I can’t believe it but Onaabani-Giizis is here. March in Ojibwe means Crust on the Snow Moon. Our calendar is based on the Cycles of the Moon, dividing the year into 13 months, not 12. Every 28 days a new moon appears, signifying the end of a cycle. Each moon/month has a name that matches the changes of weather and seasons or the activi- ties done in each month. March’s moon is called ~The Sugar Moon ~ and someday I hope to learn how to harvest maple syrup and be more a part of so many of the traditions❤️ How did the 13 moons and months come to be? Y’all know I’ve been annoying everyone talking about passing a new law in Colorado to eliminate Native American mascots in our schools (SB21-116). Well, it happened today. It passed and is now the law!🙏🏽 Colorado is the 5th state to ban American Indian mascots in schools. It’s a super happy but also kind of a sad day because in the year 2021, there are still 45 U.S. states that think it’s OK to consider us as relics of the past or refer to us the R-word and call us savages and yet, defend these derogatory mascots by saying it’s “honoring” us. (sorry, it’s not an honor). I am happy we have moved one step closer in the right direction today in the state of CO. This was a longggg time coming, much before my existence. Seeds have been planted by my elders and generations before me for this day to come. I was humbled to be part of this bill and to work so closely with some powerhouse Native leaders in our community. My dad once told me, “Danielle, if you don’t speak up, no one will do it for you.” I carry that with me every single day.
