Maybe the mundane is (mostly) magical, even when it tastes like 💩. I had this talk tonight with young women at a gallery opening. “Do you manifest?” One asked. I answered how I feel like “manifesting”may just be another term for working hard to achieve your goals, and am sort of disappointed in having lost the sense of magic in that word. But then the other girl said she’d like to consider, then, that everything is magical. And I get it. In a way it is. Even the fact that I had the conversation with these strangers tonight over a little cocktail that had more tequila than I expected. Gardening can be part of your embodied spiritual practice. Oftentimes, when people think of spirituality, they imagine activities like meditation or putting together crystal grids. Honing your mind and working with subtle energies is important. So is focusing on and appreciating the physical world. You can also use your body and the world around you as focal points for your spiritual practice. There's something about the smell of moist earth that hits deep in the soul. It helps melt away the stress and angst from being in my head all day for my office job. The plants teach me patience - I can help them grow by watering them, but they will mature in their own time. They show that while you can have a hand in manifestation, you also need to surrender to the universe's timeframe. Plants are also (more or less) forgiving. They may droop if you miss watering time by a few hours, but it's not the end of the world. 📸 Garden in my front yard - I just transplanted marigolds, ornamental grass, sunflowers, and broom corn from my greenhouse (a couple of shelves in my basement). The city cut down a tree in my front yard a few years ago, and I wanted to put something in that space. I've been on an Instagram stories kick lately because sometimes you want to share something but it doesn't seem as important somehow. Like, you wouldn't mind if it went away in 24 hours. But I was looking back at my older posts on here from before I realized stories were a thing, and I liked the way I tended to post more silly, inconsequential things that were part of my life and thus given importance because I chose to call attention to them. A famous YouTuber who was away from Instagram for a while has returned recently, making over-the-top posts poking fun at how mundane things have become (with comments like, "You can post screenshots of tweets here? who knew?" And "Here's a picture of a mailbox since no one really knows what this platform is for anymore.") But I like that Instagram can be "for" whatever the user wants it to be for. Share glimpses of your life, what's on your mind. Connect with people through our various rectangles of glass. So here's some yarn I fell in love with recently.
