As your baby starts the exciting journey of transitioning to solid foods, encouraging self-feeding skills is a vital step in your child's development. It builds independence, fine motor skills, and helps them explore different tastes, textures and sensory aspects of foods. Some babies take to finger food like a duck to water, but for many babies the transition takes a little more support from parents. Here are some practical tips to help you navigate this developmental milestone: 1/ Bigger is better: Introduce larger pieces of food that are easy for tiny hands to grasp and chew, without choking. Foods should be no smaller than your index finger. Think ripe banana, cooked potato or sweet potato. 2/ Does it pass the Squish test? If you are able to easily squish the finger food between you index finger and thumb, then your baby will be able to manipulate the food with his/ her gums. 3/ Utensil Practice: While most babies won't master utensils until around 18 months, let them explore early. Provide soft-silicone or plastic spoons to play with and encourage their curiosity. Offering a spoon loaded with food will further develop their feeding skills and coordination. 4/ Embrace the Mess: Messy eating is part of the learning process. Stay patient and capture the adorable moments—it's all part of the fun! 5/ Practice makes Progress: Learning to eat is as much about your baby learning the skills of eating different foods as it is about you learning to read your baby’s cues. Start with fingers and gradually introduce utensils as your child becomes a more comfortable and confident eater. Remember, every child develops at their own pace. By providing consistent mealtimes and positive opportunities for exploration and learning, you're nurturing your child's independence and setting the stage for a lifetime of healthy eating habits. ïżœ #simplestepsnutrition #healthybeginnings #startingsolids #first1000days #introducingsolids #motherhood #toddler #parenting #baby #parenthood #toddlerlife #toddlers #babyledfeeding  #babyledeating  #paediatricdietitian #dietitian #nutritionist #nutritiontips #dietitianapproved #nutritionforkids #nutritionforhealth #nutritionhowto #nutri

The convenience of food pouches for our little ones is a reality for many parents, and that's perfectly okay! Here are some tips to find a balance between convenience, nutrition and eating skills:: 1/ Read the Label: Be mindful of the fruit content - choose pouches with whole fruit puree instead of fruit juice to get the most nutritional benefits of whole fruits. For savoury options, check for a good iron rich option (meat, legumes) as well as vegetables and avoid those that contain added fruit puree or juice for sweetness. Avoid pouches with added sugar and salt. 2/ Moderate Usage: While pouches offer convenience, it's important to keep their use in check. Use them as a supplement to meals rather than a primary source of nutrition. This will ensure your little one gets used to a variety of tastes and textures while developing essential skills to self-feed. 3/ Opt for Hands-On Experience: While pouches provide convenience, aim to serve food in bowls whenever possible. This allows your child to engage with the food using different senses (sight, smell, touch, taste) while developing self-feeding skills with a spoon. Remember, parenting is all about doing what works best for your family at any given moment. Offering food pouches if you are travelling or pressured for time is perfectly fine, so don't stress and focus on finding the balance at the other meals in the day or week. #simplestepsnutrition #healthybeginnings #startingsolids #first1000days #introducingsolids #motherhood #toddler #parenting #baby #parenthood #toddlerlife #toddlers #newmom #paediatricdietitian #dietitian #nutritionist #nutritiontips #dietitianapproved #nutritionforkids #nutritionforhealth #nutritionhowto #nutritionhacks #nutritioninformation #nutritionistadvice

Are you in the introducing solids phase? Which parent are you? Baby-led weaning aficionado: You’ve done your research, stocked up on smocks and mess mats and are already experimenting with new foods for your little one Nervous nurturer: You are feeling a little nervous about starting feeding your baby – there are so many things that can go wrong! Could he choke? Could she have an allergic reaction? It feels like you’ve only just mastered milk feeds, so are putting off starting food for as long as possible Prepared puree parent: Your freezer is over-flowing with little containers of puree in every colour of the rainbow, but now your little cherub is simply spitting them out, which leaves you feeling frustrated and defeated. Just managing mumma: You’re exhausted and adding food into the mix just spells more washing. You’ve stocked up on puree squeezies and although deep-down you’re a little worried about how processed they are, so spending extra on the ‘BPA, organic, preservative-free’ options. Confused combo parent: You are still feeling confused as to whether you should be feeding your baby purees, finger-food or lumps, and to be honest, who has the time to figure it out?! Your little angel gets whatever you can grab Introducing solids can be tough. Stop Doing This To Yourself You’re lack of motivation comes from being constantly unsatisfied with your lack of progress So what if we re-framed the way we view the process? Keeping your eye on the prize is cool But have you ever stopped to think about how far you’ve come? I know you can get discouraged at times But it’s probably safe to say that you’re doing better than several months ago, right? That’s progress my friend And if you aren’t, then you’ve got some serious conversations to have with yourself and maybe a coach who can help Everyones rate of progress is going to be different based on several factors such as: -How much pain your current situation is causing you -Will Power & Determination -Experience level -Schedule -Age -Penis size (just seeing if you’re still reading here..😂) This is why random programs and diets aren’t going to work for you (Not because of wiener size. Because all the other stuff I mentioned. Stop thinking about wieners) You’ve tried them all and they only worked until they didn’t All that hard work and sacrifice only to rebound and end up right back where you started What you need is not only a sustainable plan that suits you and your lifestyle But also accountability, support and someone to celebrate all your victories with you along the way 100% of our clients will all agree Being held accountable is one of the biggest and most important component to coaching Because at the end of the day, us guys are usually ok with letting ourselves down from time to time But not with the dishonor of letting someone else down DM “ACCOUNTABILITY” to start your long term transformation and put an end to the on/off cycle when it comes to your health, confidence and well being . #ironwillpt #fitnesseducator #fatloss #fatlosstips #fatlosscoach #fatlossprogress #fatlosstransformation #fatlossplan #fatlossnotweightloss #nutritionCoach #nutritiontips #nutritionhowto #nutritionguidance #nutritiontip #getlean #getleanliveclean #leanmuscle #leangains #leanbody #leanandmean #leanmachine #leanstrength #leanmass #LeanOut #leanfood #leanlife #leaneating

The food your little one consumes now will impact their future. Whilst many parents don’t worry what their kids eat, as long as they’re fed, increasing amounts of research are showing us that the first 1,000 days of life, until our children’s 3rd birthdays, programs the future for our kids. Nutrition during these first 1,000 days of life has such a pivotal role in a child’s future that we predict that it will be the norm for every Maternal Child Health Clinic to have a dietitian on staff. We already see it now. Do you really think the Australian government would provide early intervention funding for dietetic advice through NDIS to young kids who are experiencing developmental delays such as faltering growth, difficulties with texture transition, sensory issues and fussy eating, if there wasn’t adequate evidence?! The research shows that nutrition, in this key period, influences brain development to impact future learning abilities, the gut microbiota to impact future digestive and mental health issues, the immune system to influence future health predictors and much, much more. When parents help their little ones dial in their nutrition in these key developmental periods, they are setting their children up to live lives where they’re healthy and flourishing. It’s exciting witnessing these cultural changes that prioritise our kids!

Having a little one with eczema is heartbreaking. Most people tend to go straight to ointments to treat eczema
which is understandable as you just want your little one better as soon as possible. However, ointments and creams usually don’t fix the underlying problem, and it’s back again within weeks. When we see little one’s with eczema, we have 7 key nutritional interventions that we utilise. I’m going to share one of my favourites with you today! What I want you to do is to assess your little one’s omega 3 intake. Research suggests that omega 3 is one of the best nutrients for preventing eczema. It has a powerful anti-inflammatory effect which helps to minimise the risk of flare ups. Aim for 2-3 serves of omega 3-rich fish such as salmon for your toddler each week. If your little one hasn’t yet started solids, or has a seafood allergy, opt for algal omega 3 supplement drops instead. These can either be added to a milk feed or your little one can suck them from your finger. I’d love to hear how you go!

So yeah let’s talk about this. It is widely believed that if we skip dinner or meals, we’ll loose fat more quickly but is it true? The answer is IT DEPENDS but on what ? Very simple on satiety and hunger levels. Honestly it is more than okay to skip meals but suppressing hunger or not eating up to satiety can mess up hormones therefore giving you head aches, or what is more common these day’s depression, anxiety, panicking etc etc. Now the question arises if we eat till we feel full then we end up gaining weight so the hell we should dooo?? Again answer is simple we need to change our food choices a bit for example having a big bowl of fruits and veggies is good for filling up and won’t increase weight too coz low in cals. And understand one thing skipping meals and suppressing your bodily need are two different things. Example you had a big breakfast and skipped lunch coz you didn’t feel hungry okay good no problem but on the other hand you’re deliberately skipping dinner thinking it’ll help loose weight then my friend you’re wrong it’ll mess with your sleep and leave you feeling lacking in energy in morning and you other things that happen when we don’t get a sound sleep. So moral of the story skipping meals is okay but suppressing hunger is not. Siyonaraa 👋 See you in the next one . . . . . #nutrition #nutritionist #nutritionCoach #nutritional #nutritiontips #nutritionable #nutritionplan #nutritionalcleansing #nutritioniskey #nutritionfacts #nutritionmatters #nutritionalyeast #nutritionschool #nutritionaltherapy #NutritionZone #nutritioncoaching #nutritionstudent #nutritionclub #Nutritionwarehouse #nutritionguidance #nutritionhowto #nutritiontip #nutritionstore #nutritionsystems #nutritions #NutritionGoals #nutritionalmedicine #nutritionaltherapist #NutritionalSupplements #nutritionalketosis

I work with many clients with ADHD and over the last few years I've been listening to common concerns and challenges around eating with ADHD. If you struggle to remember to eat at regular intervals OR If you find meal planning, decision making with food and sticking to a routine difficult, this one's for you. TIPS ON STICKING TO A SCHEDULE: 1. Set timers (on your phone or set reminders in your calendar) 2. Most people need to eat something every 3-4 hours (be it a meal or snack) so be sure to check in with yourself throughout the day (or have a friend, partner or colleague help with this). *phone timers can be helpful here 3. HABIT PAIRING. This one comes right from Atomic Habits. If you often forget to: eat, take medications or supplements - think about the habits you already have formed and try pairing your meals/snacks/supplements with that. For example, keep your supplements by your toothbrush, hairbrush, coffee maker or laptop OR keep your pre-packed breakfast/lunch bag/snacks with your water bottle or coffee creamer! TIPS ON DECISION MAKING: 1. Pre-plan your meal and snack options so that when the decision fatigue hits, your meal/snack choices are automated (check out my profile for more balanced meal/snack tips) 2. Keep post-its of what you have stocked to minimize time looking for options OR just keep them at eye level in your fridge/pantry Let me know... Did I miss anything? Do you have any tips to add?? This post is meant to help spark ideas and is not a substitute for medical/nutrition advice. Always talk to your doctor, dietitian or other qualified healthcare practitioner for personalized recommendations and advice.

✹ LANGUAGE IS EVERYTHING ✹ The language you use to describe food can have a direct influence on your thoughts and feeling. These 3 words are BIG red flags when I hear people using them. I know that using the words "eating clean" feels really good and that you're doing the right thing. From a dietitian's point of view, it tells me nothing about your diet. In fact, it puts all those foods you're calling "clean" on a pedestal, especially if you're referring to foods that are organic, non-GMO or basically anything with a super high price tag. Which, in turn, can make perceived "healthy eating" feel even more out of reach especially for folks with financial constraints. The word "clean" is elitist, non-descriptive and quite frankly, just doesn't make sense. The only time you should be describing your food as clean is if you washed it, thats IT! Similarly with "BAD" When we think of foods as good or bad only, we actually start to: 1. Place moral value on it and 2. Oversimplify food by dichotomizing it in this way. ALL foods can offer benefits, some more than others but that doesn't make them "good" or "bad" What I've noticed is that when I hear people describe their eating as "bad" I tend to also hear them say that they "feel bad" both physically and morally (e.g. guilt) Language is also important not just for you but especially if you have kids or young people in your life! The language you use can influence their relationships with food in a big way. Here are a few other phrases you could use instead: "I've been focussing on eating more nutrient dense foods lately" "I've been incorporating more plants into my diet" "I'm working on adding nutrition to my food, rather than removing foods"

2/29/2024, 3:01:01 PM

HEAR ME OUT I know this may sound obvious but I wanted to point out a few other benefits that may come with starting/increasing your daily movement and adding more nutrient dense foods to your day 1. Increased energy 2. Improved bowel movements 3. Improved sleep 4. Improved focus and creativity 5. Improved overall mental health 6. Improved confidence 7. Improved blood markers (if applicable) 8. Decreased risk of chronic disease What did I miss?

Transitioning your bub from a liquid diet to solid foods marks a significant milestone in your baby’s development, but it can also bring some challenges, like constipation. Solid foods require a bit more effort to digest. When babies start eating solids, their immature digestive system needs to adjust to the different components in food, particularly the various fibres and this adjustment can sometimes lead to constipation. If your baby seems uncomfortable or shows reluctance to eat, constipation might be the culprit. After 6 months, as you introduce solid foods to your baby, focus on incorporating fibre-rich options like fruits, vegetables, wholegrains, and legumes gradually while continuing to provide adequate liquid from breastmilk or infant formula. Foods rich in soluble fibre can help to soften stools. Good options include oats, fruit (particularly, apple, pear, plum, stone fruit, prunes, berries), legumes and soaked chia seeds. Sips of cool, boiled water can also be offered in between feeds. Remember, every baby is different, so it may take some trial and error to find the right balance that works best for your little one. Be patient, stay observant, and consult with your healthcare team if you have any concerns. Together, we'll help you navigate this transition for your baby with comfort and ease! đŸ’–ïżœ #simplestepsnutrition #healthybeginnings #startingsolids #first1000days #introducingsolids #motherhood #toddler #parenting #baby #parenthood #toddlerlife #toddlers #newmom #paediatricdietitian #dietitian #nutritionist #nutritiontips #dietitianapproved #nutritionforkids #nutritionforhealth #nutritionhowto #nutritionhacks #nutritioninformation #nutritionistadvice

✹ ABUNDANCE MINDSET ✹ This goes so far beyond just food but when we're thinking about healthy eating and healthy relationships with food. Mindset is everything and abundance is they key. Many people think "healthy eating" is all about the foods you don't eat but healthy eating is actually about the opposite. Instead of focussing on what you're having less of, let's think about what we can incorporate MORE of. Drop a 🙌 below if you agree

I want 2024 to be the year that qualified nutrition professionals take over on this app. As a Dietitian I get questions daily from clients asking if X, Y and Z that they heard on social media is true. Most of it is false, fear mongering or over exaggerated poor interpretations of the literature. I hear that a lot of people are confused. Folks are cutting out entire food groups because they "heard it's bad for them". Here's the thing... there is no one right way to eat for everyone. Although there are certainly guidelines and evidenced-based nutrition recommendations to include certain foods... There is no one food that you need to eliminate forever that is going to completely change your health (so long as you're not allergic to it or have a medical condition that stipulates you need to eliminate or follow a specific diet type *spoiler alert: this is what dietitians, and only dietitians who provide Medical Nutrition Therapy are qualified to help with). Questions? Let me know!

Everything we do in life is our choice, sometimes we get lost in the maze of expectations, yet the consequence of our choices is to learn and experience. Did you know that avoiding allergens is actually the worst thing you can do for your child's allergy risk? I know, I know, it sounds crazy, but hear me out. For years, we were told to avoid allergens like peanuts, eggs, and milk, because we thought that would prevent allergic reactions. But guess what? It actually does the opposite! Avoiding allergens is like skipping your meds when you're sick. The longer you wait, the worse it gets. So, what should you do instead? Well, the best way to reduce allergy and anaphylaxis risk is to introduce allergens early and often. But don't worry, you don't have to feed your baby a whole peanut butter sandwich on day one. Just start with a tiny amount, and gradually increase it as they tolerate it. And make sure you're prepared, just in case. Do it on a chill day, when you can easily go to the doctor if needed. Trust me, this is the best thing you can do for your child's health and safety. Don't let fear stop you from giving them the best start in life. Now, I have a question for you. What are some of the challenges you faced when introducing allergens to your child? Let me know in the comments below. I'd love to hear from you.

If you have big goals, especially around health behaviours like nutrition and exercise, start with these questions. When I work with clients I use Motivational Interviewing techniques to help empower and inspire them to make changes. I often ask them to start with these questions. I often hear that people have a long list of goals, or things that they want to change but that description can often be very vague. For example, you want to "eat healthier" in 2024, first start with: 1. What does eating healthier look like to you? ps. A dietitian can help with this! 2. What are some of the changes you think you'd need to make to your current routine to help achieve that? 3. Now what sounds like the easiest thing for you to start with? aka - what is your low hanging fruit? See the thing is, we feel motivated when we start somewhere which can often propel us forward to reach our next goal, and the one after that and so on. Questions? Need support? Let me know!

Does this sound familiar? Sometimes this is also called the binge-restrict cycle. In particular with the dieting cycle, when we take an all-or-nothing approach it usually ends up like this. I work with clients daily to help break this cycle. Not only can it be frustrating, but it can also be harmful for your health in the short and long term. If you're feeling confused about nutrition and like you've "tried everything" or you cant stand the thought of starting another diet know that you aren't alone.
