The sacrifices I made for my PT degree were immense. Eight years of grueling studies, facing unimaginable hardships like losing my mom to cancer and battling through motherhood amidst it all. Araqa started with the intention of empowering communities living in a post-conflict setting through various forms of art. Alongside our creative workshops we also offer psychological workshops. Our participants face a number of diverse challenges and mental health support is an important tool alongside creative expression. Our Psychologist and Social Worker Faten leads engaging psychological support workshops for the youth involved in our projects. She has been implementing strategies to alleviate anxiety and enhance overall mental well-being. She helps to foster a supportive environment conducive to emotional growth and resilience. Our center 🏠🌴🤍💫 When you enter this space you feel the good atmosphere straight away. For a few hours you can leave behind the worries, difficulties, and sometimes even dangers, of life and be supported by a community. The last few months have been heavy: Syrian refugees confronted with the danger of being forcibly returned to their home country, the ethnic cleansing in Palestine and the war affecting Lebanon. When faced with this inhumanity it can cause us to despair and so gathering together is more important than ever. This sense of community reminds us that safety is a human right and is something which should be achievable for all. Psychological support workshops ✨🤍 Life can be extremely tough for our students, especially mentally. For a few weeks in the spring, we were grateful to welcome Rayan, who came to give a series of workshops discussing psychology & mental wellness, 💓✨ as well as its intersections with political realities and philosophy to give students a clearer idea of different reactions and behaviours of individuals and collectives. Our students benefitted massively from his workshops!✨🫶 The discussions focused on topics such as power within social institutions, cycles of abuse, violence and manipulation as well as psychological and political alienation and resilience. The workshops encouraged students to engage with their own beliefs, values and emotional struggles in order to grow as people themselves. 🌼 من الممكن جداً أن تكون الحياة صعبة للغاية بالنسبة طلابنا، خاصة على الصعيد النفسي. لبضعة أسابيع في الربيع الماضي، كنا ممتنين لحضور ريان، الذي جاء لتقديم سلسلة من ورش العمل التي تناقش علم النفس والصحة النفسية ، بالإضافة إلى تداخلاتها مع الحقائق السياسية والفلسفة لإعطاء الطلاب فكرة أوضح عن ردود الفعل المختلفة وسلوكيات الأفراد والجماعات. استفاد طلابنا بشكل كبير من ورش العمل هذه! We are happy to announce that after a three month break’ The voices of Bekaa’ project has started again. 🤍 Living conditions during the winter months are tough in Bekaa and more often than not our students are required to gather resources and concentrate on basic needs. During this break though things are still happening, students are working independently and applying skills previously learned whilst our dedicated team are only a message away, ensuring a smooth, supported, progress focussed journey! Join us to celebrate the end of an amazing year at Tools for Inner Peace. We are a tiny charity with a big impact. These are some of the things we have done this year to support the mental health and wellbeing of people on three continents: Lebanon: - Ongoing training for 20 community yoga teachers to reach some of Lebanon’s poorest and most marginalised communities, including Syrian and Palestinian refugees and Beirut’s vulnerable LGBTQ community. - Training of 30 facilitators in Yoga, Songs and Games, our methodology for bringing yoga to children, with 200 children already reaping the benefits. - Weekly Yoga & English classes for 25 refugee teenagers. Sierra Leone: - Weekly yoga sessions reaching 60 homeless street youth in Freetown, followed by a warm, nutritious meal, and monthly visits by a nurse. - 10 retreat days in June with 15 yoga teacher trainees from across Sierra Leone, alongside biweekly online classes to support their learning. Europe and UK: - Yoga for Trauma workshops for Ukrainian refugees and their supporters in Finland, and for trauma survivors in the UK. - Weekly refugee yoga classes in the UK, both in person and online, reaching asylum seekers and refugees from around the world, including Afghanistan, Iran, Sudan, Syria and Ukraine. Samuel grew up during the Sierra Leonean civil war (1991-2002) which ended only two decades ago. He became a refugee in neighboring Liberia after the war took his family. Looking back, he says, “Life was a real challenge.” One day, a friend was giving free yoga classes at a public beach in Freetown; he joined and has been one of our most motivated and dedicated teacher trainees ever since. He says that yoga has been life-changing. “Before I used to practice yoga, I used to always be angry. I had Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and used to be all over the place. I used to argue a lot – always wanted to win. What changed most with yoga is that I’m able to control my emotions. I came to realize life is not a race. It’s not a competition. It’s not about beating someone up. It’s about being you. Today, I practice yoga every day.” Against all odds Samuel decided to go back to school. Today, he is both a father to his son and a self-sponsored university student, pursuing a B.Sc. degree in Public Sector Management. Samuel is also part of our ‘From the community, for the community’ initiative in teaching yoga. He lived through some of the most challenging circumstances of our times, overcame them and is now actively engaged in giving back to the Sierra Leonean people. He says, “When I teach, I feel the excitement of my students. They would say: You are a blessing to us! Last week we helped stock more pads at the @justactionsamos Free Market. We love working with Just Action. The camp is far from the city so they cover the cost of bus ticket for camp residents to come shop and get the things they need. We recently did a Q&A with Just Action Samos and here an except: “On Samos there is widespread period poverty. After learning the alphabet at our Centre, she is now reading and writing in English. 📚 Ahlam is especially interested in learning English so she can navigate her daily life in Greece. Topics covered include subjects important to life in Athens, including finding housing. 🏠 "I want to live in the English language and also learn it for my children. Without the English language, you don't see or hear." Ahlam's English lessons are tailored for her specific goals- that's why we have introduced computer literacy into her English classes at our Centre. Thanks to everyone who supported us this Giving Tuesday! We think we raised about £500 for the double donations fundraiser which is amazing!! The Free Shop can access their double funds in January and we'll be spending them right away on food packs and underwear and warm kids clothes. We also tested for the first-time a collaboration with other charities on the theme of #morethansurvival . This one-day campaign concept is still a work in progress, we just wanted to test out something new in fundraising for @givingtuesday . We’re distributing menstrual hygiene kits in Costa Rica! We teamed up with our good friends @humanitarianactionorg and @alianzavencr to distribute pads, wipes, pain reliever, and soap for Venezuelan migrants and asylum seekers in Costa Rica. As Marisela told us in our IG Live last week, period products are one of the first things that are requested from Venezuelans making their journey. Meet student Ahmad Sweid, 19 🤍 ✨More than survival is helping others make art.✨ “With photography you can tell a lot through one picture. I like going to the class, to develop as a photographer, but also to enjoy the social side - I loved the atmosphere. It was always great and the teachers were always cheerful! I’m a volunteer in a local refugee camp community in the Bekaa Valley of Lebanon. I attended secondary school up until 9th grade but was then forced to quit my education in order to help my family and local community to survive our everyday lives. Now I dedicate my time to providing a safe environment at the camp for the kids so they can grow intellectually and emotionally. Der dritte Teil unserer Arbeit besteht im direkten Austausch mit Politiker*innen zu aktuellen Herausforderungen und Lösungsansätzen. Unser Ziel ist, auf diese Weise gegenseitiges Verständnis zu fördern und mehr Politiker*innen zu einem aktiven Einsatz für die Rechte von geflüchteten Menschen und deren Aufnahme zu bewegen. Their smiles are thanks enough! Today is Giving Tuesday, an international donation day conceived to help soften the harsh winter for people in need. This year, we joined around 30 humanitarian organisations under the umbrella ‘More than Survival’ to go beyond meeting the basics of food and shelter for refugees. Our goal is to enable survivors of war to take their healing into their own hands through yoga, so they can go on to live full lives despite past trauma. By training yoga facilitators for children and adults, from marginalized communities for marginalized communities, we’re looking to spread some light and positivity from within.
