Yeats) Mother’s Day: I’ve been envious today of the friends feeling obliged to take cards and flowers and stay for lunch. I wasn’t aware of Mum being an older mum at the school gates: my granny and great granny carried on having children into their fifties. But also my Mum was just cool, in a very unconscious way. She loved reggae, adored Springsteen and Snow Patrol and got me listening to David Gray. She had a lot of time for Snoop and Kanye; also R Kelly, but we’ll gloss over him now. She came to gigs where we were often the last women standing. After two Guinnesses, she might well sing The Salley Gardens horribly off key but at least once it was Sex on Fire. I hope I have some of my Dad’s gentleness and compassion; from Mum I’ve a hefty dose of feistiness and determination, stubbornness and sarcasm. She was fiercely loyal; I feel blessed to have inherited that. She wasn’t judgemental but her honesty was unfiltered: a stranger asking for a kindly opinion in a changing room would quite likely be told she looked like a hooker and should reconsider. Her made up swear words were better than the originals: duckhead and motherfluffer have stayed with me; she confronted our burglar with “You half bolloxed winker.” Mum had been a sickly child with a heart defect that progressed with time, but she was a fearless, tireless mother and friend, until suddenly she wasn’t. The last few years of her life, marked by strokes and heart failure, must have been a struggle; but she smiled, joked, mocked, did her hair and lippy everyday. I’ve said before that Mum and Dad lived relatively quiet lives but with a large amount of courage and colour. She always told me I was born of a great love; I find that validating through everything. I was looking at the precious little things I have of Mum’s, but in truth she’s given me so much that carries me through each day. A beautiful friend of mine shared how she was feeling 3 weeks after having her baby. She sent me a really vulnerable message that I know was not easy to send. Telling me how she felt so tired, overwhelmed, and lost. I felt every word, and it sent me straight back to the early days with all my babies. This was my reply.💕 We need to validate each others feelings on our new postnatal path. It will be different for us all. The struggles we feel, the emotions that creep up, all need to be validated and understood. Scared to tell someone how you are really feeling for fear, someone will think you're ungrateful. ✨Brana, Evie & Riyah✨ I started following @shouting_eviesworth when Evie Ren was in NICU for her first Christmas, after our premature baby spent her first 4 weeks in NICU/SCBU that autumn and it was all still very raw. I was in awe of what strong and perfectly chosen parents Evie had in Brana & Ross, who advocated & cared so fantastically for her. To create a drawing based on a beautiful photo taken weeks before Evie died and her little sister Riyah was born was an absolute honour, even though I was also so worried I wouldn’t do this amazing family & photo justice when Brana asked. Today I got four custom pieces photographed, packed up and sent to their new homes. Four! That is about six months of work right there in terms of my custom drawings. They are all absolute labours of love, I get far too emotionally invested, add that to Imposter Syndrome 🤪 So now I am equal parts delighted that they are done, so excited to share them here after they have been received, and absolutely terrified that something will be wrong with any or all of them 🙈 In the meantime here is a less stressful recent drawing I like, an edit of my “Together” drawing. This was originally based on how both of our boys liked to be cuddled by me or their dad while swaying when they were sick ❤️ Mama originally had long hair but a personalisation request was made to give her short curly hair and for her little one to have curls too. Both my dearest mother and Donnie echo eachother. I am working very hard on being happy. I got out of a toxic work environment, I'm in therapy and I'm prioritizing rest and ME time. It's been a learning curve. My mother told her care team in the ICU if she didn't see me again that all she wanted was for me to be happy before she passed . That was her last wish for me. She loved me from the first moment she knew she was pregnant and was (is) the most wonderful mother you could ever have. Everyday I wake I miss her and every night when I close my eyes she is the last thing I think about. But her words her wish always repeat in my head. As I go forth in my next chapter the only thing I'm looking for is to be happy. I am moving out of a state that I have never truly belonged to into another where I can just BE instead of survive. After all I have been through I deserve nothing less. Thank you so much for the gentle reminder @donniewahlberg. DIY Vegan natural yogurt for kids swipe to see more photos Yam Yogurt with Strawberry, is a plant-based and vegan alternative to traditional yogurt. 1 + 1/2 cup ( 300 g ) cooked yam 1 + 1/2 cup ( 230 g ) fresh strawberries 2 tablespoons of lemon juice 1 tablespoon coconut oil 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract Add the cooked yam and strawberries to a food processor and blend until smooth. Then add the lemon juice, coconut oil and vanilla extract and beat again until all the ingredients are well mixed. Adjust flavors and texture if necessary. Often people can feel confused about their postnatal checks and how they make them. We hope you find this post helpful: Your baby should get a full newborn clinical examination within 72 hours of birth. This is carried out by a doctor or specialist midwife to spot any problems as early as possible so treatment can start. You should also get a full clinical examination postnatally to ensure you are recovering well and to answer any questions you may have. If your baby was born in a hospital, these examinations will usually happen before you go home. If you had a home birth, you and your baby will be examined firstly by your midwife and then by your GP or at a maternity hospital. You will usually get a visit at home from your Public Health Nurse (free) within 3 days of returning home, or 3 days after birth if you had a homebirth. They will call you to arrange a time that works. If you had a homebirth, your midwife will care for you and baby during the first week and refer you to a specialist if any issues arise. Then your baby is due a check up at 2 weeks. You make this appointment directly with your GP (free) or private Paediatrician. They will also have another check at 6 weeks - again you make this appointment. You will be due a Postnatal check at 6 weeks. You make this appointment directly with your GP (free) or private Gynaecologist. Your baby will have a series of developmental checks with your PHN over the first few years of life (free). You will get a call from your PHN when these are due. You also need to call and arrange your babies childhood vaccinations with your GP (free) If you decide to vaccinate your baby. Breastfeeding and drinking alcohol 🍸🥂 What to do??? Information available can be conflicting and confusing. It's Christmas, and if you're a breastfeeding mum, you may have family gatherings or nights out planned and wondering what to do 🥂🤶🎅. Moderate alcohol consumption (up to 1 standard drink per day) is not known to be harmful to your baby, especially if you wait at least 2 hours after a single drink before feeding. The main points I've picked up about alcohol and breastfeeding are 🤱As alcohol leaves your bloodstream, it will leave your breast milk. (Don't overdo it) 🤱 Have a glass of wine with food.🍷 🤱 If you feel better, you could pump and dump, but you DON'T have to. Pumping more to relieve engorgment or encourage supply 😉if you're away from baby for a longer period of time. 🤱 Planning ahead if you can. It's easier when your baby is sleeping longer periods of time, like 7 pm till 6am it gives you a chance to enjoy and metabolise the alcohol before the morning feed. 🤱 Breastfeeding and alcohol can be both enjoyed this Christmas 🥂🎄 Having young kids, I find myself being happy with a nice meal and a glass of wine or 2, that's it. It's never worth it the next day 😉😂 That's also helped me to enjoy those little treats the odd time and continue to feed my baby with no ill effects 😘. How did you plan your nights out? NICE Guidelines ( The national institute of Clinical Excellence ) does not recommend use of blood tests to diagnose menopause in women over 40 ➡️measuring Estrogen or FSH is generally not indicated because of hormone fluctuations ➡️A menopause questionnaire is helpful in mesuring severity and impact of symptoms ➡️FSH is a hormone produced by the pituitary gland in the brain and it stimulates your ovaries to produce eggs and controls your menstrual cycle ➡️Levels of FSH rise and fall during peri menopause ➡️Levels are permanently raised in post menopause as it’s trying harder to stimulate your ovaries to work ➡️If your taking HRT in perimenopause checking estrogen levels can be misleading as the fluctuating estrogen will continue- it only increases the lowest levels and helps manage your symptoms ➡️After the menopause, fluctuations of estrogen no longer occur so it’s easier to assess, but it’s still not very helpful. Air control- avoid talking while eating ( gas is swallowed air) , don’t over fill your mouth , don’t smoke while eating , avoid fluids while eating particularly alcohol. 2. Eat smaller meals, avoid processed foods and try and adapt some of the principles of the Mediterranean diet 3. Mindful eating - sit down in quiet environment, enjoy your meal - avoid watching tv or devices. Chew food- 32 times is recommended!! 4.learn your trigger foods- try and avoid gas producing foods like cauliflower, onions & beans. Starchy food can also be the culprit. 5. Try peppermint tea after eating 6.
