Do you “fit-in” or belong? Have you ever thought of the difference? Brene Brown, a research professor and author known for her work on vulnerability, shame, and courage, distinguishes between belonging and fitting in in her book “Braving the Wilderness: The Quest for True Belonging and the Courage to Stand Alone.” According to Brown, fitting in involves changing who you are to be accepted by others and conforming to societal norms and expectations. It often involves sacrificing authenticity and hiding parts of yourself in order to be liked or approved by others. On the other hand, belonging is about being true to yourself and accepting yourself for who you are, while also being accepted and embraced by others for your authentic self. The difference between the two are important to understand or at least it has been for me. It is about finding a genuine connection with others based on mutual respect, understanding, and shared values, rather than trying to mold yourself to fit in. Within her books Brown often emphasizes the importance of cultivating a sense of true belonging, which requires courage, vulnerability, and the willingness to stand alone if necessary. I share the belief that true belonging comes from embracing your imperfections, owning your story, and showing up as your authentic self, even if it means risking rejection or criticism. @realjohncmartin often says to lean into it, “it” being the process of knowing ourselves better, with compassion. For us all I think it would benefit to encourage ourselves and other individuals to prioritize belonging over fitting in. Aim to seek genuine connections and relationships that celebrate ones perspectives and knowledge. In a sense, true belonging is essential for personal growth, fulfillment, and well-being.
