Today it's 60 years anniversary of the opening of the 1964 World's Fair in Flushing Meadows! Excerpt from Modern New York: (..)The largest, tallest, and most fun was the NEW YORK STATE PAVILION by Philip Johnson, Richard Foster, and engineer Lev Zetlin. The pavilion’s main section was the elliptical Tent of Tomorrow, which was covered by a multicolored translucent roof suspended from 100-foot columns. The Texaco New York State paper map was recreated in colorful terrazzo paving. The map captured the spirit and dynamism of the age and was one of the first large-scale pieces of public Pop Art. Another fair structure that still stands is the PORT AUTHORITY BUILDING (now Terrace on the Park). It had a heliport on its roof where choppers brought fair attendees from local airports as well as Manhattan. Below the landing deck was a thousand-seat restaurant with an expansive view of Queens. The building now survives as a catering hall. (..) Overall visitor numbers were low, due in part to high prices and because out-of-towners might have been frightened by the widely publicized Harlem Race Riot of 1964. Also, with the world coming closer because of air and automobile travel—not to mention the popularity of television—there might have been a feeling that fairs like these were antiquated, and the event was the last of its kind, in New York City at least. A record crowd of 446,953 showed up for the closing day, which turned into a frenzied hunt for souvenirs. Elegant ladies dug up flowers and carried them away in their hats. FELIX THE CAT: (excerpt from Modern New York) @macys department store first organized its iconic Thanksgiving parade in 1924 with elephants, bears, and monkeys on loan from the Central Park Zoo. The unruly animals were replaced by slightly more controllable balloons three years later, which were then “released into the wild” at the parade’s end. Macy’s would offer cash to anyone who could hunt them down and return them to the store. Felix the Cat, the first character balloon, went out with a bang when it landed on electric wires and caught fire. La fachada se diseñó con moldes de impresión en 3D, lo que redujo significativamente el desperdicio, la energía, los recursos y el tiempo de construcción. Lantern House, Chelsea, Westside of Manhattan: One of the weirdest yet oddly appealing buildings in New York. Each resident, I imagine, is an apothecary specimen suspended in formaldehyde. She made five portraits of the artist—three charcoal drawings, and two pastels. O’Keeffe and Delaney had a connection through Alfred Stieglitz. Delaney first entered the rarified circle of the foremost American Modernists in New York during the 1930s. Spending time at Stieglitz’s gallery, An American Place, Delaney participated in critical discourse with other artists, including Arthur Dove, John Marin and Georgia O’Keeffe. The Knoxville, Tennessee born artist lived in Boston before heading to New York in 1929. The Harlem Renaissance was in full swing and the Depression was beginning to take hold. An active figure uptown and downtown, after more than two decades in the city, Delaney moved to Paris in 1953. There he became close with James Baldwin, a regular subject of his portraits. Settling in the Left Bank neighborhood of Montparnasse, an artists’ enclave, Delaney, like Baldwin, relished a sense of freedom as a gay black man that he did not have in the United States. Delaney was particularly impressed by O’Keeffe’s work, which he described as ‘alive and quite amazing.’ O’Keeffe, in turn, deeply respected Delaney’s painting and wrote a tribute to him in the catalogue for his 1973 solo exhibition at Darthea Speyer’s gallery in Paris.
