Watched #TheCatAndTheCanary (1927) : A true pioneer of "Bees Saal Baad" term. They cheated us with a horror formula, only to give a chilling suspense thriller. Paul Leni took a 1922 black-comedy play, removed comedy a bit, I guess, and served us a suspense thriller with instant effects. So, the film begins with the "20 years later" term, which I know as "Bees Saal Baad" in my country (Hindi translation used in many horror movies). Cyrus West's will is going to be revealed 20 years after his death as his relatives come together in the mansion. Now, this is where I thought, "Was #KnivesOut copied from here?" No, I was wrong. There was something else ahead, but somehow it was distantly close to what the main essence of Knives Out deals with. Now that's my perspective; you can differ. So, Annabelle gets the fortune, but there's a peculiar yet metaphorical condition to it: she has to prove her sanity before a doctor. This is how West took me to the #Saw zone, where the jigsaw wanted others to "feel what he felt". A very nice metaphor. "Now, you are like your uncle.. in a cage surrounded by cats." Another well-written subtext. As we go ahead, we see a ghost and a lot of weird things happening on the same night under the same roof. That's what you call a chaotic mess, but a smart one. While things start looking like horror, we get a sweet twist in the end to prove the suspense well worth it. Be it the play or the movie, they have given us a trick of all time that has been used for years and is being used even today. Laura La Plante and Creighton Hale's performances stand out amongst others, while Forrest Stanley tops the list by the end because of transformation and a twist. Known for German expressionism, Paul Leni was quite effective as the director of an American silent feature. The idea is to fool the audience with a carrot of ghost/horror and shape your suspense thriller on the other side when no one's looking. A great work, indeed, before "Old Dark House". 365 Reviews a Year 2022 #300 - The Cat and the Canary (1927) Based on the 1922 play by John Willard, 'The Cat and the Canary' is a silent comedic horror film starring Laura La Plante and Creighton Hale. The play was well-known and was filmed three more times, most famously in 1939 with Paulette Goddard and Bob Hope. Unlike the later film, this one is very much a drama, played straight with comedy sprinkled throughout. The story centers on Annabelle (La Plante), who is called to the estate of her deceased uncle, along with several other family members, for the reading of his will. She is named his heir, but only if she is proven to be sane. Mysterious goings-on and disappearances push Annabelle to the limit, but she finds support in her cousin, Paul (Hale). Her aunt Susan (Flora Finch) and other cousins, Charles (Forrest Stanley), Harry (Arthur Edmund Carewe) and Cecily (Gertrude Aster) are unsure of her mental state. Also on hand are the lawyer, Crosby (Tully Marshall), the first to disappear, and the mysterious housekeeper, Mammy Pleasant (Martha Mattox). It is unsurprising that this story would be told so often. It has all the elements of a good yarn: a mystery, the supernatural, melodrama, comedy, romance... Director Paul Leni knew how to use his German Expressionism to dramatic effect and balance the other aspects without making it incomprehensible. The only big drawback to the film is some of the cast. La Plante is wonderful and appealing as Annabelle, convincingly portraying her distress, and Mattox is very creepy as the housekeeper (thankfully devoid of the original production's blackface). But most are kind of bland, particularly Hale, who has his moments, but one can see why an actor like Bob Hope is needed for a role like that. Not everyone can balance comedy, horror and romance convincingly. It's still a great film, even if it doesn't play as strongly today as its 1939 remake. It has a lot of style, well-drawn characters, a good story and a decent balance of horror and humor. My beloved misery guts #EilyMalyon in her first film role in Born To Love (1931). Well this one certainly fulfilled my sick perversion for old ladies in old films ( #LouiseClosserHale, #MargaretMann, #TempePigott, etc), and as great as this film is, it gets extremely dark and depressing. I seriously couldn’t believe how dark this went. Anyway, #ConstanceBennett and #JoelMcCrea get it on during WW1 in London. He leaves her to fight and is subsequently killed. She is left pregnant, but marries wealthy #PaulCavanagh who raises the child as his own.
