Dreaming for inspiration. Do you ever lie down to dream intentionally for inspiration? This is something that really fascinates and excites me about dreams. It is an especially interesting idea to me because in many of the sleep temples of ancient Hellas - Mnemosyne, daughter of Heaven and Earth, mother of the Muses and personification of divine remembrance, eloquence and sense-making was considered a very important goddess. The a-ha moment of divine remembering or even making inspired sense of something is the mother of all inspiration and it is a very real experience in lucid dreaming. In a lucid dream one wakes up to a dreamworld and remembers who and where they are. I go to sleep and dream for solutions to problems and insight all the time. A couple of weeks ago when I was writing my article on Temple Sleep in the Asklepions I went to sleep on it. I had a dream that I was in an Asklepion and the temple snakes had been trained to diagnose patients. With their incredibly sensitive olfactory capabilities, this would enable them to sniff out disease and wounds. In the dream, the patients were operated on in the off-limit Avaton, which was also the domain of the serpents and inner sanctum of the god. The surgeons even fed some of the amputated body parts, flesh and organs to the snakes. In my dream I recognized this was a play on the theoxenia - the sacred meal, an early form of communion that was a healing ritual in the ancient world. I looked into this idea when I woke up and discovered that even worms can be trained to sniff out wounds and diseases - and snakes are incredibly intelligent creatures and their behaviour was very well observed and recorded in ancient times. Reading this fascinating book by @drjandial and starting to experiment with using my sleep as a songwriting tool. I’ve written songs in my sleep before by accident and I regularly use naps to achieve a hypnogogic state when I’m stuck. Encouraged to learn that this is something you can practice! The potential is exciting…anyone else doing this? Any songwriting lucid dreamers out there? So far I’ve managed to deliberately remember my dreams but I haven’t yet been able to direct them.
