May is #museummonth, and with this year’s theme of ‘Museums for Education and Research’ we are going back into our archive and spotlighting the dramatic redesign of Toronto’s Museum Station! Signalling the arrival to the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM) and Gardiner Museum, the station itself is envisioned as a cultural exhibition. Together with curators from these two museums, artifacts were selected from their collections to replicate as part of the station design, initiating the learning and sharing of knowledge before one even enters the museums. The station’s structural columns are designed to reference archeological objects and historical architecture – from Toltec Warriors to the Wuikinuxv First Nation Bear House Post, Osiris Pilasters, to the columns of Beijing’s Forbidden City; while hieroglpyhics taken from a limestone relief in the ROM’s Egyptian collection are used to create the station’s large signage lettering.
