The Studio Backlot Tour at MGM was the highlight attraction in the early days of the park. Throughout its run until it’s eventual closing in 2014, the entire experience kept getting shortened. The initial entrance was where one now enters Star Wars Launch Bay. It included the tram tour through New York Street, Residential Street, costuming, the SFX water tank, sound stages, and of course Catastrophe Canyon. The tour was initially the main highlight of the park along with The Great Movie Ride. The tour was significantly shortened over the years and by its closure in 2014, it was an absolute shadow of its former self. All these photos show parts or former parts of the tour. The areas that used to encompass the tour now house, Walt Disney Presents, Launch Bay, Toy Story Land, Star Wars Galaxy’s Edge, and Grand Avenue. Catastrophe Canyon was located approximately where Smuggler’s Run is currently located and Residential Street is where the Black Spire marketplace is currently located. Yesterday I touched on Residential Street regarding the Osborne Lights so today it felt fitting to share the reason the Osborne lights were relocated. The show replaced Residential Street and really made the final version of the Studio Backlot Tour almost half its length. The show opened in 2005 as part of the Happiest Celebration on Earth celebration for Disneyland’s 50th anniversary. As part of that celebration, various attractions from different parks were duplicated in other parks such as this coming from Walt Disney Studios and Soarin Over California opening in EPCOT. Thankfully Catastrophe Canyon was spared during the construction of this show. The stunt show closed April 2, 2016 along with the rest of Streets of America to make to make way for Galaxy’s Edge. Today we remember the Earffel Tower, the original icon of the Disney MGM Studios. It served as the park icon from 1989 when the park opened until the eyesore sorcerer’s hat was added in 2001. The Earffel Tower was the only park icon that was not on stage but actually backstage. The tower was 130 feet tall and was best viewed from the Studio Backlot Tour. It also did not nor did it ever contain any water. It was removed 8 years ago today and Slinky Dog Dash currently stands in its place. On a personal note, the Earffel Tower was how I always found MGM when I was on World Drive. This existed? Yes, originally opening as the costume shop in 1991 when Sci-Fi Dine in opened, it became Ellen’s Buy the Book in 1996 after the shop in the ABC sitcom Ellen Staring Ellen DeGeneres. It became Writer’s Stop in 1999 and remained so until April of 2016. It now occupies the area many love called Baseline Tap House. As nice as Baseline is, I personally miss going in for a carrot cake cookie and cup of coffee and sitting on that couch with a good book. Every 90’s kid that visited the Disney MGM Studios remembers this place. Honey, I Shrunk the Kids: Movie Set Adventure opened in December of 1990 and closed in April of 2016. I’m sure many of us fondly remember sliding down a roll of Kodak film or getting misted in the face by the giant dog’s nose. #FBF to the Pocahontas scene in Fantasmic at Hollywood Studios. This scene opened with Fantasmic at MGM in October 1998 and stayed was replaced when the show reopened in 2022 with various hero’s and heroines. The show takes place in a purpose built 10,000 seat amphitheater. When Fantasmic opened at MGM in 1998, it served as the replacement to Sorcery in the Sky which has been playing in the park since 1990. During the late 1980s when Michael Eisner was still new at Disney and looking for ways to expand the company. A few years before The Living Seas had opened at EPCOT Center to compete with Sea World and now Universal was opening a new park. Michael Eisner liked the proposed Great Movie Ride for the show business pavilion for EPCOT Center’s Future World West so much that he decided to build an entirely new park around it, Disney’s MGM Studios. In the original plans, when the ride was going to be at Epcot, it was going to have the name “Great Moments at the Movies”. The Great Movie ride actually used a ride system very similar to the Universe of Energy attraction at EPCOT Center. The ride was a specular 22 minute ride through the movies including: Footlight Parade, Singin’ in the Rain, Mary Poppins, The Public Enemy, Clint Eastwood and John Wayne westerns, Alien, Indiana Jones, horror films, Tarzan, Casablanca, Fantasia, and The Wizard of Oz. Unfortunately, The Great Movie Ride closed on August 13, 2017 and in 2020 was replaced by the uncreative Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway. °•° Here are some fun facts about The Great Movie Ride: •In the Indiana Jones scene, there was a wall of hieroglyphics; on that wall were pictures of Donald and Mickey and well as C3PO and R2D2. •The Fantasia scene almost wasn’t in the ride. It was originally intended to be the tornado scene from The Wizard of Oz, hence the blowing wind however, due to a contractual agreement with MGM, Disney could only use two scenes from the movie instead of three. •If you had a B show (the gangster scene, the car’s license plate was 021-429, a reference to the St. Valentine’s Day Massacre on February 14, 1929. •A well-known fact is that the plane in the Casablanca scene was cut in half; the back part of the plane is still visible today at Magic Kingdom on The Jungle Cruise.
