Quilt National is a national juried exhibition intended to demonstrate the transformations taking place in the world of quilting. She applies her background in Classical Studies to a literal interpretation of the myth of the American West and incorporates themes and visuals from Greco-Roman mythology in her work. Her work explores the inheritance of stolen land, the industrial exploitation of the landscape, and the deification of the cowboy archetype. She also examines the interplay between human ambition and natural entropy: the permanent consequences our actions have on the land, and the chaotic nature of the environment that threatens our own existence. . . . As a foundation for this work, historically imagined utopias have been considered alongside constructed virtual reality worlds in pop-cultural narratives, and Ecotopian fiction. Is this summer heat getting to you? 🔥Well, cool off at the Holter and take in our new exhibits! On view in the Millikan Gallery: "Montana Remembered" by Joeann Daley. This exhibit comprises three print and collage series made by Daley between 1969 and 1988. She was a member of the Montana Modernist movement in the mid-20th century and this series documents the changing landscape of the Montana town, Anaconda, following the demise of the mining industry. Things to do this weekend: check out new exhibits at the Holter! ✅ Paolo Porelli's "Figure Out: Catastrophe or Regeneration" presents a sculptural group of 60 ceramic figurines that reveal the reality of the times in which we live, but that are cognizant of how to go beyond and enter the timeless dimension of myth and archetype. The figures convey two parallel meanings. One part represents the phenomena that, due to their excess, are leading to catastrophe: production, consumption, raw materials, profit, quantity, and combustion. Personifications of regeneration appear in the other part: natural phenomena, biological dynamics, organic matter, plant forms, fertility, and humidity. As in the cosmic balance, destructive and generating forces co-exist, just as in traditional, ancient representations of archaic divinities of all the civilizations of the world.
