“In spite of fierce fighting with the Arakan Army (AA), the Junta is planning to push forward with reopening basic education schools in Rakhine State for the upcoming school year in early June. Township education departments have instructed education staff in certain Rakhine State townships…to return to their respective schools by the May 25 deadline, in order to facilitate student enrollment for the upcoming school year. The Junta has also issued threats, stating that teachers failing to report to the relevant schools and departments before the deadline will face salary reductions or sacking, according to the Rakhine State education community ‘Teachers currently residing in rural areas have been instructed to collaborate with existing teaching staff and work in local schools, while those in downtown areas have been instructed to return to their schools by the last week of this month,’ a high school teacher from Sittwe said…. In Rakhine State, fighting between AA and the Junta resumed in mid-November, and the intensity of the conflict has been escalating. As a consequence, education staff from both urban and rural areas have been evacuated to safer locations. A middle school teacher from Ramree told DMG, ‘We were told that teachers must be ready at schools, even if no students show up to enroll. Such pressure is unacceptable, especially during this time of widespread conflicts, but as education staff we feel we have no other options.’... The middle school teacher called into question huge safety issues. ‘If we return to our schools, who will ensure our safety? The current situation is very dangerous. We are concerned about being caught in the middle of conflicts, if we obey the order to return to respective schools. Therefore, we the education staff, are confronted with a difficult decision: whether to risk returning to work or resigning.’” Source: Burma News International, https://www.bnionline.net/en/news/junta-demands-reopening-schools-rakhine-state-despite-danger-heavy-fighting (May 10, 2024)

Birma to jeden z najbardziej buddyjskich krajów świata. Większość chłopców staje się mnichami dwukrotnie. Pierwszym razem w wieku pomiędzy 7, a 10 rokiem życia. Taki młody mnich w nowicjacie to samanera. Okres nowicjatu trwa od kilku dni do kilku tygodni. Po ukończeniu 20 lat ponownie wstępuje się do klasztoru, aby praktykować medytację, pokorę i dystans do ziemskich problemów. W każdej chwili można odejść z klasztoru bez żadnych konsekwencji. “Thanaka” - In a rural village just a half-hour tuktuk ride from Mandalay, a woman delicately applies the traditional thanaka paste to her face, using a mirror for precision. Thanaka, a paste made from ground bark, stands as a unique symbol of Myanmar’s rich culture. Typically adorned on the face and occasionally on the arms, it’s favored by women and children, though men also indulge in its application. The creamy paste is artfully crafted into appealing designs, often featuring circular patches on each cheek and nose. Some choose to stripe it with their fingers, a style known as thanaka bè gya, while others opt for leaf-shaped patterns that elegantly accentuate the bridge of the nose. With roots dating back to the second half of the eleventh century, Thanaka remains a staple in Myanmar. Its enduring popularity across Asia stems from its myriad of skin benefits, ranging from sun protection and refreshing qualities to moisturizing, mosquito repellent, antibacterial, and anti-inflammatory properties. Thank you so much for the warm reaction to the Myanmar photos I posted yesterday! It was lovely to see how many of you enjoyed them! . Since you did, I'm going to keep going... . One of the things I loved best about Myanmar is that the people were SO friendly and SO photogenic. In some places locals get very upset when tourists try to take their photos, but in Myanmar they were just lovely! . I really hope these people are doing OK. They don't deserve what is happening to their country :( . #myanmar #burma #myanmarphotos #buddhism #monks #buddhistmonk #yangon

“Zay Yar Tun fills his truck with water for delivery to refugees in the parched hills of war-ravaged eastern Myanmar, where a heatwave is adding to the misery of life in displacement camps…. In Kayah state, Augusta waits for the 10 gallons that must cover her family’s drinking, cooking and washing needs for the next three days…. A heatwave that has sent the mercury in Myanmar to 48 degrees Celsius (118 Fahrenheit) in some places…. ‘Last year, we got water from a spring nearby,’ Augusta told AFP. ‘But now we can’t get water from that place as there is no water left there.’ ‘We have to be frugal… If we don’t shower today, maybe tomorrow we can wash our hands and faces.’... A dozen or so camp residents queue up at the truck for water rations that will have to last them three or four days…. ‘When there were only residents living in this place, there was enough water,’ said Zay Yar Tun, of the charity Clean Yangon. ‘But after the displaced people fled here, the population is too much for the amount of water we can get here.’ Donations keep Zay Yar Tun’s team and its two trucks running, and they make two deliveries to the camp each week. Finding the streams or springs to fill up their truck can be dangerous in Kayah, which has emerged as one of the hotspots of resistance to military rule…. The fuel the team needs to run their trucks and pumps is expensive because of military restrictions on importing fuel into Kayah, Zay Yar Tun said. ‘The price of fuel is very expensive, and it seems like we are exchanging fuel to get water,’ he said…. ‘If we are going to take a bath in the creek, we have to go far away from the camp,’ she [Augusta] said. ‘It’s not a walkable distance under this temperature.’ ‘If we go by motorcycle, it’s not worth it because of the cost of fuel. If we save money for fuel, we may as well use it to buy water.’... ‘Sometimes we say to each other: ‘I haven’t got any water left, have you got any? Please could you give me some?' she said.’ ‘Our life has come to this, where we have to borrow water.’” Source: Mizzima, https://eng.mizzima.com/2024/05/05/9579 (May 5, 2024) | Radio Free Asia

I was recently asked to pull together images from Myanmar for a possible commission. . After doing all that work, the piece wasn't commissioned, so I thought I might as well share some of them here instead. Be a shame to let them go to waste! . Starting with a few photos of the famous leg-rowing fishermen of Inle Lake. You can read about them and see more photos here https://www.passportandpixels.com/leg-rowing-inle-lake-fishermen-myanmar/ . Myanmar is one of the most incredible countries I've been lucky enough to visit. It's SO photogenic, and the people are SO friendly. . At the moment large parts of the country are considered unsafe for travel, but I really hope things settle down again soon. The people of Myanmar deserve stability and tourism income, and you guys deserve the chance to see it! . #myanmar #burma #inlelake #legrowing #fishermen #myanmarphotos

“Phansaw, the first autonomous university, commenced operations in March at a certain location within Karenni State. Doctor U Kyaw Thu Win, appointed as the new university’s rector, explained that Phansaw’s establishment was facilitated by backing from the Loikaw University Interim Executive Council, the National Unity Government (NUG), and the Karenni State Interim Executive Council (IEC). ‘We have gathered all the essential teaching materials for the university, and our teaching staff, consisting of education professionals displaced by conflicts, is ready to support the students. This has encouraged us to establish a field university. In consultation with the NUG and IEC every step of the way, we received their enthusiastic approval. Despite facing numerous challenges, we managed to secure a location and officially launch our university. This signifies the beginning of a truly self-governing institution,’ he said…. At Phansaw, students have the option to delve into 14 subjects including: Myanmar, English, Mathematics, Geography, History, Physics, Chemistry, Zoology, Botany, Philosophy, Geology, Law, Oriental Studies, and Economics. Currently, accommodation constraints limit admissions to just 98 students, with teaching delivered both in-person and online formats. Phansaw offers programs from the undergraduate level through to the master’s degree, with a four-year duration for completion. Semesters are structured into three-month intervals. Doctor U Kyaw Thu Win noted that graduated students will receive certificates, along with support in connecting with employment opportunities…. Presently, Phansaw University is welcoming and educating a majority of students whose studies were disrupted during the pandemic, with plans to initiate distance education classes starting from June.” Source: Kantarawaddy Times, https://ktnews.org/first-autonomous-university-opened-in-karenni-state (April 24, 2024)

› Curating. Yangon, Myanmar The exhibition „Raving Madness / Coming Home“ was the first photobook exhibition ever in Myanmar, hosted by Myanmar Deitta @myanmardeitta in Yangon and kindly supported by The Goethe Institut Myanmar @goetheinstitut_myanmar. Curatorial text:
While our own state of mind is a vibrating string of steady motion, political, social, economic and personal changes seem to pass us by at breakneck speed, passing over and through us like an uncontrollable steamroller. The fast and surprising flashing of conflicts make the space around and between us become an unstable place: On the one side, never knowing what will happen next and being prepared for the worst, and on the other side - being forged by the emotions and learning to be guided by basic trust. With these two elements in a state of calm and chaos, there seems to be only two ways: raving madness, or coming home. Photographers and book titles featured in the show:

"A CDM doctor, who attempted to flee from Myanmar in order to avoid military conscription, died while he was on a journey to Malaysia and was buried today in a village of Karen state. The tragic death of an ethnic Chin doctor, who succumbed to extreme tiredness while attempting to flee to Malaysia has shed light on how military conscription forces people to flee the country.... Mr. Khual Sian Tung was a prominent member of the Civil Disobedience Movement (CDM) in Myanmar. Motivated by the illegitimate seizure of power by the military junta in February 2021, he joined the movement with the aim of restoring the democratic rights and freedoms that had been stripped away. As a CDM doctor, Mr. Tung played a crucial role in providing medical support to those who suffered COVID-19 during 2021 and 2022. Born in Tongzang township of Chin state, Mr. Khual Sian Tung pursued his medical studies at the prestigious No. 2 Medical University in Yangon. He graduated in 2015, earning his medical degree, and began his professional career in Mawlamyine, Mon State, and Thanlyin, Yangon region." “Due to the conscription law...students who have been away from university for a long time...are returning to school in large numbers. They chose to enroll in school to avoid conscription…. ‘School enrollment fees are about 70,000 kyat.… In the past, school enrollment fees were about just 20,000 kyat’ [said Ma Ohnmar, a school affairs assistant].… Those who can be temporarily deferred from military service are those who have received a certificate of unfit health, civil servants and students, those who are nursing elderly parents, those who are receiving drug addiction treatment, and those who are in prison…. A philosophy student of Dagon University told Mizzima that he was unable to go abroad…. ‘For me, going abroad is not easy. It’s not easy to even go to work, let alone go to school. What’s worse is that now I am the one supporting my family, so I can’t go to other countries like others. I had to go back to school because I became a little nervous about the military conscription law.’... ‘Even though we decided to go back to school, whoever catches their (authorities’) eyes might have to be forcibly conscripted.’ The age for military service is set as 18-35 years for men, 18-27 years for women, 18-45 years for expert men, and 18-35 years for expert women. Every eligible citizen must serve for 24 months in the army, and…scholars or experts must serve for 36 months. For some students…in addition to the school applications, they provide a testimonial certificate of attendance. It takes around 2 weeks to make the certificate and there is a price rate for the certificate. ‘It’s fine if you show the school enrollment. But, some eligible people are worried and try to get a recommendation letter. It costs about 20,000 kyat more for the letter of recommendation. Each price is different. Some of them set a higher price than this,’ said Ma Ohnmar…. The tuition fees of state-owned public universities used to be around 20,000 kyat per annum…. Currently, under the Military Council, the tuition fees of the state-owned universities have increased threefold.” Source: Mizzima, https://eng.mizzima.com/2024/04/08/8802 (April 8, 2024)

#Sejarah #Museum #Myanmar #Yangon #Asia #NationalMuseum #History #Travel  #Vacation #Photography #InstaMyanmar #Spirit #Life #TravelMyanmar #Creative #WhatsHappeningInMyanmar #MyanmarTravel #MyanmarPhotos #Story #Positivity #Journey #Diary #TravelAsia
