ICA's Greater Victoria Immigration Partnership (GVLIP) held a vital community dialogue in Victoria, BC, addressing support challenges faced by immigrant women surviving domestic violence. A new report, "Safe Houses, Supportive Communities," unveiled barriers like language obstacles and fear of losing control when seeking help. Most immigrant survivors (73%) don't know where to turn for assistance. The dialogue united local services to tackle limited resources and housing availability, fostering collaboration to enhance support for these vulnerable individuals. The Province is developing broader anti-racism legislation that builds on the Anti-Racism Data Act (ARDA), which became law in June 2022. This legislation is being co-developed with First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Peoples, to be informed by the lived experiences of Indigenous and racialized people. The government is conducting distinctions-based Indigenous engagement with several First Nations and Métis partners. This year, they provided grants to community organizations, like ICA, who want to lead engagements with Indigenous and racialized people across B.C. This public questionnaire aims to hear from people of all backgrounds on how they think the government should address racism in B.C. The feedback is anonymous and will help us make our province work better for everyone. The questionnaire is open until September 30, 2023.
