I come to this work as a learning and development specialist with expertise in behaviour change. While it might not seems like it, quite a bit of that work translates here. What I’ve learnt from a career spent trying to understand human behaviour, is that too often we expect people to change in order to fit the broken systems that fail them. 🤩 Shoes Organisation🤩 This was a project for a beautiful lady, who uses wheelchair 🦼 to go around the house, including getting into the wardrobe and get her shoes / clothes at a height that is accessible for her. My client initially bought the pull-out drawers for the wardrobe so she can pull the tubs out and get any shoes she wants. It seems ideal at first. However when all shoes get dumped into a big tub, it gets messy and confusing quite easily and quickly. So before she knew it, she needed to dive into 10 pairs of shoes (20 shoes in total) to just find one matching pair, and as time went by, 11 pairs, 12 pairs … How frustrating would it be if you were running late and rushing to get out of the door 😠 So I found the perfect solution for my client. 2 pairs of thongs or one pair of sneakers (small size shoes) fit nicely in these 40cm @kmartaus large & narrow clear drawers. My client can easily grab one pair of shoes before leaves home, and put them back to the empty drawers when comes home. All the boots fit in the small size shoes boxes also from @kmartaus, so the support worker can easily get to them when needed. No need to play matching games when it’s time to go out. Also let’s be honest, how beautiful and stylish these drawers look when displaying on the shelves. 🍷 Kitchen Cupboard 🍷 Kitchen is the heart of our home. 🏠 Simply because it’s the busiest center where we dedicate a significant part of our time when at home. Kitchen is the place that everyone in the house will go & get something from, multiple times a day and every single day. Due to the functionalities of the kitchen space, it can get extremely overwhelming when you want to make a start to organise your kitchen. It can feel “it’s too much 😨” when you are thinking about organising the kitchen because there are so many cupboards are in there. However the good thing about organising kitchen cupboards, well in most cases, is that you can declutter / organise one or a couple of cupboards at a time. The cutlery and utensil drawers are usually my first 2 go-to drawers for a kitchen decluttering/organising project. But when you break it down the whole kitchen into single cupboard, the following 4 cupboards are also easy to start and finish. - Undersink: a good wipe over and clean out, a good sorting then grouping like items with proper products would do the trick quick and easy - Medications: you know what you /your family need, the intake frequency and the priorities. In most of the houses I have had worked in, 30% - 50% will either be expired or no longer needed. - Coffee / tea cups: you know your preference, you know your collection. Make all your collectables more presentable on a little shelf will give all the cups a new life. - Glass cups/wine glasses: it’s the same as the coffee/tea cups: keep the ones either you love, you want to keep or you know you will use while using little foldable shelves to create more space and maximise the vertical space However if you still find it too hard, or you simply don’t have time for it, DM me with some photos, let’s transform your kitchen for you . ⛑️ Office ⛑️ How good does this office look after a few hours work ? 😍😍 My client was in awe of the transformation when I showed her and she couldn’t believe that this project was way more easier than she thought. Because of the amount of the paperwork that had built up over time, my client was very concerned before the session and believed that it would definitely be a very difficult project. It was very overwhelming when looking at the mountains of paperwork and items scattered across the room. But soon as I made a start, removed things from the table and started to sorting them on the floor, section by section, it got easier every second passed. Did we go through everything that day? No we didn’t. But we surely did the most difficult part of this office project, which was going through everything that was on the table. Now my client can go through all the paperwork that was already filed and categorised on the bottom shelves with her own paces and it won’t be overwhelming again. Also, on the day I worked on this office, I didn’t just work on the office. I also gave the entryway console a good fresh up. And I picked up the clean towels that my client washed last week and put them back in to the linen cupboard I sorted 2 weeks ago. 🪣 Walk-in Laundry 🪣 This space, it’s a multi purpose space. It’s a laundry room. There is a washing machine, a dryer, and a corner for ironing/folding clothes. It’s a walk-in linen. My client stores all the towels, quilts, bed sheets, blankets in the cupboards that are in this room. It’s a storage room. There are bits and pieces that are rarely used have been kept in this room. It’s a space that requires high functionality. To complete this project, the job included sorting, categorising, cleaning, organising and labelling. Clutter hotspots 👀 Kitchen sides, dining tables…any clear surface anywhere! I find that when these spaces are ‘dressed’ in any way it makes everyone think twice before dumping their stuff! And anything that is left laying around gets cleared away quickly because it looks out of place. Placemats and some flowers on the dinner table keeps it clear for mealtimes. A vase, picture frames and a basket for keys and bits and pieces on a sideboard can prevent larger things or piles of stuff piling up! If there is somewhere in your home where things are always being left, (receipts/keys/coins/ random pocket junk!) a box or basket can at least keep those things contained. 🧂Pantry Refresh🧂 I originally organised this pantry in March 2023 and it was an awesome pantry project that everyone loved it so much. As you can see from the pictures, I repurposed nearly all of the baskets that my client already has. What a massive difference it made just rearranged the layout of the baskets. My client reached out in February this year and asked me to go back to give the pantry a refresh session plus another awesome project (I will share in a separate post 😉 ) I have to say, they maintain it really really well over 12 months of time. 95% of the items are still in position. So I didn’t need to spend a lot of time rearranging items. But because it’s an open shelf pantry, it does get really dusty over 12 months of time. So for the refreshing session, I pulled all the baskets and turntables out, gave them all a good wash and wiped over all the shelves so everything went back into a clean pantry. I also added a couple more baskets, which were spare ones my client already had, for more items to be homed. 👗 Wardrobe 👗 This is a very common size/shape walk-in wardrobe. With hanging rail being low, it’s pretty impossible to add anther hanging section underneath. Hence it is import to think about how to utilise the space under the hanging space. These shoe boxes from @kmartaus are brilliant. I got the large size ones that they fit heels standing up perfectly. So my client can get to her shoes easily and she will always know where should they go back to (empty box) 😉 I used additional two baskets at the bottom, one is for daily sneakers/thongs etc and the other one is for towels, so the space is not wasted. I think this wardrobe is beautiful and also practical. 🗒️ Little Note 🗒️ Today I worked with a NDIS client, who I have been working with for the last 3 Mondays. He has lived in the house for many years and the house is filled with a lot of stuff. When I did my first consultation, I needed to “dance around “ to go through the entry way to get to the lounge room. It was literally packed. So the past 3 weeks, we have been working on letting go of something, sorting something and storing something. Before I left today, my client said to me “ the lounge room is finally a lounge room and it’s the first time I have seen the lounge room floor since I moved in here.” What a statement. The happy smile on my client’s face is precious and I’m truly grateful to be in an industry that I can help people “find” their home, to enjoy their home and to be able to relax in their home. I’m not able to share today’s work here, but I hope if you are at a state that you feel you can’t breathe when you are at home because it’s cluttered, it’s packed, it’s everything everywhere, and it’s too hard to get it sorted yourself, outsource it and get the help you need. Preparation is key… For my week to go how I want it to I prepare for it and that starts on a Sunday. I create a list of all the things I want to get done that week and I then priories them in order of importance. Once that is done, I then check the calendar to see what I have scheduled in, client calls, appointments etc and then I start to time block everything. I give every task a time that I am going to work on that task, include all the scheduled things from my calendar and then my week is planned. 👗 Wardrobe 👗 To make the tallboy more functional and sections more clearer for my daughter, I added a couple of things in the drawer. I used the @ikea_australia SKUBB cubes for socks and underwear. I then added the bamboo divider from @kmartaus for other drawers. Everything has a home and super easy for my little one to find items at getting dressed time. What do you think? 🌟 The yearly to do list!🌟 February is going well! (The garden tap has stopped dripping so can put that off for a little longer 😆) It’s not particularly exciting and it’s not a list of super important stuff, but it’s real. 💁♀️ It’s a mix of things I want to do, little house jobs that will help keep things organised/clutter free, and things that need to be kept on top of so they don’t become harder to do later on! Then there’s the inbetween stuff I don’t want to forget to do, because I find it’s all those niggly things that fly around in my head all the time and stress me out! Two months in and I’m still loving this method❤️❤️❤️ Every month for the rest of the year already has a list. Every time I think of something new or remember a time sensitive task it gets written down. Having a long to do list can feel overwhelming, but I’ve found having it all broken down into months far less stressful. I can focus on the jobs for the month we are in and completing forget about the rest! Give it a try! Does being organised affect your mood? I didn’t think it affected mine until I experienced a week of lots of unplanned events and these events just sent the following 2 weeks into chaos and it affected how I was feeling. I was not motivated, tasks felt like they were bigger than they actually were and so I didn’t do them. The things that I needed to do felt so overwhelming that I just couldn’t focus on anything. Only noticed this morning that it expires this year! 👍When to apply for the baby’s nursery hours entitlement (free hours for the under 3s! Finally! Parents rejoice! 😂) Definitely adding a few ‘me’ things to Februarys list. I’d really like to actually try out some of the stuff I save on Pinterest and instagram every week! I’m starting with some homemade immune boosting shots, because I’m definitely done with the constant coughs and colds!
