The Lyman Woodard Organization - Saturday Night Special | 1975 Holy grail alert 💣 To be honest I never thought I would own an original copy of this record right here! Possibly the best known of Strata’s releases, The Lyman Woodard Organization’s ‘Saturday Night Special’ is rightly heralded as a jazz fusion classic. Recorded in 1975, ‘Saturday Night Special’ features organ, electric piano and Mellotron by bandleader Lyman Woodard alongside guitar and bass by Ron English, with drums and percussion by Leonard King, Bud Spangler & Lorenzo “Mr. Rhythm” Brown respectively. Despite the fairly sparse instrumentation, ‘Saturday Night Special’ lays down an impressive wall of sound, powerfully atmospheric in its almost low-fi aesthetic. Hinting at more traditional jazz, rhythm & blues, afrocuban styles and more, the uniqueness of this album is surely in its feel: summoning up images of a vast industrial landscape, assembly lines and urban decay. In other words, this record sounds like Detroit. No great album artwork is complete without a good story to match, and ‘Saturday Night Special’ does not disappoint. Snapped by photographer and political activist Leni Sinclair (responsible for seminal pictures of Miles Davis, Fela Kuti and John Coltrane and many others), the cover image shows the contents of Lyman Woodard’s pockets placed on the hotel bed after a show: cigarette papers, cash and a pistol. It’s a flaming hot affair front to back but my favorite track off here gotta be the rare groove classic “Creative Musicans”, it’s just perfect! The themes of this album depict the struggles of Detroit at the time, alongside beautiful compositions. It’s a real duality, beauty in darkness. Lyman Woodard is incredible on keys, he played with Dennis Coffey and 8th day, amazing player. Ron English on guitar, who had his own strata release as you can see on the back cover, but it remained unreleased until 2015. I just have to laugh when I look at this one. I remember back in the day thinking..oh cool, this label (Strata) sounds great, there’s not that many of them, I’ll just get em’ all. WRONG. I think I’m still like at two 😂 many years later. While there’s so much I love about this recording; the legendary cover, Detroit label, Detroit musicians, the writing and playing, along with the rarity. I’ve always felt this one could greatly benefit from a better mix. Just sounds off and unbalanced to me. Bums me out cause there’s so much fire going on I feel some of it goes unnoticed. Don’t get me wrong..there’s still definitely some highlights. Being a fan of guitarist Ron English I enjoy his playing on “Creative Musicians” as well as his original composition “On Your Mind”. The Lyman Woodard Organization—Saturday Night Special (Strata, US, 1975) Upgrade alert: I recently added a minty copy this stone-cold Detroit jazz-funk classic to my collection. Saturday Night Special doesn’t need much of an introduction, if my Instagram feed is any indication—seems like just about every copy that was pressed has ended up on here sooner or later. A cult classic that has become a little more widely known in recent years. and I can see why: it’s hard to get enough of this record. The sound is a unique blend of head-nodding soul, spacey jazz-funk, and Motown dance-floor rhythm and blues, with a little bit of Latin jazz grooves thrown in. The production is pretty muddy, but that lo-fi feel adds to this record’s charm, in my opinion, cloaking the grooves in moody atmospherics and conjuring images of industry and decay. Woodard helped define the Motor City’s jazz-funk and fusion heritage.
I’ve been a bit remiss at posting records I’ve bought recently. I don’t recall seeing this one posted on IG. I bought it on spec after looking at the line ups and the track listing. Yesterday I purchased the record collection of Charles English. Charles is a legendary Detroit DJ and the importance of his collection is not lost on me. It was an honor to even view his massive library of LPs and 45s, let alone purchase it. @eddiebaranek, my friend of 25 years and Charles’ next door neighbor of 20+ years, contacted me a few weeks ago to let me know that Mercedes (Charles’ partner of 37 years) was interested in selling the collection. Eddie volunteered my name as a potential buyer and the two of us went to meet with Mercedes and peruse the records. She and I spoke about Charles’ legacy, the significance of his nights at Todd’s and his far-reaching influence on Detroit nightlife. I made her an offer which she accepted. I’m writing this because I have a deep reverence for Charles and I’m aware of what a privilege it is to own his collection. The party I’ve thrown for the past 13 years is undeniably indebted to and directly inspired by Charles and his nights at Todd’s. His style and selections are ingrained in what I do as a DJ and what Joe and I do at @happy_endings_party. Charles’ impact on Detroit club culture still resonates today and will continue to do so through his own records which I and other DJs can now resume playing. Insanely cool release alert! 🚨 You can hear the first single off this release, "Déjà Vu" from the Lyman Woodard Organization, as the first track on my September Spotify playlist - and it's ridiculously good. There's so much great Detroit jazz-ness on this "Detroit Artists Workshop" compilation, I'm beside myself with anticipation to hear the whole thing. In my early 20s, I remember seeing John Sinclair pop by to sit in and do some spoken word on various occasions when I would see Thornetta Davis at the Music Menu in Greektown during her Wednesday night residency. I had the great fortune to also see Donald Byrd and Teddy Harris at Baker's Keyboard Lounge, and Ron English and Lyman Woodard at the Detroit Jazz Festival and elsewhere around town. The legendary Bennie Maupin, who played on Miles Davis' "Bitches Brew" and Lee Morgan's "Live at the Lighthouse," lives in LA now, but is originally from Detroit. I don't think I ever got to see Charles Moore, but he was a co-founder of Strata Records and played with Yusef Lateef. SEPTEMBER 2022 PLAYLIST: ART & MUSIC. I'll just come out and say there's a lot of really good music in this month's playlist. I'm going to do a whole separate post just about the first tune from the Lyman Woodard Organization, culled from the John Sinclair archives (!!!). Tears For Fears makes a rare appearance due to a recent, and first time, viewing of "Donnie Darko." I've become a bit obsessed of late with the newly discovered music of music of Ernest Hood and Charles Stepney. Sudan Archives on Stones Throw Records gives a jolt of actually NEW music, which I find myself coming back to again and again on car rides. Thanks to Rob Theakston for the Foreign Exchange tip by way of a recent post. Lots of Numero Group appearances, as per usual, given the fact that they're the preeminent label of random and obscure great finds. I don't know how I missed Joshua Redman doing Led Zeppelin's "The Crunge," but I'm so glad I came across it. Brian Blade doing John Bonham, whoa! Tons of other goodies mixed in throughout, of course with a Pharoah Sanders tune toward the end to remind us that "Love Is Everywhere." Thanks for listening. "Rocks In My Head" NOW PLAYING: Various Artists - "Paint It Black" (Harmless: U.K. CD) THE BACKSTORY: Lamont Dozier Tribute (Part 4): Written by Holland/Dozier/Holland, "Rocks In My Head" is performed by The 8th Day and originally appeared on the group's 1973 Invictus album "I Gotta Get Home (Can't Let My Baby Get Lonely)". Via liner notes: "The 8th Day was a Detroit, Michigan group assembled by the songwriting team of Brian Holland, Lamont Dozier and Eddie Holland, who had left Motown Records in order to set up their own record label named Invictus. One of artists signed to their label named 100 Proof Aged In Soul had recorded a potential hit single titled "She's Not Just Another Woman", but didn't want to release it under their own name; thus, their name was changed to The 8th Day. When the single was a hit as expected, the Holland/Dozier/Holland partnership assembled the group from various local Detroit solo artists including singer Melvin Davis and former Motown arranger/organist Lyman Woodard. Let’s just call this one the younger sibling to Lyman’s massive Strata release “Saturday Night Special”. Maybe it doesn’t get all the attention of the first born, but this one stands up just fine against the elder. Four years age difference between the two, so there is some late 70’s popular to the times attempts in the songwriting in the way of disco on two tracks, but the other three tracks make up for the trending sounds. “Don’t Stop the Groove” is a massive old school in the pocket funk tune, especially about 3 min in when the solo’s kick in.”Down Lowe” and “Djarum” keep the pace as far as groove goes too. Put out this time on Lyman’s own label Corridor Records 1979. I mean...this is the one. “This”...is the one. If your talkin Dennis Coffey albums, this is the “one”. Not even close. Dennis’s first solo release from 1969 put out on the small and short lived (two years) Maverick Records. Raw and funky at its finest. Legendary Detroit musicians helping out too; Lyman Woodard/Organ, Bob Babbitt and Tony Newton/Bass, Melvin Davis,Andrew Smith/Drums. If lo-fi is your thing, the opening track “Let the Sunshine” will immediately let you know this is a keeper. Drum breaks, fuzz/over driven guitar, Hammond organ, thick bass grooves. All represented. Quite the departure from DC’s day gig of playing guitar on the slick polished hits of the day over at Hitsville for Motown. If your interested in learning more of the career and life path of Dennis, he put out a great book titled “Guitars,Bars, and Motown Superstars”.
