. a fifth masc that I saw at the IMMA in Dublin. this one seems happy and full of mischief. Unseeing Traces is a community project developed by IMMA in collaboration with New Communities Partnership (NCP), Ireland’s largest independent migrant-led national network. Inspired by a unique collection of hundreds of traditional artifacts from the Kingdom of Kongo. The former Kingdom of Kongo (1300s - 1900s) was a large dominion covering present day Democratic Republic of Congo, Angola, and the Congo Republic. The artifacts and artworks share a relational quality. Mardi Gras Indians (also known as Black Masking Indians) are African American carnival revelers in New Orleans, Louisiana, who dress up for Mardi Gras in suits influenced by Native American ceremonial apparel. Mardi Gras Indians have been practicing their traditions in New Orleans at least since the mid-19th century, possibly before. The history of the Mardi Gras Indians is shrouded in mystery and folklore. After the Civil War, hundreds of freed slaves joined the U.S. Ninth Cavalry Regiment, also known as Buffalo Soldiers. The Buffalo Soldiers fought, killed, forced, and aided the mass removal and relocation of the Plains Indians on the Western Frontier. After returning to New Orleans, many ex-soldiers joined popular Wild West shows, most notably Buffalo Bill's Wild West. The show wintered in New Orleans from 1884 to 1885 and was hailed by the Daily Picayune as "the people's choice". There was at least one black cowboy in the show, and there were numerous black cowhands. On Mardi Gras in 1885, 50 to 60 Plains Indians marched in native dress on the streets of New Orleans. Later that year, it is believed the first Mardi Gras Indian gang was formed; the tribe was named "The Creole Wild West" and was most likely composed of members of Buffalo Bill's Wild West show. However, the "Indian gangs" might predate their appearance in the City. A source from 1849 refers to black performers on Congo Square fully covered in "the plumes of the peacock.” The origins of the Mardi Gras Indians have also been traced to the mock-war performances by warriors from the Kingdom of Kongo. #OnThisDay December 18, 1622 Portuguese forces score a military victory over the Kingdom of Kongo at the Battle of Mbumbi in present-day Angola. During the early 17th century, the Kingdom of Kongo was grappling with internal strife and external pressures, including encroachment by Portuguese forces. The relationship between the Kingdom of Kongo and Portugal was complex, involving a blend of diplomatic exchanges, economic ties, and occasional conflicts. In 1622, tensions escalated between Portuguese forces and the Kingdom of Kongo. The catalyst for the conflict was a combination of territorial disputes, disputes over trade, and broader power struggles within the Kingdom of Kongo. The Portuguese sought to maintain and expand their influence in the region, while the Kingdom of Kongo aimed to resist external interference and maintain its autonomy. The Battle of Mbumbi took place near the town of Mbumbi in the Kingdom of Kongo. The exact details of the battle, including the military strategies employed by both sides, are not extensively documented. However, it is recognized as a significant confrontation between Portuguese forces and the Kingdom of Kongo. The battle likely involved clashes between Kongo forces, led by Paulo Afonso, the Duke of Mbamba and Portuguese and allied forces. The Portuguese had a vested interest in maintaining control over trade routes and resources in the region, contributing to the confrontations with local powers. The Battle of Mbumbi had repercussions for both sides. While the specifics of the aftermath are not well-documented, it is generally acknowledged that the Portuguese maintained a considerable degree of influence in the region. The Kingdom of Kongo, already facing internal strife and external pressures, experienced a decline in its political and military standing. They lost much of their light infantry and around 90 of their 200 heavy infantry in the battle. Read the rest of the post down below 👇

@nkosiya.nzambi #mwenekongo #kongodiantotila #kingdomofkongo #historia #ancestralidade #espiritualidadeafricana #CentroBwaKayiman #OrixasePretagogias #KilûmbuÒkòtó

All my brothers and sisters from Burkina Faso, you must protect this young man. You’ve seen how long it takes for this type of leader to come by. Ever since Sankara died, it's been a while, and now here comes Ibrahim. These archetypes are often hot blooded and ready to do what must be done to save a nation regardless of the backlash from the West and those that profit from a corrupt regime. It's up to you guys to make sure he fulfills his mission. He can't do it alone because no great man can take on a great task alone. In a circle, everyone has a role to play. Don't let the West and its puppets take this great man(warrior) from you.✊🏾✊🏾🇧🇫 #africanunity #kongo #congodiaspora #blackconsciousness #kingdomofkongo #explorepage #blackhistory #wakeupblackpeople #kongorenaissance #malcolmx #congo #zamba #bantu #africa

It bothers me whenever I go home and see our sisters and mothers take the role of simply a house wife. Nothing more nothing less. This patriarch has really done lots of damage on our people. For our weak minded men it’s form of control and perversion. Our mothers were powerful people and highly respected on all aspects. They were involved in all levels of society including governance. There was a reason why woman had to go through ki-kumba which sounds like Kamba. Kumba also means to drive. Meaning to guide because our mothers were raised to be lead. The title mother wasn’t given to one simply because they gave birth. You can give birth and still not be considered a mother in the kingdom of Kongo. We must chatter the European in us and make space for our true identity. Not everything is for social media. #africanunity #kongo #congodiaspora #blackconsciousness #kingdomofkongo #explorepage #blackhistory #wakeupblackpeople #kongorenaissance #malcolmx #congo #zamba #bantu #africa

Back when the village chiefs had power where they could bend the quantum field through alchemy. But pure ancestral powers don't mix with greed and lust for power/money. Sadly it's what we see today. The lesson here is that it takes one person to stand up and the fire/light starts to grow and spread like wild fire. These folks refused to be enslaved at all levels. They fought for our unity(Kongo dia total) yet today our relationships are full of betrayal and personal interests.

Shipboard Revolt Masamba was a tall man, handsome as an etching with kola nuts fastened around his ankles. His grasp of Portuguese was flawless and he understood Spanish speakers better than they understood him. He claimed that he was a Kongo prince, unlawfully taken by slavers who had paid for their presumption dearly, but he seemed in no great hurry to return to his homeland. I’ve read quite a few interesting papers and chapters on Portuguese relations with the Kingdom of Kongo, though my knowledge is still sorely lacking so I welcome both criticism and recommendations. #thefoundingoflibertalia #historicalfantasy #historicalfantasyart #fantasyart #digitalart #digitalillustration #krita #kritaart #art #historicalfiction #historicalfictionart #characterdesign #characterart #originalart #originalcharacter #originalcharacterart #goldenageofpiracy #libertalia #slavery #transatlanticslavetrade #slavetrade #portugeuseslavetrade #kongo #kingdomofkongo #shipboardrevolt #kolanuts #ship #rigging #kubacloth #slaverevolt
