I think i do own the only existing 1st London Mono deep groove of Coltrane’s OLEO that has a gatefolded sleeve 👌🏼🙌 (see pic. 3) Does it sound perfect? Hell no! Although there is not so much surface noise (once Coltrane kicks in he out-blows the surface noise 👌🏼)and it skips only 3 times , there is sometimes a strange vibration in the sound 🙀🧐 (could also be these gigantic trucks driving true my street, delivering to @albertheijn 🤬) I have a perfect second stereo i think, will do, but its very nice to hear this in mono, i don’t mind surface noise now and then. Would i pay more than 8 $ ? No.. I went in to @euclidrecords on Sunday to pick up a copy of the Herbie Hancock “Speak Like A Child” reissue and discovered a treasure trove of 16 Japanese Blue Note reissues from the ‘80’s-‘90’s in extremely nice overall condition (plus a few other choice things) waiting for me to take home. The Japanese reissues are mostly Toshiba-EMI pressings but there’s a few Kings in there. There are also several dates that I had never seen in the wild before in any version… All things considered, it was the second best single-day haul of Blue Notes I’ve ever had. 😎 I will be posting each individual title over the next month or so as I listen to them. Is this album better then Blue Trane? Yessiree Bob! Is that of any importance? . a dream BN studio line up, what a day at Rudy van Gelder’s little cathedral in Englewood Cliffs in January 1966. Could highlight every one of these players, but for now i was mesmerized by Joe Chambers on drums and foremost his right hand on the cymbal… a very clean and dry sound that’s so different then Blakey, Jones or Taylor, and that also makes this record sound contemporary.. Tony Williams also had this dry cymbal in the mid sixties The whole album is almost perfect.. one of those where side 1 and 2 are of equal quality a nice late sixties Liberty press will do just fine because it sounds great, … and strangely enough a stereo that doesn’t want me to have a mono…. My fellow IG buddy and jazz enthusiast @bojanchakra highly recommended the early Japanese press of Mal Waldron Quintet’s MAL - 1 as a way around the ridiculously prohibitive prices an original US commands. And of course he was right, it sounds mag.nif.i.cent. Thanks for the tip! The purchase, however, necessitated me to buy from a seller in Japan. I found a great deal on it and figured since I’m paying the shipping anyway, what else might this cat be slinging? Well, well, well…I was NOT aware that Sony Japan owns the masters to the Three Blind Mice catalog and that Bernie Grundman is re-cutting and mastering lacquers for a series of 2024, beautifully packaged 180g reissues. These here are two TBM records I’ve had on my bucket list forever, the OGs also way too cost prohibitive (for my tax bracket anyway, ha). These reissues sound SPECTACULAR and I could not recommend them highly enough at MSRP. Didn’t see any at the time being sold outside of Japan but perhaps that will change soon and this music will receive the exposure it so rightly deserves. I’ve heard Three Blind Mice called the Blue Note of Japan. A while ago, whilst mindlessly scrolling on instagram, i came across a post by philadelphia bassist @nicholas_krolak , advertising his new album for sale. I completely fell in love with the song playing in the video, “3” (the one i featured in this post). I found it to be an inspiring and uplifting tune, and i had to get his album. Scrolling through his instagram and other social media, I found him to be an endearing figure, ceaselessly dedicated to his craft, and deeply betrothed to music, and it only further vindicated my decision to purchase his wonderful record.
