On our way out into the ocean to make some water. A beautiful day with little wind so the sails stayed down. Copacabana beach was rather empty and we enjoyed our time there until….. a curious motorboat managed to create a massive wave right next to us even though there were no other boats. It went right through our patio something that has never happened in all our ocean crossings. Waves were so high we had 20 cm of water in the patio! Would you believe it! The hatches were open on deck over the beds and got splashed but luckily no seawater went in. Everything in the kitchen was flying around. Mate! I hope this was done because you are ignorant! Big zero on seamanship mate! You must have bought your captain’s license! We managed to make a few 100 liters of water but new filters were blocking soon as even on the ocean side at incoming tide the water is not very clean. Anyhow we are back at the yacht club now licking our wounds over a nice bottle of Malbec. Tomorrow, more chores await! A friend of mine @cooeyanna has a theory that he never celebrates or voices out loud his joy when things with his boat are going right, for fear it would subsequently fail. Initially I thought this was superstitious rubbish. But from now on I will never say “the engine impellers never seem to fail” nor any other such statement - cause not long after that all three engines on Rio - generator and two yanmars - chewed up their impellers and sent tiny rubber blades spiralling deep into the cooling system .. which has taken many sweaty days upside down in hot engine bays to recover ! . . . #sweatybetty #sailingrio #fiji

Well here we go. The main island of Viti Levu in Fiji is preparing for a direct hit from an expected cyclone sometime Tuesday night. This is the map from that forecast. Rio is on a Mooring in Denarau - the little green dot on that map - and directly in its current path. Mari and I actually flew into Australia this week to see friends and family - and in order to renew our Fiji Visa. I’ve now booked an earlier flight from Sydney to Fiji - to go and take care of our home. I’m taking off right now. All captains who decided to stay through cyclone season have a plan for this eventuality. But there’s currently a tropical cyclone in almost all of the worlds ocean basins and the one right near us - in Vanuatu - cyclone Lola - become the earliest category five cyclone in the history of this region ... let’s hope it’s just a windy old month eh... . Nothing sharpens the hunt than the need to put lunch on the table. One of the ways we can make this life work is by eating at least 50% fish. Should post more of this probably. For every two weeks of faultless sailing and cruising there’s about one full day of maintenance or problem solving. This is the starboard alternator. The bearings started to go a few days ago - making a low grinding sound. Thankfully I have a spare - not an easy swap out as it’s aftermarket and has extra brackets and spacers. But she’s up and running again after an afternoon of sweating it out in the engine bay. A swap out means I have time to work out how to replace the bearings on the old one !
