As many of you know, @jawisniewski and I have thrown this party for over 13 years. While there have been a number of venue changes, we've tried to keep the quality consistent. That said, location is important to the overall vibe of a dance party. Once again we find ourselves at the beginning of a new chapter in the Happy Endings story and I can honestly say that this time it feels different. On Saturday, Feb 25th we make the move to a new and exciting space – Eastern Palace Club (@epc_hp). There are far too many positive aspects about this venue to fit in this post but atmosphere, sound, seating, and parking immediately come to mind. The bottom line is that Happy Endings is getting an upgrade. We're honored to be the first dance party at EPC and look forward to officially calling it home. Change is good, right? Onwards and upwards ♥️. Bonus reason to celebrate this debut at EPC is that it marks the return of my friend and DJ partner, Joe Wisniewski! Joe was struck by a car in November and suffered serious injuries. Thankfully he is on the mend and returning to the decks this Saturday! Yesterday I purchased the record collection of Charles English. Charles is a legendary Detroit DJ and the importance of his collection is not lost on me. It was an honor to even view his massive library of LPs and 45s, let alone purchase it. @eddiebaranek, my friend of 25 years and Charles’ next door neighbor of 20+ years, contacted me a few weeks ago to let me know that Mercedes (Charles’ partner of 37 years) was interested in selling the collection. Eddie volunteered my name as a potential buyer and the two of us went to meet with Mercedes and peruse the records. She and I spoke about Charles’ legacy, the significance of his nights at Todd’s and his far-reaching influence on Detroit nightlife. I made her an offer which she accepted. I’m writing this because I have a deep reverence for Charles and I’m aware of what a privilege it is to own his collection. The party I’ve thrown for the past 13 years is undeniably indebted to and directly inspired by Charles and his nights at Todd’s. His style and selections are ingrained in what I do as a DJ and what Joe and I do at @happy_endings_party. Charles’ impact on Detroit club culture still resonates today and will continue to do so through his own records which I and other DJs can now resume playing. It's impossible to measure the influence Charles English had on Detroit culture in the 1980s (and beyond) He provided the soundtrack of my youth and helped to foster a cultural curiosity I carry to this day. A community sprang forth in the dance halls he held court in, where we spun round (like a record baby, right round, round, round). We support each other still today. I truly was lucky to be in the right place at the right time. I've got a lot of feelings right now I can't really articulate. My heart absolutely breaks for Mercedes and all that were closest to Charles. Be kind to one another and put on a record and remember a time when you were young, where the future was unwritten and full of possibilities.
