"Growing up in the rural Pacific Northwest, I was raised and shaped by nature. The redwood forest was my playground, my teacher and my comfort. I wouldn’t trade it for the world. But, femininity didn’t come naturally. There were few role models of women who presented themselves as feminine growing up. Women were expected to be low maintenance and capable, and I eventually came to associate femininity with “high maintenance” and “pretentious”. Add to that, independence and self-reliance were drilled into me since birth. To never rely on a man, to handle anything, to be responsible, reliable, to always persevere no matter what life threw at me. There came a point in my life, about 10 years ago, that I realized that I didn’t need to always be strong. That it was ok to be vulnerable. It was ok to ask for help. I realized that I could still be all the things I was raised to be, while also being soft and feminine. I realized that I can be independent AND be ok with having a partner that wants to help take care of me. So when I turned 45 earlier this year, I decided a photo shoot with Jenn would be the perfect way to honor and embrace these two parts of me that have been juxtaposed for so long. Through this photo shoot and Jenn’s amazing vision, she was able to help me honor and embrace the more feminine parts of me. What can I say, a photo shoot with Jenn is an experience. Everything from the choosing from her incredible collection of outfits, to getting glammed up by the amazing hair & makeup artist, Katrina, to the shoot itself, where Jenn just worked her magic. When the photos were revealed a few weeks later, I was so excited to see that she captured everything I had hoped for.
