2018 Grantee Isaac Julien’s VIA-supported project, “Lessons of the Hour” is now on view in NYC at the Museum of Modern Art. Commissioned by Memorial Art Gallery (MAG) at the University of Rochester, NY, renowned British artist Isaac Julien premiered a new media work focusing on the entwined histories of the City of Rochester, the development of photography, and civil rights activism. Titled “Lessons of the Hour,” the 35mm black-and-white and color multi-screen installation focuses on abolitionist Frederick Douglass and other preeminent activists for social justice of his time, such as Susan B. Anthony and Ida B. Wells, who fought for women’s right to vote and anti-lynching, respectively. Douglass’ life in Rochester coincided with the rise of photography as a widespread mass medium. In 1888, George Eastman established the Eastman Kodak Company, turning Rochester into a city where political activism came into direct contact with the power of photography. Focusing on the intersections between the history of photography in the City of Rochester and Douglass’ deep understanding of how the medium could help transform people’s perceptions of African Americans, “Lessons of the Hour” reconstructs and re-imagines these stories from a contemporary perspective, connecting them to our current political and social moment. The installation will be on view at the MoMA NYC through September 28th. i was completely and utterly blown away by isaac julien’s installation for the whitney biennial… profound, powerful and beautiful, ‘Once again… (statues never die)’ reflects on the life of Alain Locke, a key figure in the Harlem Renaissance, and the way Black and African art is and has been Othered by museums and cultural institutions. playing out across five screens, we see Locke contemplate the Pitt Rivers museum in Oxford (where he was a Rhodes scholar), which notoriously organised its collection according to a racial hierarchy. we also see Locke debate Albert Barnes, discussing the parameters of black modernism and queer desire in art. we’re presented with simultaneous variations of the same scene, shot in black and white 4K and 35mm film, and this multiplicity makes us active participants, engaging with and contemplating the layered meaning of the scenes presented to us. each screen holds a message, and the five screens combined do so too. some of the most powerful images were soundtracked to music, creating a ‘diasporic dream space’ that was visually and sonically affecting and immersive. i can’t remember the last time i saw something so beautiful. incredible, thank you @isaacjulien 🤍 @whitneymuseum @pittriversmuseum #art #film #whitneybiennial #isaacjulien #alainlocke

Once Again... (Statues Never Die), 2022 Sir Isaac Julien Imagine a culture of infinite possibilities. ‘Unfolding across five screens, Once Again... (Statues Never Die) reflects on the life and thought of Alain Locke (1885-1954), philosopher, educator, and cultural critic of the Harlem Renaissance (played by André Holland) who urged members of the African diaspora to embrace African art in order to reclaim their cultural heritage. The installation includes sculptures by Richmond Barthé (1901-1989) and Matthew Angelo Harrison (b. 1985), opening up a conversation about Black artists’ legacies that extends across modern history. Julien has described the work as a form of “poetic restitution,” speaking to the ways museums have collected African art. The artist refines this critique by creating a visual and sonic meditation as a “diasporic dream-space.” In the work, Locke contemplates the Pitt Rivers Museum at the University of Oxford-where he was the first Black Rhodes Scholar-and the Barnes Collection in Philadelphia, founded by one of Locke’s interlocutors, Albert C. Barnes (1872-1951), played by Danny Huston. Barnes also debates a skeptical Locke on his heritage, a sequence that distills many of the questions that the installation raises: Who gets to define Black modernism? Who has the authority to speak? How do men negotiate power, or queer desire?’ Whitney Museum of American Art ‘One of the last lines in the film, spoken by Locke, is credited to bell hooks: “… a culture of infinite possibility is ready to receive us. Espace Louis Vuitton Osaka presents the monumental installation "Ten Thousand Waves" by Isaac Julien @isaacjulien, a British artist originally from the Caribbean Island of Saint Lucia, running from March til September this year. Julien is one of the leaders of a movement of English filmmakers in the mid-1980s that used video as an activist medium. Continuing in this practice, this piece takes on issues of displacement and immigration in the context of the Chinese diaspora experience, while the tragic fate of the film’s protagonists also evokes the memory of African slaves crossing the Atlantic. アイザック・ジュリアンの個展 3月末 用事で心斎橋に行った時にヴィトンのギャラリー（無料）を覗きました。 知らない作家さんでしたが鑑賞してきました。 ９つのスクリーンで１つの物語（テーマ）が表現されてます。 家電量販店のテレビコーナーのように 全てのスクリーンが同じ映像ではなく 撮影位置や時間がずれていたり ワイドな空間を何分割かに分けて写したり 意図的に無のスクリーンを作ってその近辺を暗くしたり、、 細部まで計算した編集をされていると感じました。 ベンチがあったので 最初は座って見ていましたが、 定点観測ではなく 歩き回って、空間を感じるように 作家さんは作ってるな、 と思ったので 映像や音に合わせ 身体が心地よいと感じるエリアに 移動しながら鑑賞してましたが 作品と自分の身体が呼応するようで 新鮮な感覚でした。 平日で、個展初日のためか ほぼ貸切状態だったため 大いに満喫できました。 空いてる時をオススメしたいです 🧠一つのスクリーンでは🧠 画面の中の出来事として見る。傍観者。 中心視野的な見方ーーつまり ・意識的 ・細部まで見る ・頭の中に言葉が浮かびやすい 🧠９つのスクリーンで思ったこと🧠 ・それぞれの映像は２Dであり、音源も散らばっているので、歩き回ることで見え方聞こえ方が変わる。空間を感じ、自分の肉体感覚を感じる。鑑賞も一期一会。 ・周辺視野的な見方になるーーすなわち 無意識的、全体をぼんやりと感じる、直感的 ・視野外にもスクリーンがあるーー そこに流れている映像/時間は自分が見ても見ていなくても過ぎていく。その感覚が、現実世界に通じる。一つのスクリーンでは表現できない、新しい方法。 楽しい体験でした✨ サンキュー Sir.アイザック & エスパス ルイ･ヴィトン大阪😍 #isaacjulien

Wrapping up 72 Hours in NYC with my one and only genuine highlight: Right after landing I headed to the Whitney to see the Isaac Julien 5 Panel video installation ‘Once Again…(Statues Never Die)’ I summarise my experience with 1 word: goosebumps. Then, seeing Isaac Julien and enjoying his contagious smile again at a private function, an artist I admire deeply. The work explores the relationship between Dr. Albert C. Barnes, who was an early US collector and exhibitor of African material culture, and the famed philosopher and cultural critic Alain Locke, known as the ‘Father of the Harlem Renaissance’, offering us a poignant moment of beauty.
