What a treat it is to be able to share my love of movies with both our boys. Last night, we caught a showing of #GablesCinema After Hours of the 1996 classic movie Twister after Abe expressed interest in watching the upcoming sequel @twistersmovie this summer. So I said, "You need to watch the original first," and coincidentally, our favorite local theater shared it was going to be screening the classic on the big screen. Verdict - He loved the movie and, most importantly, the experience of watching it in a packed theater of which at least 70% in attendance had never seen it. Doing this Father series, made me reflect on my own father. I thought about what he was taught, the generation he belongs to, and how that impacted his approach to fatherhood. I reflected on how strong meaning making is. How my father and many other men believe they are doing the right thing when they are not emotionally open. One thing that I want my kids to gain, and that homeschooling encourages, is the love of learning. • When I was young I used to love math until I moved to the US and I was put in a lower math class because I wasn’t showing all of my work even though I was getting the answers right. I ended up hating math. Now I know that perhaps the teachers wanted me to follow their exact methods. The traditional school system (not the individual teachers) would disagree that what my daughter is doing is actually educational. When I asked her if she was doing extra homework Carly told me that this wasn’t homework or school work even though she had spent some time researching how to write a play. That looks like schoolwork to me but I’m just going to let it go and let you enjoy it. • Trust me! There are times when I struggle thinking if I am doing my kids a disservice because of our decision to homeschool them. But there are times when I look at them and I realize that they will be fine.
