In my upcoming book Real Estate Etiquette, I speak extensively about why and how to navigate through situations. I show examples of real experiences and how we take from those, move ourselves forward, knowing if the route is not effortless, it is not our route. Your journey gives you markers, reflections but most compelling, signs that guide you. Excerpt: “I remember when I worked at this real estate firm years ago. . . In Houston. I brought in this huge account, a global energy account and it was given to the head of a department in which I did not work. I didn’t see a problem. After all, wouldn’t the company funnel the business I brought in, back to me? I trusted the firm but when the leads came in they were disbursed to individuals other than myself. I learned to speak up very early in my career. It was my practice. You do not need to be silence. Be aware and conscious of yourself, was my intuition from an early age. Shortly thereafter, I remember calling a meeting because I had written a business plan for this company, a good one with much thought and planning. I would bring in a multitude of accounts. The meeting, which I called, turned into a meeting of other intentions, an opportunity where those in charge turned away new business. I remember having a conversation shortly thereafter with one of the same individuals, explaining how my design line was carried by Williams Sonoma. Shortly after that, my city’s newspaper called me and wanted to run a story but coincidentally they suddenly changed their mind and didn’t run the story. In fact the woman at the newspaper who was so excited to do the story didn’t even return my calls. Coincidentally, she was friends with one of these individuals I spoke with at the company. In life there are no coincidences. However, it may seem incidents do collide. Consciousness and knowingly are experiences. Awareness is clarity in our own existence, experience and surroundings. Karma is an action that reflects an action. Intention is from the heart. Fear is a belief we are taught. The movie, originally titled “Mother’s Instinct”, demands that both actresses express their gut instincts during their performances, showcasing their true worth. Set during John Fitzgerald Kennedy’s era, presumably in the 1950~60s, the film unfolds a classical story with a well-executed contrast in the end, resulting in a tidy conclusion. With a radical set and human being, the movie effectively portrays human instincts and the dynamics of being backed into a corner.

메이 디셈버 May December | 2024 #maydecembermovie #메이디셈버 굉장히 유혹적이고 살아있는 기분이랄까.. 각자의 위치에서 절제적인 인물들 간 잠재하고 있는, 또한 조금씩 튀어나오는 표출이 있다. 이 영화는 묘한 자극으로 가득 채워져 있다. 인간의 복합적인 감정을 담아내 말 그대로 복잡하다. 단순히 또라이다, 이해가 안 된다 라고 치부해버리기엔 너무 여러가지다. 대사처럼 도덕적 회색 부분 내 여러 컬러가 파스텔하게 담겨있는 것 같다. 그러나 엄청나게 팽창하며.. 세 주연 배우의 색깔이 너무 강해 셋다 똑같이 또렷하다. It was seductive and tangible. There were each timing-differences of the characters and at the same time, an expression what sticked out of their own hard self-control in each positions. This movie is full of some stimulation which was so subtle. And this is literally complicated with containing human being’s complexion. It is so diverse and there are many to dismiss that it’s just a weirdo, or psycho or not being understandable. It is like a grey shadow of an ethic and some pastels are within, like a part of lines, expanding tension gradually. Also, all main characters color so vividly in equal way.

There are obviously parts that are disgusting. However, sometimes I found myself wondering and imagining about whose life contains the purest sight and is maintained in a condition where they have never experienced or learned anything influenced by so-called society’s norms. Not just crawling like a toddler, but being acknowledged as a member of society. This curiosity didn’t run deep for me and I feel like I’ve just been there. Is the world full of conflicts continuously arising from different characteristics? This movie is described as colorful, experimental, and a series of anxieties from beginning to end. I admired Mark’s performance in the scenes, especially, where he danced with Emma and he was in the psychiatric hospital. Also, the rest of the movie is absolutely for Emma Stone. I sensed Margaret’s yearning to act through her choice of this film. And the amazing visual effects and terrific costumes were in there.
바튼 아카데미 The Holdovers | 2024 #바튼아카데미 #theholdoversmovie 문득 장면 하나하나가, 대사 몇줄이 떠오르는 영화가 있다. 바튼 아카데미는 내게 그런 영화가 될 것이란 느낌을 받았다.. 영화는 우선 1970년의 배경으로 빈티지한 색감이 편안함을 준다. 우리는 예기치 않고 의도하지 않았던, 한편으론 강제적인 환경에서 교훈을 얻기도 한다. 그리고 그렇게 얻은 그 교훈은 당시 경험과 기억과 함께 앞으로의 삶을 이해하고 사람을 사랑하는데 큰 영향을 끼치고 행복을 찾을 줄 알게 된다. 적인 줄 알았던 상대가 실은 친구가 되었음을 겪어내는 것은 특히 내가 좋아하는 삶의 한 부분이다. 어쩌면 서로가 닮았음을 단번에 알아채 밀어내고 밀렸던 것이 아닐까. 귀엽고 사랑스러운 영화. 왜 아카데미가 좋아하는지 바로 이해한 영화. There are some movies where certain scenes and lines come to mind suddenly on a daily basis. I bet this is absolutely one of them. This movie has the 1970’ background, all of vintage colors, textures consist of it beautifully, giving a peace for us. We often learn valuable lessons from challenging situations that being pushed forcefully, unpredictably, unintentionally. And the lessons we learn from challenging experiences have a profound influence on our lives, forming our ability to love, understand others, and find happiness afterward. I particularly love the aspect of life where we can understand each other and become friends, even if we initially misunderstand each other as enemies. Sometimes, we unconsciously notice our similarities but then pull away from each other. This film is literally adorable and I could immediately understand why the Oscar loves it.
파묘 Exhuma | 2024 #exhuma #파묘 오랜만에 대작을 봤다. 아구가 맞고 첨예하게 풀어간다. 단순히 망자에 대한 비밀에 초점을 맞추는 것도 아닌, 두려운 뉘앙스만 남발하는 것이 아닌, 어떤 형상이나 풍토를 그려내려고 하는 것만도 아닌, 모사를 하려거나 교훈을 주려고 하는 게 아닌… 영화를 통해 존재하는 인물들의 이야기만에 집중하여 저절로 균형이 맞춰지는 것 같다. 물리쳐야 하는 대상의 양감과 탄생사 역시 예상 밖이었고 기대 이상이었다. 퇴마에 대한 어떤 불쾌감도 잔상도 남지 않고 영화가 주는 묵직한 압도감만이 북소리만큼 은은하게 깔린다. 대작을 입증하는 몰입감이 증명해내는 영화, 무엇보다 배우들이 존재하는 작품이었다. I watched a masterpiece for a while. Everything clicks and the whole story unfolds subtly. You can‘t help but be drawn into every scene. This is not that focusing on a secret for the dead one, not that overusing a nuance for fear, not that description to certain shape or embodying and not that giving a lesson… it just put all endeavor to get focus on the characters’ life of the movie and all elements of it ended up getting along with each other effortlessly. A sense of volume for the subject which should be repelled was unexpected and the background of its birth was beyond what we expected either. Zero lingering discomfort or residual imagery from the exorcism scenes there, only a subtle energy of this movie lies instead like a sound of a drum. Immersion proves this movie as an obvious masterwork ever and above all, actors live in this movie.

플랜 75 Plan 75 | 2024 #plan75movie #플랜75 이미 고령화 사회가 된 지 오래인 일본. 일본에 놀러갈 때마다 일하시는 노인분들을 많이 봤다. 역시 일본, 앞서가는구나 싶은 생각에 그쳤다. 나이가 들면 직업을 잃어가고, 미래에 대해 막연해지는 게 그저 모두에게 해당하는 당연한 일로 여겼는데, 만일 죽을 날을 받아둔 사람마냥 점점 죽음이 가까워지는 현실을 마주한다면 삶에 대한 열의가 생길 수 있을까? 죽음과 가까워진 기분이 고령화로 인해 사회에 팽배해진다고 하더라도 죽음 앞에 의연해질 수 있을까? 미래엔 죽음 역시 상품군으로 분류될 것이라는 소스는 사실 현실인 것이고, 숙제인 것이다. 이 영화는 곧 우리가 느낄 감정을 미리 짐작해본 것 같다. 그나저나, 카와이 유미 배우 부쩍 자주 보네 요즘! 라이징 스타인가? Japan has already become an aging society. I have often witnessed elderly individuals working diligently here and there whenever I visited, and I deeply respect how Japan seems to be preparing well for an aging population. As all of us age and inevitably lose some of our capabilities, we become anxious about our future. It’s a natural part of the universe for sure. But if we guess the date of our death and were simply waiting for it, could we still have passion or enthusiasm for life? If the feeling that we are approaching the death became widespread, could we genuinely face it with blunt and relaxed acceptance? The concept of Plan 75 is explored in this movie, but it poses a challenging assignment for us to confront in reality. This film imagines what we may feel and understand about such matters in the future. By the way, I found Kawai Yumi so often, in the Sayonara, Girls also. Is she a rising?
Ikarie XB 1 is a Czech science fiction film from 1963 said to have inspired 2001 a space odyssey. The film follows the story of a group of astronauts venturing into space in the search for alien life. As a big science fiction fan, I loved this movie but it is admittedly slow and oddly structured. There isn’t much of a central character and the entire thirty minutes is mostly dedicated to exploring the many groups of characters and their dynamics on the space ship. It isn’t until halfway through the film they discover another abandoned space ship from American space men. The film gets interesting here because you can tell from the way the film critiques the other space ship the film is very communist and based in fact by a polish novel from Stanisław Lem. Once this happens the real plot and meat of the film gets into play and the group dynamics on board begin to break down and the film becomes increasingly paranoid and existentialist with its concepts of time dilation and space travel theory. This film isn’t a masterpiece but it is a master class in production design. The ship feels very retro futuristic and advanced at the same time. The cinematography here is also brilliant. There’s a lot of compositional focus on the emphasis of space through the long corridors and large rooms. A lot of the lighting is also really well done within the controlled interiors. Now Whilst on one hand, I wanted some more emotion from this film I still loved this for the concepts and execution and would recommend it.

Was it a waste of talented actors or a kind of friendship or a game whatever? Unfortunately, It was there with still the same foundation, no development, it was just with full of ideas which passed any of development at least. The only different thing than before was CGI, has not been better than, but been different as the word itself. I literally may believe it was only made of ad-lib, hence the only thing I enjoyed was watching actors including Dua Lipa. Let’s let Kingsman there please. …

웡카 Wonka | 2024 #웡카 #wonkamovie 적시에 누군가에게 정말 맛있는 음식이 주어졌을 때, 그 순간이 얼마나 행복한 순간인지 그리고 그 행복한 기분이 하루를 바꿀 만큼 큰 힘이 있는지 “기쁨”을 충실히 표현한 순수한 이야기가 강점이다. 해리포터 제작진이라서 그런지 그럴싸한 마법이었다. 티모시 샬라메의 인터뷰에서 엿볼 수 있던 익살스러움이 캐스팅의 배경이었을까 생각해 보았고, 휴 그랜트의 캐릭터 변신에 대한 용기와 그럼에도 불구하고 안정적인 연기에 감탄했다. 약간 애니메이션이라 하기에도, 드라마라고 하기에도 애매한 힘이 약한 느낌이 있어서 아쉬웠다. When a well-made food, like Wonka Chocolate in the movie, is promptly given to someone in desperation, the moment becomes incredibly amazing and holds the power to change one’s day. This story beautifully captures the pure essence of joy, making it the focal point of the movie. The magical touch, reminiscent of the Harry Potter production team, is evidence throughout. I believe Timothee’s sense of humour, as showcased in interviews, played a role in his casting. I also commend Hugh Grant for venturing into a new character and admire his impeccable acting skills. However, it feels somewhat light to categorize this as merely Drama or Animation.
I watched Last Year of Marienbad which is about a man at a party trying to convince a woman that he had an affair with her but she may or may not remember. And to some degree, I get it. It’s an allegory for Schrödinger’s cat and the metaphysics of knowing versus not knowing, the nature of memory with it’s fallacies, epistemology, and the nature of being versus not being, and so forth and so on. I unfortunately feel like a lot of the themes and ideas in this film would have also all been translated and executed better if the film had actual discernible characters with goals. In this film I just feel like the movie just repeats the same information and ideas and character statements and themes over and over again like the sound of a constructions workers drill preventing you from falling asleep as you’re forced to listen through the protagonists ramblings about emotionless jibber jabber. I think it sucks how much of this movie is just told from the man’s perspective with the women mostly just responding no and no to his inquiries which for the record are just about almost constant monologues about his experience with his very subjective memories. This film had the opportunity to be a masterpiece if it had explored more of a back and forth dynamic where he offers his opinions on his memory and she retorts with her own interpretations of them, perhaps even showing more of her own memories but instead this film focuses almost exclusively on its themes and it’s male protagonist. At the end of the film you know almost just as little about the characters as when the film started. I’m gonna be honest because I think this is one of the most repugnant and boring movies ever made. It treats itself like complex high art but it has no emotion or soul to give to its depth. Overall the main problem with this film is how much time it spends philosophizing about the metaphysics of this possible relationship but never giving you any actual reason to care about it. I might recommend it for its “artistic value” but never for enjoyment.
소녀는 졸업하지 않는다 Sayonara, Girls | 2024 #소녀는졸업하지않는다 #sayonaragirlsmovie 감독의 데뷔작인 만큼 날것의 연기와 날것의 연출이 느껴진다. 풍경도 일본의 분위기도 제대로 담겨서 일본을 느끼기에 좋다. 주인공 네명의 이야기는 서로 연관은 없지만, 같은 학교 안에서 각자의 고등학교 3년의 진지한 마음이 담겨있다. 학교생활 3년이 얼만큼 긴 시간이고, 어쩌면 나를 무너지게도 하는 개인의 세상이었던 시간이었음을 나도 한번 돌이켜 볼 수 있었다. The performances and direction were somewhat raw. Simultaneously, I believe this is the director’s debut. Every scene makes me feel the authenticity of Japan. All of main characters have no connection each other, except for being in the same high school. It reflects their sincerity towards to their school life. I can remind of my school days, recalling how it seemed like an extensive world for an individual, substantial enough to lead one astray.

A Brighter Summer Day (1991)
덤 머니 Dumb Money | 2024 #dumbmoneymovie #덤머니 소셜 네트워크 제작진이라고 하니 바로 영화의 결이 이해가 됐다. 당시에 혼란스러웠던 사실을 알기 쉽게 풀어내어 전혀 어렵지 않고, 추억을 회상하듯 여유가 있다. 캐스팅이 조화롭게 잘 되었고, 알쓸신잡 같은 유익한 채널을 한편 본 기분이랄까? 아울러 인간은 고독 속에서 길러져야 한다는 한 줄이 생각났다. I understand the connection to this movie after learning that it shares the same production team as “Social Network.” It is not hard at all to follow with easy going based on a true story which is even a chaos at that time for sure. Thus thanks to it, someone can remind of another memory. The whole cast exhibits excellent chemistry, enhancing the overall viewing experience. They were each of their characters as themselves portraying as if it were an extension of themselves. And It feels akin to watching an insightful YouTube channel that delves into cultural aspects. Plus, one sentence came to me that people have to be surrounded by a solitude, absolutely to reach at their own dream or make their dream real.
Abbel Ferrara’s rape revenge thriller Ms. 45. Is compelling thematically but it leaves me feeling cold and detached. The protagonist character herself is interesting and the moral dilemma she faces of murdering men on the streets after being raped is interesting but I find that the way the narrative frames the story to be very uninteresting. On one hand the way the rape scenes are filmed held a surprising amount of restraint especially from a filmmaker as edgy and “exploitative” as Ferrara, but on the other hand I found the way the protagonist was written to be far more controversial. It’s hard to emotionally connect with a character when we know nothing about her really other than her rape. She is defined only by her rape in my opinion and because she is a mute we learn almost nothing else about her personality. Even when she is clearly shown to be facing interesting moral dilemmas internally we never actually learn much of anything else about her. Despite Ferrara’s prowess in creating a stylish film with a mute protagonist I think he could have given his protagonist at least an internal monologue or spent more time fleshing out who she was through either a diary or more character interactions with more of her friends. Ultimately, there are interesting ideas here about feminist justice and how the morality of revenge can get taken out of hand but they simply aren’t given enough context through the protagonists thoughts/actions to fully gel together.

Swing Girls (2004) tells the story of a group of lazy foolish school girls who accidentally poison their brass band. Their punishment is to be forced into joining the same band despite having no musical experience. Before the end of the first act, they are forced out by actual musicians. The lazy and slightly selfish protagonist eventually decides to work enough money up to buy musical equipment for her and friends. Soon her friends join in. Swing Girls is such a beautiful movie thematically because it focuses on people who have no initial passion for art who decide despite their inexperience to work towards mastering the art form of their instruments despite societal pressures. There’s a really charming sense of whimsy and slapstick hi-jinx in this movie. It almost operates like an anime with the level of silliness this movie operates on with fake music teachers, comical falls, wacky situations, goofball side characters, and even goofier endings. But still the level of dedication this films takes in giving almost all of its many characters broad yet defined arcs is admirable. I’m left in awe by the level of passion each character has and the amount of passion that the film ultimately ends with. I do think the film could have been more polished structurally but with a film as delightful as this I don’t have much to complain about and I couldn’t recommend it enough.
Whiplash isn’t a bad movie per say, but I can’t say I even enjoyed it much really. It seems the general consensus for this is that it’s either one of the best movies of the 2010’s or one of the most overrated. Unfortunately my opinion leans toward the latter. The film tells the story of an aspiring drummer practicing under his new ruthless teacher. The central conflict of the film is Andrew’s desire to be a better drummer even though his teacher is cruel. However what I find most interesting about this movie is I don’t actually think it has ANY internal conflict like AT ALL. He never sees his teacher as cruel ironically enough. He sees the teaching methods as necessary and succumbs to his every demand. It’s obvious to me the protagonist has no desire to change his external goal making the whole character feel as flat as board. The most interesting parts of the movie are the ones with the least depth. Andrew talks down to his family even though his father loves him but I still think this film needed more of a subplot with his father. This film also has a subplot where Andrew asks a girl out but he doesn’t even pursue a relationship with her. I understand that this is the point but the story drops the subplot so quickly that it feels null. Considering the fact Andrew seems so narcissistic I just wished the film could have explored some toxic relationships. It doesn’t help to write a flat character and under develop the only side characters your protagonist has an impact on and that’s what left me thinking as the movie ended. This movie has beautiful cinematography and incredible editing but i couldn’t actually care about it in the end. ENDING SPOILERS In the ultimate end of the film Andrew succumbs to the wishes of his teacher. But does he really have an arc if that was his goal all along? Andrew and his teacher act as foils for each other as narcissist doppelgängers but their internal conflict never changes. People leave this film asking if Andrew won or lost? This is a dumb to me because Andrew wouldn’t even care if he lost the people in his life to begin with. The ending of Whiplash tries to convince you it matters when in fact it doesn’t.

HitchCock’s Shadow of A Doubt might be my favorite Hitchcock film. The film tells the story of a bored teen during a depressive slump who is visited by her uncle, both named Charlie. The audience knows the uncle is a wanted criminal and serial murderer but our protagonist and her family does not. Almost the entirety of the film takes place within a family household. It’s really fascinating to watch a director like Hitchcock who usually relies on exciting set pieces tell a story confined to mostly one house but still rely on all his other tropes. It allows for all of this tension to steep into the film. The protagonist who adores her uncle eventually grows to find him suspicious and as the film evolves learns more about him and his past developing a tense conflict between the two. However the subtext of the film is the real interesting meat. This is almost an inverse Rear Window where the investigation and voyeurism comes from the outside looking inward as opposed to the other way around when the police are introduced during the midpoint of the film. Is it ethical to investigate a family and lie? Then as the protagonist learns more she is conflicted. Her family loves her uncle so much and she must decide whether safety and truth is more important than happiness. The ethics of investigation grow increasingly more complicated. How far would you go for family or justice and are you willing to make sacrifices to your morality? I also wanna add It helps that this film has two female screenwriters because it’s protagonist is an amazing feminist character. She is conflicted by her duty as a woman to keep peace in the family and to also marry someone she loves while still keeping face. Her uncle who is the evil mirror version of her secretly loathes women, widows specifically. The ending of Shadow of A Doubt gives agency and power to its main character but is still a depressing reminder of womanhood and false appearances of the nuclear family and suburban normalcy. “You go through your ordinary little day, and at night you sleep your untroubled ordinary little sleep, filled with peaceful stupid dreams. And I brought you nightmares.”

리브 더 월드 비하인드 Leave The World Behind | 2023 #리브더월드비하인드 #leavetheworldbehindmovie 미스터리란 장르에 잘 맞게 신비로움이 부담스럽지 않게 이어진다. 미국인들의 생각과 시선을 날 것의 상태로 전달한다. 요즘 세상을 세련되게 반영해두어 고급스러운 풍자도 느낄 수 있다. 인간의 연약함과 투명하게 읽히는 삶의 패턴을 최종적으로 가리키고 있어 더 세련되게 느껴진 멋스러운 영화. 배우들의 내공은 첫씬에서부터 바로 우릴 흡입한다. 무조건 한번 더 볼 것이고.. 중간 중간 구멍이 나 있는 것 같은 생략과 메타포로 이렇게 강렬하고 이따금씩 공명이 울리게 할 수 있다니 감탄스럽다. .. 한국인으로서 약간 굴욕적인 점 주의.. A mysterious vibe continues lightly during entire running time. And it translated to us the American’s raw thoughts and sights for the world. We can get a sense of a posh satire on the modern society, which is well-reflected to the film. We can ultimately reach a hidden intention that weakness of people, a transparent pattern of people’s life through this movie. And, the great seasoned actors immediately overwhelmed us by their performances from the beginning. It is so amazing that it can make this linger with me even though the storyline has been composed of omissions here and there as for some metaphors, and I will definitely go for another. Plus, Korean needs to care that Korean has been describing disgracefully.
