memphis via Chattanooga, but with modern streamlined equipment. After declining ridership, the Tennessean was removed from service in 1968. On one of the final runs, EMD E7A 2908 is pictured here at night at its western terminus in Memphis, TN, at Union Station.
