We wrapped up our program at the end of March. It’s always bittersweet to close out the season. The sweet is the warm, friendly environment that together, all of our volunteers created every Friday night during the five coldest months of the year. The sweet is also that the weather is getting warmer and knowing that our guests who spend a lot of time outdoors will not have to endure the frigid temperatures. The bitter is the reality that many of our friends who participate in our program do not have regular access to good food, clothing, necessities and a safe place to sleep. From November through March, we saw the needs of our program grow, and we know that, given the current situation in Toronto, they are not going away. If you have the means and time to help someone in our community who is unhoused, offer a warm smile and a friendly greeting, and if possible, consider fulfilling a need they may have. Whether providing a cup of coffee, a gift card or a nourishing snack, even a modest gesture of compassion can make a significant difference in their day. And for more resources: 2-1-1 is a helpline that easily connects people to the social services, programs and community supports they need. #outofthecold #outofthecoldeastend #community #helpingothers

Thanks to a generous gesture from one of our volunteers, our guests were treated to a pre-dinner snack of samosas that everyone thoroughly enjoyed. Warm soup and a delicious chicken souvlaki dinner followed. It must have been this yummy food that inspired the creativity in the dining room on Friday night — check out some of the art pieces our guests were working on. 🖼️ 😊❤️ In both dining rooms, every seat was full and tables were buzzing with conversations among longtime friends and new acquaintances. It’s always heartwarming to see how so many of our guests look out for each other in the kindest of ways helping each other access care, necessities and support. At our Friday night program, food is love — it’s a heartfelt expression of care and compassion. ❤️ In the bustling kitchen and lively dining room, volunteers (shown here) come together to create & serve warm, nourishing meals that provide not just sustenance, but also a sense of dignity and belonging. These meals aren’t just about filling empty stomachs — they’re about nourishing souls and fostering connections within the community. As plates are passed and conversations flow, barriers dissolve, and a profound sense of kinship emerges, reminding us all that in the act of giving and receiving food, we’re truly sharing the most fundamental form of love and humanity. In the words of one of our guests last night, “It’s very hard time to live outside right now, there are more people doing it and it is very unsafe, especially for the people who are new to the streets and don’t know where to go. Tucked among the trees in Baysville is a little church full of people with big, generous hearts. Every year, the congregation at Norway Point Community Church gives to our Muskoka community with donations to local charities and groups. It reached 15C in Toronto during the day on Friday, “Out of the mild” was the joke we heard multiple times and we all laughed. To be honest, we were not completely sure how many guests would be participating in our program that night but we had lots of soup, delicious meals, homemade desserts and snacks ready to serve — and clothing essentials ready to distribute. Not long after the doors opened, all of our available beds were spoken for and our tables in both dining rooms were full. The church was buzzing with the same warm, jovial energy it has every Friday night. “It’s the kindness inside that makes this place so special,” one of our guests announced loudly at his table and made sure our volunteers overheard. Cold is so much more than a temperature. People who do not have access to shelter or to safe housing are lonely, scared, exhausted and often juggling a load of both emotional and physical pain. Many say they feel invisible. Thanks to our volunteers (pictured here) — many who have been with us for multiple years, and several who joined us for the first time last night — we are able to offer a warm atmosphere at East End United on Friday nights and for many, that means a whole lot. And a big thank you to those who support Out of the Cold through financial, clothing and other essential donations. Late January/early February is a mood. Some of us refer to this as the winter blahs and to deal with it, we look for little ways to find the sunshine in our days. This week at our Friday night program, the sunshine came in the form of caring conversations, delicious nourishing food, a supply of warm clothing generously donated by the people in our neighbourhood, ICE CREAM SUNDAES 🍨🍧, fun socks, and as always, the friendly faces of our volunteers. February is a short month but it’s the hardest for those who don’t have access to a safe, warm place to sleep and a good meal. Out of the Cold offers hot meal, shelter from the cold, clothing, basic needs, warmth, dignity, and kindness to those in need in our community on Friday evenings from November to March. If you can offer assistance to help deliver these essentials, know that it makes a big impact on so many. In the words of one of our regular guests last night, “I don’t know what I would do if it wasn’t for the kindness of the people here.
