Daddy’s Home - St. Vincent (2021) So before listening to this I was set on reviewing the St. Vincent album which just dropped and I realized after hearing it that I shouldn’t Have done that because it is not only extremely difficult to get into for someone who’s never actually heard St. Vincent’s music but I also just did not enjoy it at all and I don’t wanna sit here disliking an album for reasons i can’t back up, I just didn’t think it sounded good despite there being great ideas cluttered in it. Daddy’s Home is such a better place to begin, this album really spoke to me and I could fully understand the artistry unlike with the new one. Yeah this album is spectacular, everything about it sounds fresh while also maintaining a great homage of the material it’s based of, the psychedelic 60’s influence works perfectly. Down And Out Downtown has the extremely triply instrumental and the soulful vocals from Annie Clark and the background singers kill it. Live In The Dream very much sounds like a Pink Floyd homage but I really like it and everything works, the lyrics are so simple but effective and it’s a great example of making good choices for the interest of the listener. The Laughing Man uses space really well and I love the build up to the chorus with the additional vocalists, it’s super whimsical and puts you at ease despite its dark lyrics. The reverbed vocals and magical production on Somebody Like Me is so great and when she chooses to sing in that higher register if sounds amazing, I just love the influences she pulled from for this record it feels super authentic and it’s not reinventing the wheel or anything but it’s not trying to, it’s just good music very simply and I respect this project so much. Candy Darling as a closer is like the rest of the album: soulful and psychedelic. I really loved this and this was definitely a good place to start with the St. Vincent catalog, I don’t think I’ll review that new one for a while but this album truly is fantastic. Genre: Psychedelic Soul, Art Rock 8/10 🏠

We love @triple_j 😋 We wanted to highlights some amazing renditions, seeing that Smino’s cover of “Roses” just dropped! Some songs are almost impossible to cover, as they are so iconic. “Venus As A Boy” features Björk’s singular vocals that are incredibly difficult to replicate, and “When Doves Cry” by Prince left an indelible impression on anybody that heard it in the 80’s. For Joey and Kali to even attempt those covers, much less do such a good job, takes a lot of bravery and self belief. 🔍 Shoutout the Australian Broadcasting/Radio organization @triple_j for giving these artists the platforms and opportunity to give us these amazing renditions!
