Greek Philosopher Heraclitus lived from 535-475BC. He believed in the constant state of change. Heraclitus’s most well known expression “no man steps in the same river twice”. That quote will be a post at some point. He also discussed the need for opposites to exist something similar to a yin and yang like theory. This quote is true and I embrace change. Even the vast mountains and everything we see will one day erode. It took me a very long time to be willing to change. It wasn’t until I realized that something new was my only option to survive. Part 2 The water was much deeper and rougher on the other side of the rock. I decided to go back the way I came, but the current was too strong, that was not an option, and I was growing tired, beginning to breathe in water and knew I was in trouble. I was beginning to drown and all I wanted was that next breathe of air and to make it back to the shore. The need for air is powerful, and the only thing that comes close to that is a drug craving but more subtle. I was trying to get to the side of the mountain. This was taking all my energy I felt like I was trapped and moving closer so slowly. I thought to myself I am going to die today, my birthday of all days and wife and son sitting at the shore. There was a sense of calm and I thought to myself “wow this is it, it was a fun ride”. Eventually I got closer to the side of the mountain and would be smashed against it and pulled back out. I clawed at the rock, loosing finger nails and cuts all over my legs. I was finally able to hang on and climb up the mountain and walked along the crest to the black rock and jumped off bloody and worn out. I made it back the shore and explained what happen. I learned at least 2 things that day-jg 1.) that being cheaper almost cost me my life. To save money I brought my own snorkeling gear that was subpar. If I had quality snorkeling gear this may not have happened. Part 1 This is one of my new death experiences. It was August 8, 2015. I was on vacation visiting Maui for two weeks with my wife and son. I can remember the date because it happened to be my birthday. We were visiting Black Rock Beach in Ka’anapali. At this time I was into snorkeling and even brought my own gear from home to save money on rentals. I had gone snorkeling a number of times by this point in the vacation and the tube and mouth piece were not working right and had been taking in water, so I decided to leave them at the shore with my wife and son. The beach is called Black Rock because of what appears to be black lava rock that protrudes from the sea bed and connects to the mountain. People climb the lava rock and jump off, and I had planned to do the same after my snorkeling. I went out into the water with only my googles and flippers. I decided to go around on the other side of the black rock to see what was there, hoping for a large see turtle, because days prior I saw the largest in my life and hoped to run into it again. I somewhat believe in both or maybe it’s just fate or providence. It was around 2012 I got fired from a good paying government job I planned to make a career. Being terminated was a direct result of my disease but I could not see it at that time. When I lost that job I entered a deep depression and by luck?, I won $47,777 from a scratch off lottery ticket. This came at a time when I was not of sound mind. My disease quickly progressed and much of the winnings was smoked up in a matter of months leading to my first residential treatment. My uncle that use to live in San Diego had a dog. My family would go visit my uncle, and I remember the dog just gobbling up these Milk-bones and I asked if they were good? and how they taste? My whole family said not to try them they are no good, but I didn’t take their word for it, because the way the dog ate them clearly they must be wrong, they must be delicious. So I decided to eat one, and my family was right they were terrible. Over the years many people told me many things, and the same thing would happen. People told me not to drink I said “I am an addict but drinking isn’t my problem” but it was I just didn’t know it yet. I still learn the most from my consequences and failures. Epictetus Part 2 2000 years ago Epictetus believed that unlike animals, humans had the ability to self reflect and to find the truth within. While animals behavior appears to be driven by instinct, humans have the capacity to observe that their behavior may be guided by perceived circumstances. His works that still remain consist of 4 books but it is believed the original works were 8 or more volumes. Epictetus was greatly influenced by Socrates, while actually by his student Plato’s portrayal of Socrates. Philosophers of this time came from a school of thought called Stoicism (300 BC) and the theory that virtue was required for happiness and that fate and providence were governed by God. Some consider Stoicism to have influenced the development of Christian morality and ideology. To remain both a teacher and student is one of the mottos I live by. At one point I thought I knew it all, and I remained ignorant. Addiction was a humbling experience that made me realize I knew little of controlling this compulsion, and actually knew little of controlling anything at all, and that was truly my dilemma. It was only when I stopped attempting to control everything, I found peace. I finally knew what I did not know. I never knew what happiness was for me, and I have finally begun to figure it out. For now happiness is not related to what I have or don’t have, it is what I am willing to gladly sacrifice for a greater good, something with more meaning and significance than myself. CBT Series Fallacy of fairness: when a person has rigid beliefs that their behavior deserves expected outcomes. This believe can lead to problems in relationships whether it be at home or the workplace. Fairness is subjective and can vary from person to person. To expect others to have the same beliefs is an unlikely expectation, beliefs can be greatly influenced by culture, thought, and emotions. Example: I work just as hard as my coworker, yet they get the promotion over me. Another one could be I think my partner should do the dishes since I cooked. Fairness is often what many arguments come down to in essence, if not that than your wrong and I’m right. CBT Series Aaron Beck in his article “The Past and Future of Cognitive Therapy” (Beck,1997). He describes how the CBT approach came to be. Beck explains doing an individual session with a female patient and at the end she shared how she was glad the session was over. Beck asked why and she said she was worried that she was boring him and feels that she bores everyone. Beck began to wonder if this core belief could be a part of her mental health diagnosis. Catastrophizing can be challenging because often the worst case scenario is a possibility, yet improbable or unlikely in most cases. It is hardwired into our brains to plan ahead, and it’s part of society with sayings like “hope for the best but plan for the worst” there is wisdom in things like that. Example: I have an upcoming court date and I am consumed by the idea that I will be sent to prison and never see the light of day again, my wife will leave, my kids will join gangs, etc…… This type of thinking can be challenged with a trained professional, but some insights that can be valuable are that many people spend a disproportionate amount of time focusing on the worst possible outcome. What could be helpful using the example above; I could set a timer on my phone and truly try to envision what it would my life be like if other things took place, like the case being dismissed, getting probation, getting out after 6-18 months. Also usually the worst possible outcome is out of our control, or we wouldn’t allow it to take place. It is helpful to understand that throughout the day the worst possible outcome rarely happens, every time I walk through a door there is potential for someone to smash my hand, even resulting in losing a limb or death but this rarely happens, so people are rarely overly fearful of doorways. CBT Series Cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) has grown to be one of the more popular approaches. CBT appeals to many people and has been extensively researched. One of the main concepts of CBT is cognitive distortions, this is the idea that many thoughts are not based in fact, but driven by feeling and past experiences. Polarized Thinking; comes from the definition of polarized being a sharp distinction of two opposing groups. Also known as black and white thinking. This is when a person has difficulty seeing the middle ground and they may struggle with making compromises with others, or struggle with motivation. Example; I set a goal for the next week to attend 7 social support meetings. On day 2, I miss a meeting and say there is no point of attending meetings the rest of the week. This type of thinking can be very detrimental to relationships and the recovery process. 7 meetings would be great, but even if we were to attend less meetings than 7 maybe 3 or 5, that would be of greater benefit than attending zero meetings. One of many ways to overcome this thinking is to rely on our therapist, sponsor, or network of support. Sometimes others can help us to see the subtle shades of grey and help us with motivation. The reason this is being posted is because we are starting a YouTube channel and much of the emphasis will be on community outreach. The first longer episode will be helping the homeless by delivering care packages (food, water, socks, and resources packets with info for programs). I got the food handler certification because we will be making them sandwiches.
