On our way out into the ocean to make some water. A beautiful day with little wind so the sails stayed down. Copacabana beach was rather empty and we enjoyed our time there until….. a curious motorboat managed to create a massive wave right next to us even though there were no other boats. It went right through our patio something that has never happened in all our ocean crossings. Waves were so high we had 20 cm of water in the patio! Would you believe it! The hatches were open on deck over the beds and got splashed but luckily no seawater went in. Everything in the kitchen was flying around. Mate! I hope this was done because you are ignorant! Big zero on seamanship mate! You must have bought your captain’s license! We managed to make a few 100 liters of water but new filters were blocking soon as even on the ocean side at incoming tide the water is not very clean. Anyhow we are back at the yacht club now licking our wounds over a nice bottle of Malbec. Tomorrow, more chores await! Here on Cat Island we’ve seen a lot of eagle rays. They’re one of our favorite creatures to see when we go diving so we were delighted to see them here in the anchorage. . Cat Island is perhaps the most serene island in The Bahamas with many pristine beaches, nature preserves and historical ruins (my favorite, The Hermitage). At any one time we’ve only seen a handful of boats (mostly sailboats) here along with us. . Did you know Cat Island is the birthplace of The Bahamas’ indigenous Rake ‘n’ Scrape music and much of the country’s folklore?

~ Jen The Hermitage is a beautiful and peaceful place. If you visit Cat Island you must venture up Mount Alvernia to experience it in person. A note about image 9 - loose translation of this lovely tile is giving praise to God for the moon and stars. During our time here we have experienced the incredible views of the moon and stars indeed. The Milky Way has been spectacularly visible every clear night with the moon’s waning crescent phase. The birdsong at the Hermitage was magnificent. I haven’t heard so many birds since I was in Singapore’s Supertree Grove (gardensbythebay.com.sg) in 2019. . The following excerpt from bahamasgeotourism.com provides some history on the monastery and Father Jerome: “This small, stone, medieval-style monastery sits on the peak of Como Hill on Cat Island, the highest point in The Islands of The Bahamas at 206 foot above sea level. It was built in 1939 by a Roman Catholic priest, Monsignor John Hawes, known to locals as Father Jerome. An admirer of St. Francis of Assisi, Father Jerome called the getaway Mount Alvernia, after La Verna, a mountain in Tuscany that was given to Assisi as a place where he could peacefully contemplate, and it was where Assisi received the Wounds of the Cross. . A skilled architect and sculptor and self-described contemplative, Father Jerome built this retreat so that he could get away from the world. Visitors will sense his religious devotion and see his beautiful and detailed work, including hand-carved stone reliefs of the Stations of the Cross. . The islanders considered him to be a saintly figure, who would stroll around barefoot, and he was a humanitarian to all those who climbed up the steps of his monastery to ask for money. The evening settles on Rio and we look up at the open arms of Christ the Redeemer, a statue erected for the princess Isabella in the 19th century to thank her for her ongoing work on the abolition of slavery. I think we will visit there soon but for now we have been busy with all the formalities here in Brazil. We have been touched by the helpfulness and friendliness of the Brazilian authorities even though the language is a problem for us. We established small conversations with the people in a mixture of Spanish and a few words of Portuguese! We still don’t have data once we are off the boat so our translate apps don’t work! No cruising permits here: one has to check in and out of each port which is a bit time consuming as it entails visiting 3 different places: policia federal, receita federal and capitania. But it is all part of the adventure and requires a zen attitude. As a note to all those talking to us about the need for formal clothing to do the formalities, most of the people working in these offices just wear t-shirts, only the navy who is part of the capitania wears a uniform. Cruising in taxis through Rio, it is a jumble of old and new with many buildings full of graffiti. However, the streets are incredibly clean with many people working at their upkeep. We love the restaurant in the Iate Club de Rio de Janeiro and our waiter now smiles a lot and serves us right away! Today Brent tasted their pasties and I had some little fried snacks with cod in it. Delicious! There has been an outbreak of dengue here and we are very careful when going out at night as there are currently 170000 people who have been infected and vaccines have run out. Insect repellents are required to keep one safe and we close the boat at dusk with the aircon running. We are still working out a lot of things like getting SIM cards and going shopping. Getting to a marina after being at anchor with limited resources for months = get out the never ending to do list and get to chipping away at it! There’s big things and there’s small things, but we’re happy to be in Turks and Caicos at an island that has more supplies and specialists to be able to fix the necessities. And just like that my body clock adjusted to Rio time! I woke up at dawn after a long sleep helped by some amazing Chilean Sauvignon Blanc consumed at the club. It is an awesome place even though the waiter service is different… after waiting 30 minutes or so for service I helped myself to water only to see everyone else follow my lead 🤣🤣🤣. Then Brent got up and took what he thought was water out of a tall flask only to discover it was coffee. By now the waiter couldn’t keep a straight face and he took pity on us and served us some wine and water. A great night out! Today is Labour Day and everything is closed so we will have to complete our formalities tomorrow.
