Gilmore was settled by silver miners in the 1880s. At its peak there were 600 people in the town, but by 1930s it had essentially been abandoned. It had been known for a number of fine homes and stores and a large power plant, which exploded in 1929. A quick fly over the ghost town of Gilmore, Idaho. Gilmore was once a thriving mining town with over 600 residents, but between the Great Depression, isolation, elevation and a tragic mining accident in 1929, the glam of Gilmore did not prevail. It's hard to imagine schools, hotels, brothels, general stores a post office and even mansions among these ruins, but rough Idaho winters have reclaimed many of the buildings, leaving mostly collapsed structures behind. Since 2008, Idaho has made efforts to preserve this historic area. There are also what looked like some summer homes/camping sites dispersed on private property, which are rumored to be refuge homes for dooms day preppers, but no other soul was around when I visited. The historic buildings that remain still appear to quickly be falling into ruins, unfortunately. Not featured in the video are the old mining shacks further up the hill (refer to my last post for information on the murder that took place here). There is also a cemetery and the remains of the mine on the hill behind the town. This location is definitely a worthwhile explore for anyone who enjoys leaving the beaten path. π
